I found a nice place, there's forests, mountains, flux, an obsidian layer, and and a volcano.

The thing is the forests are your regular forest, then it jumps right to the highest type of mountain with no in-between, the cliff is 60 z-levels tall, and only about half way up does it start to recede into the volcano. The bottom half is effectively sheer.

It's pretty cool, and the first time I've ever had this happen.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / A couple of military questions.
« on: June 05, 2010, 01:06:05 pm »
I've decided to finally try a 31.XX military, but I need to know some stuff,
1. What state is the military in since 31.05, any glaring issues?
2. Where is that topic with all the military work around info?
3. Are crossbows worth it? No
4. What if they're firing bone bolts? No

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Poll: What temperatures do you prefer?
« on: June 05, 2010, 12:19:42 am »
Not really any reason, I'm just wondering. Personally I prefer Temperate or Cold, you don't need to worry about the effects of temperature on your dorfs, and you still get ice. And it feels very much like home when I'm in a cold forest.

I'm curious, I know that you need it for irrigation, but I'm wondering what most people think about drinking water.

Here's a link

I think that this would be pretty cool, personally, I'd pick Chris Rock, what about you?

In 40d magma pipes would change in shape every level, now all the ones I've found are the same shape all the way down, which makes it difficult to tap into them without sacrificing a dwarf.

Do they ever change? And does anyone have a way to tap into them without killing a dwarf?

So I'm going to start a fort in a pretty nice place, there's a brook, volcano, and plenty of trees. My plan  is to start two industries, metal, and meat, the meat being the topic of this thread.

1. Is it possible to get mules through breeding? I know that they only appear as male because they're sterile in game and real life, but a mule is a combination of a donkey and horse, if both are present will I get mules ever?

2. I know caging an animal stops breeding, but what about ropes?

3. How should I designate slaughtering? 1 animal at a time to give my tanner time to tan the hide? Or should I get more tanners and just butcher them all at once?

4. I don't plan on making soap, is fat worth the time and resources?

5. Is milk that great a trade good? Should I bother, I dislike micromanaging.

Help would be greatly appreciated, I'm new to the meat industry. (But not DF)

I've been generating lots of worlds, 50 years of history, high volcanism, high minimum volcanoes, but the volcanoes always end up in mountains or evil areas, or places entirely devoid of trees.

Is it possible to get a map with a volcano in a forest? I don't care if there's an aquifer, hell there could be a three or four level aquifer, all I want is a forest with a volcano.

Sorry if this is a bit much to ask, but I've been trying for quite a while, and my computer is running really hot, so I figured I'd ask here.

I know that cows are usually what people use for animal industries, plus whatever stuff they have extra, but I was thinking, what about cats? Do they breed fast enough to make them more worth while than cows? And I know that they provide more skin because of their greater numbers, the only problem is their adoption of dorfs.

Alternatively is there an animal that breeds as fast (or close to) cats, that won't adopt your dorfs? Because they could be equally effective.

DF Suggestions / New type of constucted wall: Fancy wall.
« on: May 16, 2010, 12:23:40 pm »
The fact that you can't engrave constructed walls is kinda annoying, so I figure we could have a new wall type, the fancy wall, it would be just like a normal wall but while the dwarf is putting it up he engraves it (Or an engraver comes over and does it)

So I just started, my guy is a Competent Swordsman and Fighter, and an Adept Thrower, and he's got a two-handed sword in one hand, and a shield in the other. Is he going to take a penalty for holding it in one hand? Abnd will he be better if he's two handed?

57
Seriously.

Here's my arguement:

You hit someone with a sword/axe/insertsharpobject, they will be badly cut, and will start to bleed out/loose limbs. But if you hit someone with a warhammer/baseballbat/insertsomethingblunt, you're probly not going to do nearly the same damage, sure they'll get knocked back, mabey break bones, definitly get a nasty bruise, but unless the broken bone pirces a vein/artery it's not going to make them bleed out, and it's not going to be that life threatening (Realitive to a sword, etc.)

Really the only thing needing fixing is the unkillables, and the fact that you don't really die from burns or organ failure.

I apologize if I am mis-interpreting people's difficulties with the system, mabey everyone has already seen this, but I don't think so.

So I've  been going down the adventurer skill list, putting 15 points in a skill, trying it out, then quitting. All ofd them seem interesting, but thrower I've found is lots of fun, not as fun as the kill a dragon with a worm days of 40d, but it's still fun.

I was being attacked by two axemen, and I threw my bronze whip (how does that work?) at one, and it knocked him down, and my 2 handed sword at another.

It took off his head.

And those were, in order, the first two moves of the fight. Thrower FTW!

1. I am proceeding to rob them blind. If I take all their stuff and deconstruct all their buildings will they be mad? And will they stick around? I remember in 40d they wouldn't care and would act as free guards, but I want to be sure. EDIT:: Will they take my stuff?

2. Humans AND dwarves? The leader is a human, but the guy that hangs around in the town hall with him is a Legendary Hammerdwarf with quite a history, and about half the population is dwarves. I know you can get odd diplomats/leaders (Had a fun monster as the leader/diplomat of some humans) but mixed towns?  Is this normal or a bug?

3. Should these dwarves be sacrificed to Armok for associating with humans? Or should they be kept alive, because there's 30 of them, and they're all competent weapon users, and I wouldn't need a military (My population cap is 20)
