Also, a naming scheme for the "Griffon" line: 'prestigious' purebred dogs.

"Humanity had a long tradition of keeping canines as "man's best friend."  Accordingly, the Société was once quite fond of their furry companions.  While mutts had seemingly homogenized most of the gene pool, cloned purebreds brought back some of the most prestigious breeds from extinction.  Griffons, borzoi, briards, malamutes, alsatians, malinois, komondors, kuvasz, picards... the choices were endless.  Once these breeds began progenating, even middle class families could afford these long-lost bloodlines.  Many were even certified as 'support animals,' licensed to walk amongst the public without restriction.

...then the gates went dark.

As the pantries ran bare, the choice to feed the family pet or a child became a difficult, albeit obvious one.  Virtually no large breeds survived the Fall, with some smaller breeds just barely scraping by.

With the gates now open, the Société is just now returning to normal.  Their old friends may be gone, but they're not forgotten.

For now it is time to unleash the dogs of war!"

Yikes...

Let me explain my thought process.

So at some point we'd probably want to use PPC, so I was hoping to put in ship reactor design next turn or so.  Unfortunately, the Becquerel Fission Reactors bombed so hard, they probably need a full design to revise them.  I's also still like to do some version of the Dagger next turn too.  So next design phase (barring nothing too crazy happens in the batrep), I'd like to go for the Dagger and retry splitting the atom.

So what to do this phase?  Revision-wise, I'm happy with most of our systems.  Both of our guns are good (for now), as is the C5 Deck, and our engines.  The Rubik is also a good hull.  The Merchant Marine are also pretty legit.

Assuming the Bequerel Reactors are beyond saving this phase, our three most deficient systems are the gatekey, solar panels, and shuttle hull.

So our gatekey is more expensive than it should be, but the catch is that we've already mitigated around that by having specific gate ships.  We could revise it to be cheaper, but it would only impact a few ships with limited savings to the overall budget.

The default solar panels are still our only source of PPC in the immediate future.  They're relatively cheap and maint-free, but they only produce 3 PPC a slot. (Supposedly the batteries are also prone to exploding.)  If we can get one to produce 4PPC, our gate ships would only need one to operate the Gatekey v2.  Or we could use the extra solar power to start inventing PPC-powered versions of our systems.

The shuttle hull is arguably obsolete, except that our Rubik hull is specifically non-aerodynamic.  Operationalized as the Venus, it can do aero 3.  However, if we want to land on that terraformed planet, we'll need more than that.  So as a revision, why don't we slap some wings with ailerons on the hull, and see if we can squeeze a few more points of aero off it?

Of course there are other creative options for revisions this phase.  (Better defined EVA gear?  Re-engineering the troop compartment to better support Space Marine power armor?)  But these two seem the most straightforward and pertinent:

Revision: Solar-Battery Power Plant v2
Quote
Our existing Solar-Battery Power Plants just aren't good enough.  A measley 3 PPC isn't enough for the amount of space they take up.  While some had hoped to phase them out for nuclear energy... you can ask the crew of the CC Aura how that went.

SBP v2 produces 1/3 more power than it's predecessor.  Furthermore, our liquid electrolyte batteries have been replaced with a significantly less volatile solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) batteries.

Modified Values: PPC +1, Cost +1, Maint unchanged.

Revision: GCS-2 Aero Mod
Quote
The rediscovery of Ranachuri necessitates an aerodynamic fleet.  The Rubik is wholly unsuited for this, but the humble GCS-2 already light and streamlined enough to be successfully modified for further atmospheric flight.

In addition to general streamlining, the Aero Mod adds various lift and control surfaces vital for atmospheric maneuvering.  Using the lift provided by its wings, the modified GCS-2 should be able to climb and glide as the "aeroplanes" of the ancients did.

Of course, aerodynamic flight also demands a commitment to careful management of mass and center of gravity.  As a necessary sacrifice, one of the modular mid-slots is no-longer available: the mass & volume of the wings, the supporting struts, and required hydraulics for the ailerons now occupy this slot.

Modified Template:
Code: [Select]
[   ][Int][   ]
[   ][Wng][   ]

Modified Values: Aero +2 (4), Internal Unchanged (1), Cost +3 (12)

As for operationalizing... might as well replace the "Venus" with the "Terra..."

Quote from: GCS-2 Aero "Terra" Fleet Transport
VARIANT NAME:"Terra"
BASE HULL:GCS-2 Aero
COMPONENTS REQUESTED:
Code: [Select]

[HeA][Trp][Trp]
[HeA][Wng][nAC]

ROLE: Aerodynamic Fleet Transport

Alas the Venus.  Too beautiful to live?  While we're in the business of replacing her, why not push the envelope further to better support operations against Ranachuri?  Just like the Venus, the Terra should be able to transport two units of our ground-pounding berethren into a combat situation.  Yet with the Aero mod hull, our forces should be able to penetrate the bounties of terraformed worlds.  Yes, it has less gunnery than the Venus, but given the GCS-2's proven fragility, the afterburner engines should be used to run from threats when possible.  With a relatively high thrust to weight ratio, perhaps "speed is life" should become the Terra's motto.  This surely will help with takeoffs from short runways as well.

Corbin hides his relief that it's "only a murder(s)".  The underworld can be a violent place.  A robbery? A revenge? "Business by other means?"  Ultimately not his problem; it's usually safest to keep your nose out of other people's business.

...but there would be an investigation...

...and he's near the scene of the crime...

...without an alibi...

...and he has a black market gun in his cabin...

If this was his investigation back in the navy, somebody like that would be the prime suspect.  In fact, a good assassin (say an IIA one) would set up a patsy like that. All too coincidental, isn't it?

...well, shit.

"But they don't know about the badge," he thinks to himself.

He's be sticking his neck out, but better to be the accuser than the accused.

Corbin discreetly shows his badge to the crewman.  "I'd like to offer my services to the Captain."

*sigh*

So to summarize our turn thus far, we got a plasma cannon that we haven't installed on anything, and we STILL don't have speed 3 (except for a new version of the Peitho that might make it explode.)

So in terms of deployment, we dropped off our boys on F and our ITC's are almost back at the Hub.  Our only Peitho is holding the orbit with two obsolete Logos each with one foot in the grave.  We just made an Endeixi, but without SPD 3, it's two turns out from F.

On the upside, their magical-bullshit-aircraft-that-fight-in-space-but-don't-take-damage-like-a-spaceship were useful in slowing our invasion landings, but should be less effective now we've got beachheads.  (GM alluded to this five months ago.)  Also, our battle losses from long ago finally coughed up their SPP.  And our ITC's are finally home to load those idle 6 GPP.

That being said...

Quote from: Plan Finish It

Overall concept is to finish the ground push on F, to deny OPFOR its resources.

Peitho holds the line in orbit at F, while the two badly damaged and obsolete Logos withdraw C to A.  (We cannot afford to lose those 6 SPP for so many turns.)  The new Endexi pushes to C, staging for F.  Both ITC's return to Hub.  ITC-05 loads reinforcements and turns back around to A.  They are joined on the way out by a newly produced Endexi and a Hephaestus RV.  ITC-01-LIFT stands by at the Hub.

Given the 'emergence' of our adversaries Slaughterfields, our Emergent squadrons are costly deathtraps (6GPP total!).  Unfortunately, we don't have transports headed out there anytime soon.  As painful at it is, we should destroy them before our adversary does.  They'll be a loss, but better now, than later.

In terms of production, 9 SPP (of 10) are spent on an Endeixi and a Hephaestus RV.  5 GPP (of 6) are spent producing a new BMU-8 with new Trephines and Hammers.  (Finally using that Dozer!)  They'll also pack an additional set of Hammers for eventual delivery to BMU-2 on Foxtrot.

Endstate:

F: Peitho, with 3 BMU's on surface
E: 2 BMU's
D: 2 BMU's (with scrapped Emergents)
C: 2 Endexi and one Heph RV in transit to F
B: nothing
A: 2 badly damaged Logos enroute to Hub, 1 loaded ITC in transit to F
Hub: 1 ITC-LIFT standing by
(1SPP and 1GPP unspent)

Integrate with the locals/Clear Monsters:

Investigate the Island:

Although Vern had wished to stay closer to his estates, the Council has elected otherwise.  He must leave his business ventures and the ancestral manor, the House of the Seven Ethereal Leaves, in the hands of the family Steward.  Praying that hydrophobia applies to the vampires of Clan Methunes, he plans his retreat to the Lost Island.

If we wishes to save his estate through legitimate business, reliably commerce is a necessity.  Vern makes it known to the Council he would prefer the Morning's Glory to maintain relations with the mainland.

As much as Vern is wary of debts now, at least it's 'distributed risk' this time.  "The Council should get the Doge's patronage for this expedition."

Vern further petitions the Council, "The potential for the Giant Floating Crystal is endless.  We know not what calamities we may face, and it would be prudent to bring such a power foci with us."  Of course, Vern has one particular calamity in mind, a vampire assassin...  Though of course he wouldn't reveal that... yet.

Vern further speaks to the Council, "The Tower would be impressive, but who will see it out on the Lost Island?  Monkeys?  The Portal could prove a double-edged sword and I'd rather not be surprised by something dark arriving on our end.  A Guard of loyal men-at-arms would be useful, but surely able men could be easily hired later?"

Loading the ship for the expedition, Vern brings a large variety of botanical samples to plant the gardens at their new tower.  Many are seemingly decorative shrubberies, such as hawthorn, buckthorn, holly, and rose.  Others seem more culinary, with mustard flowers, sloe seedlings, and garlic bulbs featuring prominently.  If anything, the Council are due some flavorful meals and excellent landscaping at their new tower.  He briefs his fellow travelers, "As I'm sure you are well aware, it wasn't called the House of the Seven Ethereal Leaves for nothing.  While I cannot guarantee that level of amenity at our new home, I can bring the gardens at our new tower up to scratch."

OOC:  Note for GM.  So I might be overstepping my bounds assuming the tower starts with a garden.  Worst case scenario, say none of the plants survived the journey and Vern throws his efforts into something more appropriately basic at the tower.

You sonabitch, I'm in.

Name: Silvernius Regalis, High Patriarch of the Esteemed House of the Seven Ethereal Leaves, Leading Star of the Hemsworth Peoples, Companion of the High Table of Ambarella, Grand Knight of the Order of Gnu; AKA "Vern"

Appearance: An unassuming middle-aged caucasian male.

Specialization/Interest: Cantrips and other 'popular' magic.  "Vern" openly advocates to expand magic outside of traditional hereditary practices.  As such, he focuses on practical cantrips, most suitable for mass-market licensing.

Background: Of all the human wizarding lineages, is there a pureblood lineage more prestigious than that of the Regalis?  Silvernius' father, Irludium, was the prime scion to this lineage, and all it entailed.  Which would've boded well, except for two things: he was an only child, and a political anarchist.  (Per the slanderous anthems of an imprisoned bard, Irludium's father had irreversably emasculated himself in a failed Genitalia Maximosa transfiguration attempt sometime after Irludium's birth.)  Irludium's final rift with his father came when he eloped with a mundane common woman.  Irludium was disowned, but despite his father's best magical efforts, he never sired another scion.
Silvernius thus grew up in a mixed household, a magic-user who lived among mundane society and had many mundane friends.  It wasn't until his teens until he did his own research figured out the storied history of his lineage.  After a long sitdown with his father, Irludium, he heard the whole story of his father's estrangement.  When he became a man, he made a lone pilgrimage to meet his grandfather.  It had been decades since Irludium's elopement, and he had no idea he had a grandchild.  While he couldn't bear the shame of undoing his disinheritance of Irludium, he legally embraced his only grandson Silvernius as the prime scion of Regalis.
When the old man passed, Silvernius inherited everything.  It wasn't until he got a look in the ledgers, that he discovered this was a problem.  The estate was heavily indebted, and nearly bankrupt.  His grandfather didn't want these debts known in wizarding society, so he borrowed from Clan Methunes, a wealthy lawful evil vampire clan.  As was common in vampiric law, blood collateral would be collected upon default.
"Vern" has tried various scheme in the years since, but he's still treading water.  He's already liquidated or leveraged virtually everything in his state, but as a Council member, must keep a veneer of grandiosity in his lifestyle.  Although there are some murmurs of financial distress at the House of the Seven Ethereal Leaves, no one knows the full extent of his troubles, nor his contract with Clan Methunes.

MP(MagicPoints): 5.

Items: A common tin teaspoon, enchanted by his father Irludium.  Said to be proof that even the mundane can possess magic.

Test: Aqueous Distillado
As had been said, "One does not just walk into Mordor."  Some knight in shining armor just expects to cross a barren wasteland and ascend a mountain?  When his 2000 pound warhorse gets thirsty, is he just going to take it to a well?  You know, evil dragons aren't exactly big on developing water infrastructure in their domain.  What about "privy business?"  You don't want to be on a volcanic mountainside with only a jagged piece of obsidian in your hand.
Aqueous Distillado is a cantrip that collects aerial water into a small stream of slightly chilled water emanating from the tip the wand.  The potable water is crystal clear and free of miasma.  Usable not only by adventurers, but has a place in every household that values the heath of themselves, wife, and children.  As with all "Vern" products, such a spell can be licensed at affordable prices.

Corbin Fresno is at a dilemma.  Sure, he's safe in his stateroom for now, but in the long-term, solitude is a liability.  If they've been boarded by particularly murderous pirates, there's safety in numbers.  Sure the crew has arms, but as a former field agent, he's probably more capable and experienced in a firefight than any of them.  Furthermore, if there's shipboard crime, he's conspicuously absent, and thus a prime suspect.  Any false charges probably wouldn't stick, but he'd rather not come into any suspicion that would invite scrutiny of his baggage.  He would've liked to keep a lower profile, but he may need to step up to the plate here.

Corbin exits his stateroom and looks for any crew members, preferably a familiar one.  He should ask them whats going on, and volunteer to be of assistance.  If no crew can be immediately found, carefully work his way aft-ward towards the action.

268
Roger that.

GM's suggestion of an infrastructure design could up our resources.

The way it sounds, our troops aren't ready for transports yet?  If so, we can delay building another Venus this turn.

Infrastructure Design: Becquerel Fission Reactors
Quote
To say the Elysium Forge itself is a black box, is nothing short of an understatement.  Indo-tech built many generations ago, all meaningful knowledge of its design and construction is long lost.  The same goes for most of the torus itself.  While autonomous systems have kept all this functional, it also means that our techs barely know how to operate these systems outside of well-known SOP's on user-friendly GUI's.  Anything "under the hood" is handled by AI robots.

The Becquerel Fission Reactors are our first concerted attempt to change this.  Our R&D personnel have identified and array of fission reactors that they believe are underused, if not completely redundant.  We can isolate and then shutdown these fission reactors, allowing for safe reverse engineering.   These so-called "Becquerel" reactors will likely be too large to fit aboard a vessel, but numerous low-power photo-voltaic arrays throughout the torus can now be retired and replaced.  Overall, this will amplify the power production of the 12th Société, as well as provide radioisotopes for research, medical, and industrial applications.

Infrastructure Design: Merchant Marine Fleet
Quote
As helpful as the Irregular Fleet has proven, they're still quite... irregular.  With our expansion into Rose's Star and the beginning armed conflict, this fleet will be increasingly pushed into dangerous and uncharted space.  Accordingly, the Merchant Marine Fleet is attempt to professionalize and focus the Irregular Fleet into an auxiliary service providing logistical support to our growing military efforts.

Existing non-military force structure will be reorganized under a hierarchy of Commodores, reporting to Grand Commodore, who reports directly to the Navarch.  Naturally, Captains will retain command of their vessels and crew, however every freighter beyond a certain tonnage will have a uniformed military Liaison Officer on crew.  This junior military officer will certify emergency readiness of the vessel and crew, and provide a direct conduit between the ship and the military while operating in a combat zone.  While obviously an imposition on the freedom of our Irregular Captains, the Liaision Officer will keep key civilian vessels from being easy prey in a combat zone and/or aborting mission at the first sign of danger.

At the very least, the Irregular Fleet should become comfortable operating outside our home system, providing the necessary logistical throughput of resources between Roses Star and the Elysium Forge.

269
Good to hear from you!  I'm still in.  Looking forward to see where this all goes.

Mission Report Part (8/?)

Potter Properties' Heist of Martinez & Sons (Part Two)

Under the cover of darkness, your operators' Gator ATV pulls up to the back of Khadija Gilani's office.  Smoking a hand-rolled cigarette in the alley, the young woman takes the file folder off Team Leader Erik Heller's hands.

"How long's this gonna take, Dee?"

"Maybe fifteen minutes?  Maybe an hour?  Maybe more?  I haven't even taken a look at it yet.  You got somewhere to be?"

Heller takes a deep breath, trying not to lose his cool, "Seriously?  You know we got a tight timeline here..."

She flicks the cherry off her cigarette and stows it for later, "I know, I know.  But this ain't exactly easy.  Do you have idea how much White Out I'm going to be using tonight?"

Heller gives an incredulous look.

She laughs, "Just fraking with you.  Inshallah, this should be pretty straightforward.  Still, it'll take a bit.  You going to be waiting on it-"

He interrupts, "-no.  I mean, it's probably more secure not to loiter around.  Call me when it's done"

***

"You see any movement in the building?"

"Nope."

"And you got everything on the list?"

Hoxton gestures to a trunk full of cleaning supplies, "You were right, the 24 hour pharmacy had everything we needed."

Heller gives a sigh of relief and looks over a bottle of hydrogen peroxide, "Now here's the hard part..."

This wasn't the first time Heller had to clean up a murder, but it was the first time he'd have to do so under these kind of conditions.

It's after 11 as your operators re-enter Martinez & Sons.  With the amount of work to be done both thoroughly and quickly, both men make the intrusion this time.  They considered bringing a carbine or two, but already have their hands full with cleaning supplies and the soon to be filled body bag.

Keeping full light and sound discipline, your two men creep to the safe in the stairwell.  Crumpled in a mess of bloodied papers lies the body of Grandma Martinez.  She had the misfortune of discovering Heller's intrusion about halfway down the stairs.  He had tried to subdue her, but melee on a flight of stairs proved deadly for the octogenarian.

Heller had initially hoped he could rig the scene as household accident, but his second look confirms his misgivings of that plan.  In her tumble, the old woman took some major scalp lacerations, bleeding profusely on the walls, stairs, and floor.  Even without viewing it in full light, it must be horrific enough to look like a violent murder.  That alone wouldn't rule out a gruesome but tragic accident, though.  The real dealbreaker was all the loose paper covering the floors.  They didn't make any sense left in place, and cleaning them up would break up the natural pattern of blood stains and spatters.

He plays out the scenario in his head, "Grandma got up in the middle of the night and took a walk: never was seen again.  Psychosis from a medication reaction?  Senile dementia?  Some last ditch one-way-trip bucketlist fantasy?  She had a long and happy life, and maybe it was just her time, anyways."

If he and Hoxton could pull this off, her family think some version of that.  It's far-fetched, but so long as it keeps them from suspecting it had anything to do with the Tranquility Hill Report, that's all they needed.  Even then, the courier would pick up the report first thing in the morning, and the real estate closing was scheduled the next day.  They had barely 48 hours to blow the whistle, and the Martinez's would probably be too busy with funeral arrangements to even think about work.

"Just a simple plan," he thinks to himself as his gloved hands unfurl the thick vinyl body bag.

Wordlessly, your operators lift the 130lb woman wrapped in paisley nightgown into the body bag.  Carefully navigating the office floor, the ersatz pallbearers walk the bag out the back door.  With an unceremonious heave, the battered remains of Grandma Martinez are chucked into the trunk of your Landrover SUV.

With the body out of the way, your men get to work cleaning up the mess Heller made.  The bloodied papers are scraped up and into black trashbags.  This takes longer than it should, as some are already adhered to the floor by the victim's congealing blood.  With the incriminating debris gone, they break out the hydrogen peroxide.

If Ocean PMC had a staff biochemist (which they don't), they would explain the methodology as such:

"Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) is common and highly versatile oxidizing chemical compound.  It is a toxic by-product of various biochemical processes, that reacts and destroys proteins, lipids, and even DNA.  Thus, virtually all organic cells possess the peroxisomal enzyme catalase.  As its name suggests, catalase catalyzes the rapid decomposition of H2O2 into O2 and H2O.  When applied to damaged organic material, such as blood, the free-floating catalase produces an immediate fizzing effect with the H2O2.  Many metals also rapidly catalyze H2O2, which was how highly concentrated peroxide was used as 'monopropellant' in the Cold War space program.  In a monopropellant system, a 70 percent concentration of peroxide pumped through silver screen will instantaneously expand 5000 times its volume into a 1000 degree steam cloud.  As an oxidizer nearly as potent as liquid O2, high concentration H2O2 can also be ignited as a combustible rocket fuel as well.  Household antiseptic bottles thus are only in single digit concentrations for this and other safety-related reasons."

If Neil was here, this would be the point where he'd bring up that 'high-test peroxide' (HTP) was what Nazi Germany used as 'Substance T' in the their rocketry, most notably in the Me 163 Komet rocket interceptor.  Russians also used HTP for their torpedoes back in the day, leading to the disastrous loss of the submarine Kursk in 2000 when a torpedo leaked HTP onto a copper-lined torpedo tube.  All 118 hands were lost.

Heller instead has a more workman-like knowledge of his tools.  Peroxide works great as a destructive forensic 'indicator.' The foaming action quickly identifies the tiniest droplets of blood and other bodily fluids.  The destructive part is great for his kind of work, because it'll degrade (if not complete destroy) any compromising DNA evidence he may have left behind as well.  Also, unlike chlorine bleach, it doesn't leave a tell-tale scent either.

After several arduous hours, all stays quiet at Martinez & Sons, and the crime scene is thoroughly sterilized (both literally and figuratively).

***

"Mijo, is your mother out there?"

Miguel Martinez stretches as he gets out of bed in the morning, "No?"

Humberto Martinez shakes his head, "She's not here.  Could you check if she's downstairs?"

Miguel throws some pants on and trots down the stairs, "¿Mama?  ¿Dónde estás?  ¿Mama?"

The rear door is cracked open in the morning light.

***

Elsewhere in Rattlesnake Ridge, Hoxton wipes the blood off the Blackhawk! Thundermaul axe/sledge.  He doubts he'll miss this part of his old life.

***

Oscar Martinez's three kids bounce up the stairs playfully seeking their grandparents.  Opening the safe, he takes out the Tranquilty Hill report.  The courier will be here shortly, and they had a lot of money riding on this project.  A project this big was only the start of Martinez & Sons being sought for even grander work.  Humberto already had one foot out the door towards retirement, and Oscar hoped he could bring the family business interplanetary once the torch was passed.  Someday, one of his own sons might even open a branch office on Rivendell.  Imagine that.

"Seems prudent to give it a final once over," he thinks to himself.

Oscar takes the report out of the folder and goes to grab his morning Green Owl out of the fridge.  Leisurely walking through the office with the report in hand, he takes a long swig from his energy drink and flips past the cover sheet.

"Oscar?  We need to talk, Mijo."

Oscar sees his father standing direly, one hand on the wall, seemingly steadying himself.  "Is everything okay?"

"It's about your mother, Mijo..."

Oscar puts down the report.
