Didn't hurt my fortress any, just the beast.

Constructions, like walls and floors, can be set to be built on the sides of hatches and bridges.  Unfortunately, this results in disaster, as the floor actually doesn't attach to anything.

Doors, do NOT have lag time, so unfortunately you would just be opening a path for the goblins to escape the trap.

As for the pressure plates, when you build it, you'll be able to set all the options for it. (what triggers it, weight limits, civilian triggers, etc) Once it's built, you can't change anything except what it links to, unfortunately.


1) If I catch up on wall-building, so that I have walls on both sides right out to the last floor tile before the hatch, can my dwarves stand on the hatch to build to either side? (I guess I'll need to build a floor tile, instead of a wall, on the north side, temporarily, and build down that side first. But in this case the floor tile would be held up by the wall right next to it, not by the hatch.) However, can a dwarf even stand on a hatch that's only supported on one side?

A dwarf can stand on a hatch with support on one side, no problem.  I'm not sure however, if you can attach a hatch to a hatch with no other support.

If you're playing in the new version (DF2010 / v 0.31.xx), fish are much nicer.  ;D  The stories are from the old versions, where fish were a bit too...aggressive...and powerful.

No, and no.  In the future, the world will actively progress, with battles and wars and all sorts of good stuff, with your fortress participating in the outcome of the world.  Having multiple fortresses will not work in such a world.

You'll have to create a new world for each new fortress.

Well, a forgotten beast came and started destroying doors...in my magma pump stack.  Then it decided to hang out in the open space for a pump intake, getting more burned every time it pumped.  Self-destructive forgotten beasts, I love it.  I was really dreading having to send my militia in for this one, with it's "deadly dust."

You must have hit the 'n' key while looking for a spot.  That leaves a note, which can leave those !!!! on the map.  A good way to mark a nice spot when you still want to keep looking around, but you don't want to forget where that one is.

Forbid any magma-unsafe blocks/screws/pipes until the pump is complete.  Makes things easier.
