DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Lava Traps
« on: September 05, 2010, 10:05:02 am »
Another thing: the reason the lava moved slowly is because magma is not naturally pressurized.  You can use a powered pump to give it pressure.  Having some magma above the z-level your trap area is will make it move much faster.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Getting water in a volcano

Is it possible to build some sort of reservoir to collect rainwater, drain it down a grate below my fortress, mine it under my fortress and build a well over it?

Yes.  As long as there is a decent amount of rainfall, you can get a lot of water from Murky Pools.  I once connected a few pools to supply a system of waterfalls in a fortress.

My advice: leave him be.

Build cage traps at the entrance to your fort (I like to build them after weapons trap so my weapons traps take care of as many siegers/ambushers as possible) and leave the colossus alone.  He will either get trapped in the cages or get bored and leave.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Waterfalls. How do they work?!
« on: September 05, 2010, 01:33:38 am »
The problem is your pumps.

Here's a rough side view of how a pump should work:

Z+1 :  #_________ . ~~%% . #
Z  0 :  #_________ . # . %%~#   (~ = water(with floor), . = channel, % = pump)
Z-1  :  #~~~~~~~~~~~~~#

There's no need for pumps on the bottom.  Pumps pump from open space to the level they are on.  They deposit their water on the opposite side, so they need room their to put the water.  A 1x1 fully enclosed room for a single pump -- water can escape diagonally if you're not careful. For your line of pumps, make sure the water can't escape on the ends of the line.  Doors work well to prevent this.

Also, do be careful.  With that many pumps you may end up accidentally flooding your dining room.  They pump fast.

Remember: a pump moves water like this:

____ <- (PUMP)<
~~~~(WATER)~^~~
DF General Discussion / Re: "Fertile Imagination" / engravers...
Well I did a quick not-very-scientific test in which I embarked, gave the 2 dwarfs with the best and worst creativity proficient engraving skill and had them each engrave a 6x6 area.  They seemed equally likely to draw boring or interesting engravings.  Nothing bizarre from either one though, unfortunately.
DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Why embark in 1050?
For one, it increases the value of the room, so you can keep your nobles happy.  Also I think it's cool to have scenes of your dwarfs chopping up goblins all around your dining hall.
Scenic entrance, huh?  Well, my entrance is pretty much permanently stained with blood and littered with corpses.  It's nice.
DF General Discussion / How dwarves learn the alphabet.
« on: September 04, 2010, 08:05:58 am »
So a recent topic in Dwarf Mode discussion got me thinking, "C is for Cookie" doesn't really cut it for dwarves, so how would a dwarf child learn about letters?  So I compiled a list that should help any young dwarf grasp the basics of written communication:
A is for Alcohol, Artifacts, and Adamantine Space Elevators
B is for Booze, Barrels of Unicorn Blood, and Broken Limbs
C is for Caverns, Caravans, and Catslposions
D is for Drowning, Dismemberment, and Dead Diplomats
E is for Elephants, Elf-slaughtering, and Engraving
F is for Flooding, Forgotten Beasts, and Fun
G is for Goblins, Gears, and Grand Master Pump Operators
H is for Hippies, Hammers, and Haulers
I is for Industry, Infections, and Insanity
J is for Jealousy, Joy, and Job Cancellation
K is for Kobolds, Kilns, and Killing Sprees
L is for Levers, Labor, and Legendary
M is for Magma, Mining, and Microcline
N is for Nobles, Naming Items, and Nerve Damage
O is for Obsidian, Offerings, and Ore
P is for Procrastination, Parties, and Prepared Acorn Fly Brain
Q is for Quern, Quality, and Quarrels
R is for Running Away, Rest, and Rotting Corpses
S is for Sieges ,Strange Moods, and Stark Raving Mad
T is for Traps, Towers, and Tantrum Spirals
U is for Underground, Urist, and Unfortunate Accidents
V if for Vengeance, Vomit, and Vermin
W is for War Polar Bears, Wafers, and Waterfalls
X is for other civilizations.  Dwarves don't need it.
Y is for Yellow Diamonds, Yetis, and Yelling for Body Parts
Z is for Zoos, Zinc, and ZZZZZZZZ
It's actually a pretty fun exercise. :D  Some of the letters really make you think.
Great, that's the best you can do?
How 'bout G for Grand Master Pump Operator.
118
This one's too obvious...
F for Fun!
I don't really know much about plaster or soap issues.  I made both and my doctors used them.  I'd try not to make too much soap though.
As for your guy without a hand, he'll still be able to work, just don't get him in any situations that would cause the loss of his other hand.  Stupid elk birds....
So this topic got me trying out some of the stuff in the arena and I came across this in the combat report:
"Bronze Colossus 2 releases the grip of Bronze Colossus 2's left hand on Dwarf 5's lower left back tooth."
Dang, of all the colossi, my dwarfs got a dentist.
