Hey guys! Do you like MUDs? They fit right in with the whole texty DF theme, but I never see any advertised here. Anyway, here's a hugepost about my favorite one, Unwritten Legends.



Unwritten Legends is a roleplay-mandatory text-based game (automated afk experience game is not permitted, and all players must be in-character at all times) that's been alive and kicking with constant development for over a decade. On the surface, it's a sword and sorcery MUD with steampunk and magitek elements, but the rich history and incredible roleplay scene really set it apart. You decide your role in this world, whether it's taking up the badge and serving the law as part of the player-run imperial guard, delving into the arcane sciences, or just enjoying a cup of tea in polite company. The game is free, and it's just about the only place I've ever been able to find any really complex roleplay online.

DF Modding / Getting leather out of plants

I'm working on a mod that uses synthetics. I have a lot of great materials rolled in, and when it comes to the fibers, I can use fake plants to make civs gen with the items. The players don't see these fake plants in play, and have to use the plastics industry to make the cloth.

I want an intermediary cloth (between kevlar and polyester) for things like Nomex, and I want it to work the same way. I'm using the metal template for kevlar, and want to use the leather one for nomex, but no matter what I do I can't seem to get the game to just shrug its shoulders and pretend the nomex is leather.

I suspect that the key might be using a reaction token similar to TAN_MAT but nothing I've tried so far has worked.

To clarify: I can easily make it so a player can make leather items out of this stuff in game. That's not a problem. I need the game to do it on its own during world gen, so that the bad guys can have armor. That means I don't care if the solution is wonky.

Hey guys, I'm working on adding a subservient slave-like creature for one of my civs, and I've noticed that they don't seem to want to do even simple jobs like Hauling. They get names and have their own little social lives among each other, but I was wondering if there's currently a way (without resorting to abusing the caste system) to get them doing even minor work.

DF Suggestions / Graphical tiles respecting tokens

I'm working on a graphic set, and I'm a little sad that graphical tiles only respect creature name and profession. The caste system lets us do so much, so I propose an addition to the graphics system. [TILE_CLASS:FEMALE] could be dropped into, say, the dwarven female.

Then in the [GRAHPICS_DWARVES]

Dwarvenrealms is a gigantic mod that completely overhauls DF and thrusts it into the fantasy world of Elanthia. Over 220 new creatures, terrifying megabeasts, goblins, orcs, and the ever-present threat of the terrifying Dragon Priests stand between you and glory. Will your outpost bring you wealth and success, or are you only digging your own graves?

Dwarvenrealms is based off of Dragonrealms, a gigantic and well-loved MUD that dates back to 1997. Something about the universe always struck me as particularly enjoyable, and when I started this mod, I found that Dwarf Fortress's mechanics fit for many reasons.

DF Modding / What causes the flashing soil bug?

I've been extensively modding my game, and I've bumped into a hilarious bug where the surface soil rapidly cycles through every single type. I dig down into it and I get "rock" walls and floors.

Down below the first layer, everything seems normal. What's usually the cause of this bug?

DF Modding / Where is everyone's blood?

So I'm working on a mod that uses races and creatures from another game I play, as I'm planning on running a succession game.

Things were working fine for a while. I had occasional problems, but by gutting beards for now I've got everything stable. I decided to add the last few races and now...everyone's blood is gone! When attacked, they leak a dark gray fluid that crashes the game if I try to look at/interact with it. Basically any time its name would display, the game craps itself. The errorlog shows no problems.

Any thoughts? If I can get this down, it'll be easy for other people to make mods that allow for multiracial civs as well.

The game also crashes if I play for about a year, so I think traders are importing something my game cannot handle. I haven't yet seen a crash in adventurer mode, so I don't think it's creature-based.

I was working on a mod recently, and everything was going fine. I had my own megabeasts, my own civs, and my own creatures of every imaginable sort, when suddenly it all went belly-up and I started getting weird things. Elves (Whose civ I had removed from the game) started coming back, and cave crocodiles took over the goblin civs. Cave crocodiles led by a spirit of fire.

Can anyone tell me what's going on here? This is the second time this has happened when I was building a mod from scratch. All I've done is taken out creatures and replaced them with others, and changed up the civs a bit. It's also treating regular monsters like megabeasts, giving me treant and satyr megabeasts instead of the ones I wanted.

It's worth noting that this was all working correctly until about the time that I removed hippos from the game. Look, I know hippos are supposed to be powerful, but this is really going too far  :P

When this happened before, it was right after I'd messed with some of the subterranean animals.

Names and people and places are kind of hard to follow in DF sometimes, unless you've done some research and written things down beforehand. Why not integrate legends mode into Fortress and Adventure modes? I would love to be able to browse through histories of neighboring civs as I ran into them, much like X-Com's UFOPedia.

Heya, I've been working on a mod to add some Warhammer races to the game and decided to start with Ogres. I took the old ogres out of creature_standard and made my own ogres in creature_standard_warhammer, just so I could keep myself organized.

When I start worldgen, it never gets past "AGE OF MYTH:INITIALIZING", it just restarts the gen every time. I imagine I've made some error in my tokens, I just have no idea where.

Also, I made gnoblars as pets, but I don't think they're doing it. If anyone believes they are, I can post them, though.
