First death for me was after i dug into the cavern layer and everything was fine for a while, just a few crundles and dralthas, no big deal...........then A GCS COMES OUT OF NOWHERE AND AMBUSHES ME!!!! 
he killed 2 of my guys and injured one, but i got him.

Survived a GCS attack with only two deaths. One dwarf alone killed it.

He tore its brains out with his pickaxe. And then pulled a leg off.
We butchered it and had a glorious feast.
same here, one just jumped me out of NOWHERE and killed 2 of my 7 dwarves and heavily injured one. oh, and im just mining out my fortress so i have no hospital or beds or anything to heal the dude......were all gonna die.   hahaa

It was changed because accidentally exiting the trading screens when trying to pause the game was a pain in the ass. The forum had plenty of threads asking for consistency and you got it. Personally I quite like it
so thats why he did it.....while i like how toady was addressing that problem (because it was a problem) BUT THIS ESCAPE BUTTON THING IS DRIVING ME NUTS.    it would have been better if he would have made it to where escape was only used to get out of trading menus and not the others......

I opened up a cavern that was only 10z down,when I get a message that I opened a tunnel deep into the ground, which was a spiral stairway leading down into darkness.. 3 seasons later nothings happened. Is it simply a passage and not a HFS or seige entrance?
Its not HFS, but be weary.....other dangers lurk in the darkness....

im having the same issue, my miners almost wasted away of thirst because they knew that they had to mine for the good of the fortress.......this concerns me for when i get to 80+ dwarves and i start messing with megaprojects....

im not sure whats going on with the z-levels right now....i just got a standard map with exactly 150 z-levels.    let me empasize this ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY Z-LEVELS, GAAAAAHHH....i have a lot of digging to do to get to the magma z-level. 

i could hear my fps crying....

If you attach a non-magma proof mechanism to the floodgate, the floodgate becomes no longer magma proof.   green glass floodgates are magma proof as long as you dont attach any non-magma proof mechanisms attached.   (if you didnt make that mistake its possible that because its an artifact, a bug made it melt) 
im using green glass floodgates on my magma system right now with nickel mechanisms and their holding up fine. (had to mod to make nickel mechanisms because lack of bauxite and nickel is magma proof)

heres a cool megaproject:
  drain a magma pipe, build a giant green glass fortress inside of it and move all your stuff and dwarves inside. then allow the magma pipe to refill around it. you are now forever trapped, in magma. 
if you get migrants, dont worry about them, just let them wander around until they go crazy.
