Evil creatures can con their way into positions of power, yes.  That's (probably) not a bug there.

Also, Bobrur and his triumphant pose makes me smile.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Noob guid for megaprojects?
« on: March 25, 2011, 06:30:47 am »
Here's my advice:

Come up with some grand idea.
Attempt to implement it.
Fail horribly.
Cherish the memory.

I have many fond memories of failed mega-projects.  :D

DF Announcements / Re: Dwarf Fortress 0.31.22 Released
« on: March 24, 2011, 10:59:22 pm »
One small bug (maybe?) I've noticed: it seems when honey badgers enrage, there's no message for it, just for when it goes un-enraged.

All the messages I got for the fort (just a test-embarked with 80 of the badgers)

EDIT: actually, I'm still watching this, and I'm not sure what's going.  There's a whole bunch of badgers randomly attacking things...there's never any indication in the announcements that something is happening.  That'd be nice to know.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Lakes, Lakes, and Lakes, oh my!

If there are that many lakes, you may be embarking in swampy terrain.  Try choosing somewhere more arid.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Is this normal?

They're using idiotic injokes instead of actually saying what they mean.

Yeah, I never understood the point of that either.

I do believe Toady frowns upon the spoiling of spoilers (even if 99.999% of the players know about it), thus, players use terms like cotton candy, clowns, and the circus to describe things.  It has evolved into a kind of joke.

Still, speaking of such things directly, without spoiler tags, is frowned upon. (alternatively a SPOILERS warning in the topic title)

Better safe than sorry.

Apparently you can build a support at the top level, from what I've heard.  Haven't tested it myself, waiting on the next bug fix release to get back into DF. (hopefully the mess with ghosts will be fixed)

(which is neither a mandolin nor an acoustic guitar, but a classical guitar, and I have to be pedantic about that because I'm a musician who plays all of those and is acutely aware of the differences even if they seem trivial to the philistines normal folks)

Ah, thank you for the clarification.  I somehow felt "acoustic guitar" wasn't quite accurate.  Now I know why. :D

So, not really a gameplay question, but, we all know the default music sucks.  Mandolins are nice, but after the first five minutes, well...

It most certainly does not suck!  Sure, I wouldn't listen to it (or anything) for more than a few minutes (unless I'm listen analytically), but it's quite an interesting piece.  Also it's not mandolins.  It's one acoustic guitar.

But I usually turn on a Pandora station.  Usually a rock station (with the likes of Stone Temple Pilots, Muse, Green Day, Metric, the Beatles, Foo Fighters, Nirvana), sometimes jazz (Gimme some Miles Davis or Dizzie Gillespie) or classical (woo Brahms) or broadway.  Sometimes I'll listen to Super Nintendo soundtracks.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Keeping Caverns Undiscovered: Benefits?
« on: February 04, 2011, 06:01:57 pm »
I'm pretty sure that I got all of the fancy fun plants on my one cavern layer when I made a world with just one.  You could always make a pocket world, embark and dig real fast, find out in about 2 minutes.

and they can't have miscarriage, which can happen while training or fighting

Yes they can, there's a lovely negative thought just for it. Very rare, though.

Male dwarves cannot have a miscarriage.  This fact really shouldn't be disputed.  :o

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Why 40d?
« on: February 04, 2011, 04:51:48 pm »
The one and only thing I miss from 40d was the speed of the game.

However, I recently started a 3x4, 60z-level (total!) embark in the new version.  60 dwarves, 100 fps.  Haven't breached any caverns or started pumping magma though, so we'll see how long that lasts. (Magma cannons are a must - it's named Flameshot!)

I don't think the coffins take into account indoor/outdoor, but I've never tested that.

Here's a tip for surviving those first ambushes: traps.  A few stone-fall traps are decent at weakening a small ambush. Cage traps will stop anything but only work once (then must be manually reloaded) so you can build a few of those to send that first ambush running.  Eventually you'll want weapon traps with some nice steel large serrated discs.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: 2010 - Caverns - Avoidance of and dealing with
« on: February 02, 2011, 09:09:31 pm »
Hi all,

In my current fortress I hit obsidian on the first level and I am suspecting that caverns may not be too deep down.

I'd just like to add, obsidian layers aren't in any way connected to caverns.  You're just in a volcanic area on your map, and one of the upper layers happens to be obsidian, that's all.  It can happen.  Now make yourself some nice expensive mugs.
