DF General Discussion / Re: Lazy Newb Pack [0.31.12] [V4.2]
« on: August 05, 2010, 05:55:53 am »
when I clicked on the dwarf fortress application only the left half of the consol showed anything

try maximising your window (or minimising then maximising - or any kind of resizeing). had the same issue using vbo draw mode (best for my setup)...

possible issue: restricting civs to a saftey burrow produced a sound-mayhem of cancelled and inaccesible tasks as dwarves tried to do things outside the burrow, couldnt, and cancelled. this got so bad during the siege that i removed the sounds for the relevant log posts...

i have had a sasquatch obsessed fort. shortly afterwards the same named sasquatch showed up, was slain and made into soap. recently i had a giant eagle obsessed fort. dozens of those guys showed up - one a year.

my current fort is plains titan obsessed. wonder when he is going to show up.

traction bench is the symbol next to the bed - also used for some plant crops...

posting here for easy access to reminders when updates come. this pack is useful for people other than newbs - only recently decided to use therapist and stonesense (added soundsense off my own back - might be worth adding it to this bundle), and this seemed the best way to get them. :)

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Question About Training/Sparring
« on: July 27, 2010, 12:26:28 pm »
might be worth a try. was annoying in my last fort to see my 5 awesome soldiers fully geared up sparring the hell out of each other, and the 5 newbs sitting round complaining about not having a helmet doing jack all to get better.

of course, this mght be wrong and those 5 newbs might have been doing somthing useful, like carrying logs. sigh.

Well, Sheildtouches fell. Nothing even that interesting - my 2 squads of troops (10 melee, 10 ranged) were busy scouting the first cavern layer, far too far away to be useful when an ambush of 8 goblin archers showed up at my main gate. they tore through the weakly armoured fortress guard headed by the commander of the guard (given second rate weapons as to not overpunish my worksdwarves), nd proceded to fill more than half my population with arrows when they found my safe area - granted, 3 had fallen to traps by then. on thier way out they wasted an elven caravan and diplomat, which is probably a good thing. this in itself wouldnt have been so bad, but behind them came at least a dozen, probably closer to 20 rhesus food stealers who did just that. then the squads in the caverns found a FB which was weak, but had a nasty syndrome involving mild paralysis, but seeing as my 4 medical dwarves were arrowed, it all went a bit annoying... with all the steel armour and weapons lying around it would make a tempting reclaim, if i wasnt worried about what nasties might come crawling out of the cavern...

EDIT: bah. seems df didnt like a saved mess of a fort. it corrupted on me. time to gen a new world and to do it all again then.

this might not be accurate but i have noticed a tendancy for dwarves lacking a full unform to not join in traning - out of my 7 soldiers, about 5 that have full steel plate train a lot. the other 2 that are waiting for thiers to be forged sseem to train less. this may need investigation - does uniformnothaving prevent training?

Sheildtouches is going well... a nice secure outer compind provides fruit for brewing, and we eat giant eagle roast thanks to my militia commander who has a habt of twisting her steel shortswort in the upper body of the great beasts - 7 so far this year, thankfully my woodcutter keeps away from them. my legendary stonecrafter churns out crap trade goods that have made us wealthy, and an abundance of fuel and ore have allowed me to train a very effective 7 member combined arms militia in full steel. no ambushes, seiges or thieves yet even though all civs still exist, but it is only year 2 and i still only have 40 inhabitants. current plan is to investigae the first cavern and set up a compund for farming some more underground crops without waiting for the ice to melt and irrigate my farms...

top tip - set the minimum number of dwarves to a lower number. it defaultss to 10, a full squad. i set it to 2, so once anyone other than the demo leader shows up, it gets underway.

same issue was what i originally had. my solution worked like this...

1: extract soundsense into its own folder within your df folder. it needs to be one directory deeper than the directory containing your gamelog.txt. [so your df might be c:/games/df... if so, your soundsense must be in c:/games/df/soundsense or suchlike.

2: ensure you have a new java version, availiable from sun microsystems...

3: i tend to run soundsense before running df, but you can start it second, its no big deal. it works best with df music set to off in your init file.

the box appearing and vanishing was the issue i had before updating java...

Its not working for me anyway.
My path is: F:\Spel\Dwarf Fortress MAPPEN\Dwarffortress 31.11\soundSense_13_71 (its in Swedish if you wonder :P)
I still get that flashing screen. And I have updated JAVA.

and you hve sund packs? well i am out of ideas sorry. :)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Worst Artifacts ever!
« on: July 25, 2010, 03:40:21 pm »

Any questions? ^^

i like artifact millstones. 2 however does take it a little to the extreme... especially tributing the construction of the first with a second. i would say a third with a picture of the second with a picture of the first on it may be on the cards.

posting here to recieve updates on this rater cool sounding tool. having difficulty getting it running at the moment - suspect my laptop lacks JRE...

EDIT: yea, latest JRE pack solved my issue. this is actually far better than i thought, and makes the game far more atmospheric than it already was (haunting almost)... looking forward to late fort fun a lot!
