DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Speed of vertical vs horizontal movement?
« on: January 19, 2012, 08:01:07 pm »
You can also dig out a giant vertical shaft (carefully, if you like your miners), designate it as a garbage dump, and dump your ores into it to make a quantum stockpile at the bottom.

Actually...can you get a catapult to fire charcoal and ore?
Only if they are not marked as economic, so that makes more problems than it solves.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Speed of vertical vs horizontal movement?
« on: January 19, 2012, 06:53:48 pm »
I just started a new fort in a nice place (Cold, major river which I can easily modify to make an awesome moat, lots of trees to burn, plenty of grazing area) and I'm now working on getting magma for forges. I looked at the pump stack and magma piston articles but is there really any point?

Even if magma is 100z levels down couldn't I just build a stairway top to bottom? If moving up/down a z level takes the same time as regular horizontal movement then it won't be to much for my smiths to be working down there and then come up to eat/drink/sleep. Of course the bar stockpiles would have to be down there with them but I see no reason to even put food/drink stockpiles down there.

What do you guys think?

Do throwing coins have a chance of decapitation? I'm curious about this...

Have you seen the thread about the guy killing a bronze colossus with a thrown fluffy wambler? I'd say yes.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Issue with Archery Range
« on: January 18, 2012, 02:39:28 pm »
You need to go to the military screen and set their alert to active/train, I was having your same problem untill I did that. Now my archery range is littered with bolts.

Also remember to channel out the squares behind the target so you can recollect the bolts that miss.

It turns out that one of the many many items I offered them had a wooden decoration on it. I have started killing every elven caravan that comes my way in an attempt to make them raeg and go to war.

Besides that I never said that I'm against using exploity methods, the only reason I'm not making a dorfen reactor is because I've yet to make a design that I like.

Off the edge of the map, via the fortification trick like I said in the original post.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Redirecting rivers and maintaining flow.

I've been reading the articles on flow and waterwheels from the wiki because I'm trying to set up power to a pump stack. I understand that waterwheels need flow to work but the article on flow focuses on the more pressure related and exploit based ways to get flow.

What I want is much more simple, I plan on redirecting the brook on my map to go under my fortress (built around a volcano). I plan to filter out anything that gets in the river with vertical grates. It will then feed a cistern and pass through another grate and out the other side (ideally the water in the cistern would have flow). Then I would have a whole pile of waterwheels drawing power from the river. Then I want to dump it out the edge of the map using the fortification trick, I think that this would keep the river "flowing" in the waterwheel sense.

I just want to know if this is going to work. Would I have to use other methods of draining the brook off the map? For example sending it back arond to the original exit point, or meerly spliting the brook instead of totally redirecting it.

Make sure you are using prospect all

my two cents
I did, and it does appear that I have previously spoilered metals on the map, just very deep.

In other news the elves sent a caravan full of nice creatures that I wanted. I offered them a bunch of bone stuff but they gave me the "Y U NO STOP KILLING TREES" response and tried to leave. Perfect time to train my military, I'm now trying to mod my dorfs to be able to butcher the elves so my Legendary +5 bowmaker can make some masterwork elf bone bows for my future crossbow dorfs.

You can always just annoy the humans/elves and melt down the remains of their sieges. That, along with goblinite, should be more than enough metal for all your dwarfy needs.

I don't think elves use metal and you'll get more iron from the humans by trading them rock kitsch than slaughtering them.

Only problem is there are no humans, and the elves are hard to get mad in this version due to bugs, I am preping for goblin invasion but have had no indicators.

71
By the way, didn't you see in the embark options that there were no metals? or is it all sphalerite and gold and such? Is there really no ore or just no weapons and armor grade ore?
It's actually very, odd, shallow and deep metals showed up on the embark screen, but dfhack and my mining says that there is none.

The FTW device would be easy to make though, between the colcanoe and the aquifer half way up the same volcano.

72
It is a 2x2 embark, the lack of metal balances out artifact silver mauls, volcanoes, flux, and highmaster migrants.

And dfhack seems to be working, I can discount the existince of metals without dfhack but I've taken out whole layers of my mountain and have been doing exploratory work in the caverns. Lots of gems, no metal.

74
Yes, does that show up in dfhack's prospector? And if it does is it under the Ore heading, becasue if it is I have none.

75
That is a possibility, though I have not had humans show up. I've already started irritating the elves and am preparing my defenses for possible sieges.

I'll look up the golbin threshold. Though I am farther along than any other fort my migrants have been quality over quanitity. Those Highmaster smiths are the rule, not the exception. I even got 4 dorfs with the full spread of medical skills, none of them less than high master.

EDIT:: Just traded a dorf caravan for a bunch of metal bars and crafts (which will be melted down). Next thing I know my weaponsmith has a mood and takes over my magma forge. He went and grabbed most of the bars I had traded for and the few that had been melted so far. I almost flipped my shit, either I was going to get something good, or I was going to lose all my metal and gain a useless piece of crap.

lolnope.jpg

He spits out an artifact silver warhammer decorated with spikes of steel and hanging rings of steel, all sorts of steel decorations.

I not mad bro.

EDIT 2: Correction, not a War Hammer, a Maul. I even less mad bro
