I just had the messages:

You have discovered an expansive cavern deep underground.
You have discovered a deep pit.
You have discovered an expansive cavern deep underground.

appear all in a row just like that. not sure why. Looks just like the level 2 cavern...seems to have skipped level 1 entirely.

No, you have a not-bottomless pit connecting two caverns.

thanks for clarifying that, haven't had it before.

also, I appear to have some very laid back alligators on this map. My dwarves go by them all the time, freak the fuck out and run away only once every 4 times they go near it.... they went to chill out in my dining room for a while and my expedition leader sat next to one while he ate... wish I got a picture of that, but I'm not good with screencaps.

Embarked on a dark fortress. there was a temple there with floors built out of petrified wood and with walls of rocksalt. the walls were engraved. Just broke into a cavern, and directly beneath said temple there is a large engraved area the same dimensions as the temple. There are no other on-map entrances to the caverns than the one i just carved.

Sounds like it could just be some sort of HFS

that's what I thought at first, except there were no announcements about it, and it is directly beneath said temple with exactly the same size tile to tile.

I haven't read the whole thread, but I noticed that near the beginning, people were saying they disliked having to do ESC to leave menus. That's easily fixable by altering your keybindings via the menu. I was getting bugged by it, so I just replaced it with SPACE. As for the rest: low FPS (40-60-ish), the top levels of caverns are deceptively quiet (AAAH, WHERE DID THAT TROLL COME FRO-EAAUUGH!!), and no more easy soil farming. I loooove the new caverns and the seeming amazing abundance of mineral wealth present at every fortress. The embark screen is a bit more interesting now, and I can't wait until I have enough dwarves to form a decent sized military so I can explore the caverns more. Oh, and has anyone encountered things like drathans? At least I think that was what they were called. They seemed like they'd be fairly peaceful, but they were outside the bunker I had set up in the cavern, so I didn't go check them out.

Don't let them fool you. They may seem like peaceable grazers, but inside they are bonified dwarf killers. I lost five dwarves to one of the bastards. Untrained dwarves, but still.

I embarked on a dark fortress because I was hoping they'd be friendly, so I could have some free defense while I train up an army to slaughter them all in their sleep. They were, but, strange thing is, they're all human. even the prisoners. This amuses me greatly. Oh well, time to get training.

All 12 of my dwarves are starving because...I think I've encountered a glitch with seeds, because there aren't any.

Now, I chose "Play Now!" instead of planning, but I KNOW you still get seeds. There isn't even any seeds from eaten Plump Helmets.

WHERE ARE THE SEEDS?!!?!

...But before that, my fort's only doctor/woodcutter got his left leg mauled by a black bear, which he wounded horribly because there's pools of bear blood and dwarf blood EVERYWHERE.

I made a migrant with novice combat skill into the militia commander and sent him after the bear.

He ripped the bear in two. With his bear hands. Must've been helped by the doctor hacking at it with his axe.

I also made an irrigation system. A bad one. A very bad one. I almost drowned the hospital. Where the mauled doctor is sleeping/starving because THERE'S NO FREAKIN' SEEDS. I IRRIGATE FARMS WITHOUT DROWNING ANYONE AND THE SEEDS JUST UP AND VANISH.

First off, your dwarves are awesome.

Secondly, plant gathering.
Yeah, I'm doing that...hope Doc doesn't die in his bed...his injuries are yellow but he's not getting better. C'mon, doc. It's only ONE leg.

No, my dwarves can't be awesome. They're scared away by a fox. That nulls any awesome they may have. I sent Urist McRipsbearsinhalf (militia commander) after that fox and he chased it all over the map like a Tolkien Benny Hill. He never caught it.

When I say blood is everywhere, I mean blood is everywhere. There was blood in places that bear didn't even get near. I think the dwarves are tracking it around. The well is surrounded by blood. Pools of blood are all over the place. I really don't think this is how blood is supposed to work.

for seeds I think you might have to process the plants in the farmers workshop now. doing so still leaves you with the plump helmets, they just take the seeds out.

DF: Getting you back in touch with that little, angry man living inside of you.

DF: Got Dwarf?

DF: If one dwarf dies, it's a tragedy. If twenty dwarves die, it's a tantrum spiral waiting to happen.

Are forgotten beasts just in the caves or are they from the HFS? I haven't found one yet.

they attack from pretty much anywhere a cavern goes off the map. they might even come from above ground, but I haven't had that happen yet. I've had three of them now, but none of them came until I had a decent sized poppulation (40 or so) so I think there might be a popp based trigger.

431
ok, just had my second forgotten beast this year. It fell into an underground lake somehow in the process of the fight. Pumps are now being constructed So I can recover the corpse.

432
Ok, I only caught it after some dwarfs had started hauling it away to some random stockpile, but butchering the forgotten beast yeilded;

61 shells
24 lungs
36 intestines
a feather
71 fat
294 meat
99 bone
and a skin.

433
Just had a forgotten beast show up in my map. Hasn't gotten to my fort yet, will update after that happens. Under the units list it is listed as "Uninvited guest".

This amuses me greatly.

Edit: the beast attacked but didn't kill a couple dogs, mucked around in one of my secondary dining rooms, and was summarily slaughtered by a glassmaker in leather armor weilding a battle axe. A mere novice axedwarf took him down pretty quickly. Also, my dining room is now decorated with forgotten beast blood. Awesome. Is there a way to collect said blood in a barrel?

new semi-mega project. i'm gonna dig a shaft 40 levels down that opens up over my underground lake. I'm gonna build a ceremonial platform over it, and drop my victims enemies down it and see if they survive the impact. Afterwards, and once I find out how deep my magma is, I am going to do the same thing there. So, mr. goblin, what's it gonna be. The red pit, or the blue pit?

435
Great, now I need to look that up because I only speak metric.

According to Google, the omnipotent being second only to The One Toad, 40 feet = 12.19200 meters

Personally I like to measure things in body lengths, dwarflengths, and beard lengths. So, a human being about 6 feet, a dwarf being 4, and a beard being 1-2 on average, I'd like to think bronze colossi would be 6 humans and a dwarf, give or take a beard.
