I noticed everybody says a "minimalist" fortress is starting with an anvil and copper... lies. Start with nothing, trade the first caravan plants for a pick or an axe... And you would be well on your way.
Any takers?

To make a long story short, a giant rat wanderer into my cage traps, He got carted to the stockpile, then, I tried to tame him. Bad Idea. He got loose, and is now causing tons of job cancels. How might ye suggest catching him? My wardogs don't even seem to care...

Just saw their latest commercial. It talks of Horses killed for meat. (We can all relate to that) Dogs fighting each other giant zombie elephants to the death. (been there, done that.) Cats neglected and abused Killed for their juicy meats for their skins for their fat for their bones and skulls For the good of all of us. (We all hate catsplosion) And Innocent Zombie seals beaten up on sight by peasants The military.
It's all so dwarvenly!

Sorry to double post/bump, but I set up cages, and stonefalls, and a weapon trap (with an artifact sword) But, halfway through, I figured, setting up tons of traps was pointless, as the cage would get him for sure, I open the door. A war dog goes, with it's litter, and they attack it, and it charges into the fortress, past my traps, on a killing spree. Turns out the "dust" was actually boiling and freezing "forgotten beast extract." Also turns out, it wasn't immune to it's own attacks, and ended up encasing itself in it's own frozen extract.

Ironic much?

So, my mayor, We'll call him Urist McShortlife, has mandated the construction of "certain goods" Namely, native copper Items. There's a problem with that. I have no copper. So somebody's going to get it. but... I have no sheriff, no royal/fortress guard, no hammerer, and no jail. How will they be punished?

It most likely has a dust cloud around it that suffocates dwarves. The easiest way to deal with it is putting it in a cage, or slaughtering it with a weapon trap.
Weapon traps? Sure, I can do those.

So, a forgotten snail, or something has taken up residence in my basement. Can I cage it?
Will throwing hundreds of cats down there annoy it to death? Can I put magma on it?
Do they fly without wings? What in the fortress does "Deadly Dust!" Mean!?
Edit:
"A gigantic three-eyed stegosaurid. It has a pair of spindly antennae and it has a gaunt appearance. it's puce scales are small and overlapping. Beware it's deadly Dust!"

Do what I did, and succeeded for several years at in 40d.
Embark in a sand desert. no water at all. not even murky pools. Survive on booze alone. Helps if it's a temperate desert, as you still get shrubs. Then build a giant micocline pyramid. Bury ALL nobles in golden coffin inside. Include lots of statues, traps, and doom apparatus. Try to steal the treasures in adventure mode.

I think you can create a custom reaction, I just don't have a clue about how to do it...
But I imagine something like this:

Coffee grain > Coffee powder > Coffee shop using the custom reaction (or even the still itself) > Coffee Barrel
Hm. If we can make custom reactions now, that gives me an Idea....
Dwarven Coffee + Dwarven Sugar + Dwarven Milk = Dwarven Latte!
