Other Games / Re: Unwritten Legends
« on: December 13, 2013, 09:46:01 am »
UL has a fairly small (at the moment) and dedicated playerbase, with about 20 people on most nights, jumping up to around twice that if there are any big, sweeping GM-run plots going on (at the moment, there aren't). It's a really open group of good people who play both good and bad characters, and even the cultists and criminals tend to try and make sure that new players feel both welcomed by and immediately involved in the world.

Other Games / Unwritten Legends
« on: December 13, 2013, 08:11:01 am »
Hey guys! Do you like MUDs? They fit right in with the whole texty DF theme, but I never see any advertised here. Anyway, here's a hugepost about my favorite one, Unwritten Legends.

Unwritten Legends is a roleplay-mandatory text-based game (automated afk experience game is not permitted, and all players must be in-character at all times) that's been alive and kicking with constant development for over a decade. On the surface, it's a sword and sorcery MUD with steampunk and magitek elements, but the rich history and incredible roleplay scene really set it apart. You decide your role in this world, whether it's taking up the badge and serving the law as part of the player-run imperial guard, delving into the arcane sciences, or just enjoying a cup of tea in polite company. The game is free, and it's just about the only place I've ever been able to find any really complex roleplay online.

I read your whole post, plus your notes on the site, plus the readme, and I still have no idea what's going on.

DF General Discussion / Re: Can anyone explain what a goblin drunk is?
« on: February 23, 2012, 11:28:17 pm »
Drunk is a skill that some lazy good-for-nothings have. Sometimes they get lucky and wrestle dragons to death or marry into power.

Or it could be that your kingdom is cooking all of its booze and only dwarven livers are strong enough to deal with the consequences of that sort of behavior.

DF Modding / Re: [MODDING] 0.34. QUESTIONS THREAD
« on: February 23, 2012, 06:23:35 am »
I am trying to mod in an interaction where the user mind-controls a living target and turns them against their enemies. After a lot of testing, I determined that the opposed_to_life and crazed tags are not good for any of this. I then decided to try using transformation to turn the victims of the power into hostile creatures, but they don't seem to turn on their old allies.

So far, it works in arena mode to a point--I can turn people into other creatures, but they don't attack, they just mill around.

Also, I'm trying to do this as a secret. I want these guys to form little conclaves like the Necromancers do, but they're not writing books or building towers or seeming to show up at all. I reduced the number of secrets to 0 during world gen. Why aren't my revolutionary leaders showing up and why aren't my revolutionaries violent?

My favorite was a Tickwoman.  I've known some men who thought all women were bloodsucking parasites.
Raise you a Lousewoman.
Not only a bloodsucking parasite, she loves to get in your hair.

Gimme a spongeman and a leechman and we've got thursday night at my neighbors' place.

A lot. Are you trying to make it animate a sword or something? That's not going to be possible.

Lir Bathespreads married Bathru Hailhops in 13. In 40, he became a necromancer. In 43, she died. That year, he wrote a poem about her, titled "Nobody Weeps."

Do the raws still support these tags for START_BIOME:
Code: [Select]
MARSH_TEMPERATE_FRESHWATER
SWAMP_TEMPERATE_FRESHWATER

Also can I change TEMPERATE to "ANY" and get  them to show up in any temperature Biome of those specific types?

There are very few freshwater swamps that aren't savage or evil. Your dwarves probably just aren't getting a foot in the door at world gen. Check out the Biome Tokens on the wiki for more areas to add.

DF Modding / Re: Any Success With Secrets?
« on: February 14, 2012, 10:03:15 pm »
I haven't had time to play with this, but if you add secrets to the raws, and then reduce the number of world gen secrets to zero, it should spit out ONLY your secrets. Reducing it to a low number should make yours more popular.

That's how night creatures and demons work, anyway. The problem is that the randomized ones so wildly outnumber the modded ones that they rarely get used.

2) A necromancer running up to me in the wilds and animating the dozen wolf skins in my backpack.

If you had necromancy powers, this would be a pretty solid way to prank people.

Slather a portabella mushroom cap in garlic butter and grill or broil it for a few minutes on either side. Plump helmet roast!

Vampires are NOT_LIVING, but not OPPOSED_TO_LIFE. Werecreatures are, predictably, 100% alive.

Mummies and animated dead gain the NOT_LIVING and OPPOSED_TO_LIFE tag, and will always be hostile. I don't know how Necromancers get away with having friendly undead around, since they don't share the NOT_LIVING tag. It could be that NO_AGING causes them to be thought of as undead, or that only the zombies they raise will be allied. I guess the easiest way to test would be to have an adventurer necromancer go plunder a tomb.

Vampire adventurers should be unconcerned with the undead, though a vampire who is part of a fortress will consider any attacking zombie an enemy.

I haven't had a chance to test this, but it's what the raws seem to indicate.
