DF Gameplay Questions / Re: 2010: Can't use all my processing power.
« on: April 09, 2010, 02:01:41 pm »
Even so, it definitely wasn't made to run on multiple cores.  Just designate it to just one core, and move all other programs to the other two...

Wait, they've got tri core processors now?  Wow. o.o

They even have quad cores!  :o

I've tried doing that but it only got me up an FPS or 2  :-\  I never had this much lag with 40d but I guess that to be expected with a release like this.  So anyone know ways to boast your FPS with v0.31.02?

Many of the tweaks out there will yield around 5 fps, so don't think you'll suddenly get back up to 50-100fps in a mature fortress.

Dumbass military, My fort has lost about 10 guys because one of them whent to get a dead antman arm for the refuse stockpile, he got raped, then ten guys go after all the different bodeis and body parts. Theyre all getting stabbed to death because the Kill order just transforms them into recruit or wrestler and nothing else, theyre just sitting there. Fucking A.

Burrows help enormously here.

Old Maxis manuals were good. The SimAnt manual was practically a zoology book.

It can go just about anywhere under "dwarf", but must be in the specific save folder you are using. I tend to put it after the body_detail bits.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Losing is fun?
« on: April 08, 2010, 11:26:42 pm »
Depends.  Losing because a combination of some pithy miscalculation and ill luck slowly ground your young fortress to non-existence?  Not fun. Losing because you dug too deep and released That Which Should Not Be?  Fun.  I prefer not-losing to losing, generally, but I've enjoyed watching some of my forts crumble in hilariously awesome ways.

Actually, it's a lot of fun when the game surprises you and rapes you in a hole you didn't know you had. Assuming you know what happened, you'll be ready next time.

That elf child is far too happy. It's pissing me off and needs to die.

Congratulations. I'd say these elves are a success.

I almost always pick the middle to start and then rework things as needed.

There's a great picture on the wiki.
I just added another diagram and moved a bunch of still-correct information from the 40d page to the 2010 page.

That is a bit better from the old one. Bravo.

Yup. Any time. The four I had were all different, so I'm getting a kick out of them showing up. I wish they would stay longer, but I'm not taking down any walls soon.

you know, you could use that as a punishment/rite of passage for your dwarfs.spend a night outside the walls, and if you dont get eaten by the beasts you are worthy.

That would be like playing Russian Roulette, in my place. My first beast just went around destroying doors and workshops and left all the dwarfs alone.

I took to using no-cd hacks years ago, so I guess this is not much of an issue for me. I would download it if you still have the key.

I still love the Neverwinter Nights 1 manual. It was small in most dimensions, but thick enough it needed to be spiral bound.

I've had 4 now. One rampaged and left with no loss of life. 3 have come and go from the fringes. They didn't stay long.
If they left via the fringes, they have the power to come back at any time.when or if is the question.

To move water up, its just the traditional pump stack. I usually make it wind powered at the top, creating a nice above ground fortified tower with the windmills on top.
Pfft. Real dwarves use perpetual motion machines.

Which are made easier by all the aquifers.
