DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Because of Dwarf Fortress...

I think Giant spiders are cute. Just imagine one of them tapping you one the shoulder with a soft, questioning "Chiirr?" before nuzzling you so hard your face come off.

I think there's something wrong with me...

Actually, I already was like that before DF... I also loved snakes, cats, dogs, mice, and ants...  But I have an inexplicable fear of lobsters, their joints creep me the hell out (even when I'm fine with spiders).

So no, liking spiders isn't weird, I mean, I'm pretty normal, right?

...

right?

In this case, consider the Consort to be an official BFF. There isn't anything nasty going on, you sick-minded people.

And how is a pair of lesbians any more "sick" than a heterosexual couple?

I just found it amusing when I first looked because they were actually having children, which would have been a hilarious bug.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's with the Microcline hate?

I actually have about three times as much mica as microcline, though...

And mica doesn't even look any different from all the rhyolite I'm swimming in.

I do like to make my kitchens out of mica, just to imagine that it makes it more high-class, though...

I thought that, due to a bug, muddy outdoor tiles will never yeild any crops?

If that's the case, then maybe an underground river's "Biome" is only the 48x48 tile that the natural river passes through?  I'll have to make a safe fishing lake underneath the original river, then.

Although inheriting the consort of the dead king, even if you are a woman would be the sort of crazy thing I'd expect from DF... although mostly from the elves.

I hate to toot my own horn but... I'm getting positive feedback, but the entry for this on the Eternal Voting has only gotten one vote besides my own.  Since it only takes about 5 votes to get halfway up the list, I'm assuming most people's ideas are never even seen by anyone but the people who were commenting in the thread.

Wait a second, you got yourself a mating pair of lesbians?  ... That's pretty cool, actually.

I was actually going to run some tests with Dwarf Companion to see if I made my dwarves transexual, if they would still produce offspring.

Wait... umm... looking at those personal pages says they're both married to different dwarves...

I thought the consort was just the spouse that didn't inherit the royal title.

You can block your fortifications by placing floodgates behind them & then opening them when you want your Elite Marksdwarves to rain bolts down upon the goblins. That way you can have them stationed behind the floodgates & ready to unleash hell at the convenient flick of a lever. Actually that gives me an idea....

Oh, that works, too.

I was just going to put a hatch over the stairs to get into the bunker, and just lock it any time I didn't want them up there.

Actually, I think I'll still go with that, my control room is already flooded with levers from my magma system, my multiple drawbridges, and I'm still installing my waterworks.

Then, would an underground river make the entire mountainrange an underground river biome?

I am learning geology, minerology, the history of pottery, the melting points of various minerals, ancient farming methodology... oh, and I'm planning a way take my garbage to the curb using pressure plates and a flooding chamber.

DF Suggestions / Re: Porcelain crafting and high temperature kilns

Darkflagrance: I don't think this sort of thing is moddable, at least, not with what we have.  We would need a special catagory of materials, new furnace types, a stone grinder, new workshop types, etc.  The parts that would be moddable are the parts that simply add new glazes or add new formula for the composition of the clay body, and there's no real reason why that would be terribly much more work than only putting in a dummy reaction to let players mod in the details.

----

I've been reading up on this with my spare time during work today...

This, a type of salt glazing over clay looks like a good example of how to make upper-middle tier stoneware.  The article basically covers cobalt-glazed stonewares, and mentions lead-glazed stonewares as well.

I'm looking at the ways that earthenware and stoneware are made, and would like a little more information on the way that clay could be made for them.  Apparently, kaolin is rediculously common, at least in impure forms, from what I'm reading on wikipedia, and regular clay might just be fine for stoneware, while terra cotta might be made from almost any soil?

As far as I can tell, it's similar to the "make an above ground holding tank, fill it from a brook, and it still had flow despite being an enclosed container so waterwheels work in it" thing. A filled pond area takes whatever attributes of the water source it came from or is nearest to, including biome stats, for fishing purposes.

So this means that if I divert underground river water into multiple little ponds within my fortress, I will be "fishing from" the same river, depleteing the same stock, even if they are completely seperate?

What happens if I have a cistern half filled with water from stangant pools that I then fill the rest of the way with cave river water?

Fortifications just make it harder for arrows to hit things on the other side.  They don't block arrows completely, and a good enough combination of skill and weapon quality can entirely nullify any benefits fortifications provide.  This is why I suggest you not rely on them and instead set up your defenses in such a way that arrowslingers can never even get a shot off at your Dwarves.  To this end, Ballistae and Catapults set up in strategic locations at the far end of the long stretches of twisting corridors can be far more devastating than any Marksdwarf, since those have a range that far exceeds any bowman's reach and can kill far more than any single arrow can.

Or you could just bypass the whole issue with a clever magma fountain or atom smasher deathtrap, but where's the fun in that?

Actually, I already have a hallway of death with an atom smasher as a final solution more than suitable for turning back any seige, and I set up marksdwarves overhead from murderholes... but the gobbos never lasted to get within firing distance before they broke and ran, which was, as you say, not terribly much fun, so I set up this forward bunker to at least get a chance to shoot a couple arrows at them as they come rushing in.

I guess the best solution is to just keep my marksdwarves hiding until they hit the traps, and then spring my marksdwarves up behind them to cut them down as they flee.
