Its 253 and crest paddles is thriving. we stand at 98 dwarves. only 5 are children. military of 40 (20 iron equipped melee, 20 iron equipped marksdwarves... no flux stone!). food and booze in abundance. all live in comfort and wealth, provided by the export of stone crafts, shell armour, clothing and leather goods. its all going too well. the gobbos are at war with my civ, but not even a gobbo thief yet... i chose my position very carefully due to this - at the head of a valley, so it was easy to isolate myself with a wall, bridge and ditch after removing a ton of ramps to turn the hills into impassible cliffs. i WANT them to come in force so they can eat some of my several thousand silver bolts. any that make it past that should be easy for my meleesquads to deal with. no beast attacks either. if i have another stable year i am going down to the magma.

all in all, this seems to prove the old saying: its just too quiet.

watch now: within a season, megabeasts and gobbos ahoy. hopefully. if not, then some stupid megaproject...

100% this isnt a totally new idea - originates at least in the early 70's. Read up on Hawking Radiation - in theory, if a pair of particles (one matter, one anti matter) is produced near the event horizon of a black hole, it could prevent them recolascing into gamma rays as one (the antimatter one, in order not to defy thermodynamics) falls into the singularity, reducing its mass slightly... "evaporating" it if you will. the other could be detected, probably in the form of IR EM radiation...

Partial print:2 is a good setting, but causes flickering on some systems, such as mine. I use VBO - it has proven over time to be the most stable on my system, with high speed, no flickering, and no colour distortion that some of the other modes seem to have...

Annnyyywaaaay, i can confirm that ONLY having T set on a bolt type and NO OTHER types selected with T or C will mean only those under T will be trained with. an ambush rocked up and i removed the T and added C to my metal bolts, which were then used to kill the gobbos. its a simple workaround.

so, would setting bone to T and metal unmarked mean the metal would be unused for practice? would setting metal to C and unmarking bone mean only metal would be used when enemies showed up? [i.e the same as my workaround but simpler to implement?]

they have been nerfed, like many scary beasts before them... carp, unicorns, hippos... also, they are a good target for marksdwarves (also, spears).

pretty sure this is bugged annd they like to shot them based on cost (like how they grab weapons based on cost). i work around this by forbidding metal ammo most of the time. when good candidates for shooting show up, i forbid the bone and wood ones, and unforbid the metal ones. this tends to do the trick as my ammo piles are next to or in my shooting burrows.
