Decrypting files.  This is where my dual core doesn't suck!

Yeah, I /wish/ that game existed. Is a mock-up of a game that.... I wish... existed. I've been vaguely working on making it, got as far as this cute little demo http://www.sipan.org/~konstantin/bin.zip (Extract everything to the same folder, click index, then click the app window for to lock controls.) It's slightly more worked then it looks - the level's randomly generated and I'm just a few hundred lines of code away from having there be randomly generated weapons that like, attack with various effects and be built out of components that you could later take apart and cobble together and stuff.

You should keep working on it, I really like the look of it!  It reminds me of hacking in shadowrun.  :)

If I'm playing a game cooperatively with someone, I like to pick whichever character they think is useless.

It's not for anybody if you ask me. My experience with galciv2 was sad to say the least. Even Stars! appealed me more than it did. I guess it's just my opinion. Stardock happens to make games which get me excited about them, then utterly bored and disappointed a couple game plays later. It's like this sexy girl who feels like a plain blowup doll when you manage to screw her. Kind of like when you manage to push a whale back to the ocean and it swims right back onto the beach.

As an unrelated post:  Stars! was awesome.  :D

Heh, this whole glados@home has really dampened my enthusiasm.  2 weeks of ARG leading up to a few hours earlier release?  I work most of the day tuesday anyway, so it doesn't actually mean anything to me.

Of course, my enthusiasm will probably be renewed when I actually start playing the game.  :)

Cause Stardock sucks.

I kind of agree to be honest.  They built up that whole "Gamers bill of Rights" as a publicity stunt and then completely ignored it when people started to ask for refunds due to the overwhelming technical issues.  I pretty much lost all respect for them.

(Later edit: ok, wth governs these reductions?  I can't find a pattern)

Maybe it depends on how hard it was to complete.  So a game like Cogs which is probably easy to finish would only give say an hour, but a game like killing floor which is hard to complete would give 5 hours.

But who knows!

Looking good, bros. I'll just leave this here:

I'm more intrigued by the name than the screenshot strangely.  :)

So an algorithm is more of a broad function that can be easily adapted to other languages? Where do algorithms fall in something like a videogame, where there aren't really any "problems" to solve per se?

You'll always find a problem to solve.   ;D

I wouldn't worry to much about things like this yet.  Just try to make something that works, and as you get better you'll start to understand more about algorithms.

An example from my own projects is a map generator.  I've been playing around with different algorithms to generate 2d cave systems.  So far none of the algorithms really fit my requirements so I'll probably have to write my own algorithm rather than using one I find on the internet.

In practice, this means me mashing my head on the keyboard until I get some code that does what I want.  :D

A good example of an algorithm is a sorting algorithm.   If you have a list of numbers, there are quite a few different ways to get them to sort.  Some sorting algorithms are extremely fast for small sets of numbers, but extremely slow for more than a thousand numbers.  Some are designed to do well with large amounts of data, but aren't quite as efficient for small amounts.

Here is a bunch of different ones:

So basically an algorithm is just the series of steps you do to solve a problem.

If someone can refer me to a good roguelike tutorial too, I'd appreciate it.

This one worked good for me, although its python/libtcod-centric.  I'm sure the concepts all apply though.

I apparently write like Harry Harrison.

I don't know who that is.
