DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Who strangled the dragon?
« on: March 25, 2010, 09:42:02 pm »
I just had a legendary dragon attack my fortress. Unfortunately, I was grossly unprepared for this, and since my dwarves took their sweet time in pulling the level to retract the drawbridge, he was able to get in. Much Fun ensued, and most of my dwarves are either dead or throwing a tantrum.

According to my units list, the dragon was killed. I see nothing in the announcements relating to his slaying. The listings just go from various dwarves being interrupted by the dragon, to tantrum after tantrum. Does anyone know an easy way to determine the dwarf who killed this beast (most likely with his bare hands)?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Interrupted by Guard?
« on: March 22, 2010, 02:58:45 pm »
I just got hit pretty bad by a goblin siege, so I've got several dead dwarves. I've built coffins, and have placed them in a room, and have assigned them all for burial. However, when my dwarves try to carry the bodies into the coffins, they stop. I've been assaulted with messages saying that they've been interrupted by guards.

I do have an elven caravan getting ready to leave, but I don't see them stopping anyone, so I'm at a loss. Anyone experienced this before?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Dorfs wont Smelt
« on: March 13, 2010, 11:58:50 pm »
One of my dwarves just got a fey mood (my first in a long time), and amongst other things, he's demanding metal bars. I have a decent amount of copper nuggets lying around, so I built a wood furnace, made some charcoal, and then told my smelter to smelt some copper ore out of the nuggets. Now, everyone is just sitting around. I've been through the wiki page, and I have various metalcrafting skills enabled on several dwarves, and still nothing. Even Urist McMetalcrafter is just sitting in his room, staring at his new engravings, while I'm hoping that the dwarf wont tantrum and kill everyone.

What can I do to kick-start these dorfs into action?

DF General Discussion / Strange stuff you've found in Legends mode?
« on: March 12, 2010, 02:46:45 pm »
Like the topic says, if you browse through Legends mode, share some of the oddities you've found.

For me, my first world on the Linux version of 40d19, I decided to look through the events in the Age of Myth. I see a few things related to my Civ, but then I notice that the first leader was killed and devoured by a Hydra. Curious, I decide to look at the events surrounding it. Turns out that the hydra, Thran Iniuce Thuthuthudu (Thran Strapcalls the Tufted Persuaders), had been around harrassing some of the dwarves, and livestock. This time, he not only ate several animals, he attacked a few dwarves, only being able to kill the leader, whom he proceeded to eat.

After he left, I see a bunch of messages under Thran's entry under historical figures. Turns out that the survivors decided to worship the damn thing, along side their current pantheon. Including the new King, who decides to worship Thran before being appointed as King. His daughter, the current Queen, still worships him casually.

And dont get me started on the Demon who, amongst other things, decided to crucify a 2 year old elf.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Need help with an Obisdian farm
« on: February 28, 2010, 02:13:32 pm »
So I've been playing my first serious fortress, and decided that since I embarked near a magma pipe, that my next project would be to dig out a big room, and flood it with Magma and Water, endlessly farming the Obsidian. Unfortunately, I do not have access to Bauxite, so I'm stuck using the method I found here.

My problem is what to do when I need to remove the water. According to the link, I need floodgates on both levels of the farm, although I cant imagine needing the gates on the second Z-level. The other thought I've been having is: where should all the water go? I've considered making a large room a few more Z-levels down to dump the water in, so that it only reaches 1/7 deep, and evaporates, but I dont know how good of an option that is.
