DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Oh great, a marriage... WAIT, WTF?!?!
« on: January 26, 2011, 09:32:44 pm »
I've had quite a few forts where my first 2 miners get married.

But yeah, I always get an announcement of marriage.

Yes, that one can be hard to find.  It's an "old" page so it won't show up with the DF2010 pages.  The 2010 page really needs an update, but I don't have the expertise to do it.  I haven't tested to make sure the 40d page is 100% accurate, but so far it's worked for me when messing with worldgen.

Being an article on 40d, some of the information is out of date, but that should give you a good idea of how to alter the world parameters.

DF General Discussion / Re: How did you learn about DF?
« on: January 22, 2011, 02:07:42 pm »
I don't really remember.  It was long before I started playing.  I likely heard about it from some forum post describing an insanely complex game with no real graphics that makes today's "hardcore" gamers cry like a bunch of little babies.

Of course, I was intrigued.  I tried it, saw that the "wagon" was considered a building so I proceeded to build a wall around it.  Then I managed to flood my mines (which I now realize my miners were digging soil, not rock) and there was a cat wondering around and I didn't know what to do with it.

I gave up for a while, then dived back in later.  I now cite this as one of the greatest games ever made.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Please Share Your Dinning Room Designs
« on: January 22, 2011, 02:28:38 am »
I like to go with a circular design - sometimes with an entrance on the side, sometimes the entrance is simply the main stairwell, going through the center of the room.  A few pillars for aesthetics, usually 2x2 sometimes 3x3 with engravings.  Floor's engraved in places, but not entirely, that just looks silly.  Everything's typically arranged nicely, circle-ishly like the room.

I've noticed that treated wounds will still show up on this list, but not state any conditions.

In v-w screen are the wounds dark yellow or bright yellow?  If it's dark, it's just a bruise, and I don't think minor bruising shows up in the wounds list.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Why not use a graphics mods?
« on: December 17, 2010, 07:03:28 pm »
I've read, from other users, that Toady does not want to hire outside help, period.  He programs DF all by himself because he enjoys doing so.

I personally play with a tileset/graphics pack, but many have stated that once you get used to the ASCII graphics, they are very easy to play with, more so than a graphics pack.  I've played with ASCII some, and it's not bad.  I may go back to it someday.  I'll definitely have to give a square ASCII tileset a try, as my biggest problem was always with the rectangular tiles.

Odd.  I guess maybe keyboards from different parts of the world use different symbols with their numbers? Maybe different kinds of keyboards? QWERTY, U.S., is what I had in mind.

63. Any time you find yourself with nothing to do, you throw a party.  It never bothers you if nobody shows up.

64. You try to put a stop to loud, useless parties by stealing tables.

Why would your keyboard be missing the 7?

Take a close look.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: CATS!!!
« on: November 24, 2010, 07:24:31 am »
Cats are useful. Just kill off every female cat you get and leave male ones. As for me, i dont want vermins eating my food and lurking at stockpiles causing bad thoughts. So cats are useful. And they are so cute)

Vermin eat your food stockpile, they become your food stockpile.  It's a problem that solves itself.  Happy thoughts are a luxury reserved for nobility.
