From the yellow and red A, I pressed shift+a and selected the giant rat.

I was amazed by what happened.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Eagles are the new elephants
« on: October 30, 2007, 04:08:00 pm »
After months of searching, the dwarves had picked out an absolutely perfect jungled site at the base of a mountain. A river flowed through the landscape, and despite low levels of local zombification, the surroundings seemed peaceful enough. They began unloading their wagon and built stairs down into the earth to escape the light of the sun.

That's when it came.

Gleaming bones draped with damp filth, the ossified avian shot forth from the treeline and tore mercilessly at the dwarves with its razor-edged beak. No one stood a chance. No one survived.

This thing is absolutely nasty. They fly in with their 10 size and have no qualms about going to town on dwarves armed or unarmed. The skeletal variety I saw came out of the trees and went right for my fortress entrance. If any of the dwarves got too fresh, it would fly up out of their reach and wait for one of them to split from the group, where they would be most vulnerable.

Its grim work completed, it simply flew away.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Brock Samson moment
« on: May 16, 2007, 07:16:00 pm »
Mid Autumn of 1059 saw the fortress of Momuzmingkil (Cryptsleopard) facing off against a force of ten heavily armed goblins.

Initially, the dwarves were panicked, and out of fear ran into the safety of their mountain home. The ballistae had been readied in advance, and were fired as quickly as possible, but each volley failed to find its mark. Empowered by their seeming invulnerability, the goblins laughed as they picked off every straggling dwarf and pack animal.

Bomrek Sathrikunib stood in the doorway of the fortress and shook with rage as his friends were slaughtered. As the goblins proudly strode over the bridge he had helped build, he could take no more. He ran out ahead of his comrades alone, and under a hail of crossbow fire, he managed to get his bare hands on one of the goblin pikemen.

An over the shoulder toss and a few steps away from the vile raiding party found Bomrek standing over a prone goblin at the edge of a mangrove swamp. Seeing the pool of water at his side, he hefted the bulk of the ugly creature above his head and cast him into the murky sludge. Charging forward, he braced his stocky arms against the beardless wretch and held it under the mire until its movements ceased. He wheeled on his other assailants, who had simply stared in horror at the brutal display.

They levelled their crossbows at him, but were too late--Bomrek's allies had been emboldened by his valiant display and charged out to be at his side. The goblin morale was in that moment broken, and the brutes fled.

They were not fast enough, burdened by their armor, and were caught by the fleet-footed dwarves, who wrestled each goblin in turn and choked the life out of them.

The three goblins who escaped will forever tell tales of Momuzmingkil, the land of Dwarves who fight without weapons.
-----
I never knew a dwarf to purposefully drown someone, but Bomrek dragged that green bastard to the pond and held him under until the bubbles stopped.

DF Gameplay Questions / What's up with mangroves?
« on: October 23, 2007, 08:35:00 pm »
Does anyone know why dwarves are fascinated with mangrove trees and engrave them all over everything? Is it just 'cause they're the only currently likable tree, or what?

DF Bug Reports / The Meeting that Never Was
« on: May 14, 2008, 07:48:00 pm »
Started my fort on a goblin site, brought enough dogs to do the job, but all my dwarves were incapacitated but one. I told him to engrave their story on the walls of one of the towers, so that everyone would know who killed the Goblin Master Lasher.

He did like two or three and then his job changed to "Attend meeting." He ran in circles for about 5 minutes, then went insane and drowned himself.

This was in mid-late spring, and he wasn't a noble, nor was there anyone to meet with.

DF Bug Reports / Crash for no reason
« on: November 01, 2007, 08:40:00 pm »
Business was as usual for my fortress. I'd almost completed the second level of my huge (78 space wide) building, when for no reason the game "encountered an error and needed to close."

I lost hours of work   :(

DF Bug Reports / Outpost Liaison left behind!
« on: November 01, 2007, 05:33:00 pm »
My fortress is about 4 levels down from the surface, with a massive staircase leading down into an x-com style entrance. It's extremely easy for a dwarf to enter or leave.

The visiting liaison went down to chat with my broker or whoever it is he talks to, and decided to stay a little too long. The caravan left and my dwarves went to sleep, but the liaison stayed behind, wandering the halls aimlessly.

I got the message, "A diplomat has left unhappy," and he went berserk right in my barracks. Luckily, the racket he made woke up the dwarves, who promptly rushed him and tore him limb from limb.

DF Suggestions / More music!
« on: February 23, 2007, 03:59:00 pm »
I absolutely LOVE all the DF music, it's so perfect for establishing that awesome ambience. I think that after a while, though, it can get old. I suggest making a theme for every season, like in Harvest Moon, and maybe even a few songs specific to adventurer mode, such as human and elf music. The current music would do wonderfully for Autumn.

DF Suggestions / Mine cars!
« on: November 06, 2007, 10:38:00 am »
It'd be really nice to set up tracks and a mine car system for hauling large amounts of stone out of the cave! I think it'd fix the "ogod there are rocks all over the place" problem, and with a little ingenuity, one could set up an automated system to take the cart in and out. Maybe via mechanisms or trained donkeys?

It'd look neat, anyway.

DF General Discussion / The awesome screenshot thread.
« on: September 06, 2007, 09:56:00 pm »
I see a lot of one or two post threads where people show off their great screenshots. I figured, "Why not make one big thread where they can be preserved forever?"

So here it is. Post your best screenshots here!

I'll get things started.

note: If you don't know how to take screenshots: It's easy! Just press the print screen key on your keyboard, then open up your favorite image editing program (paint works fine...sort of), and hit ctrl-v (or edit-->paste). And they say there's no magic in Dwarf Fortress!

DF General Discussion / Did I do these new monsters right?
« on: February 18, 2007, 02:56:00 pm »
I decided I'd try my hand at making some new critters. I threw together a moose, some elementals, and a few vermin. I haven't seen any of them except the raven and the bat, though, and there aren't moose leather items or moose meat. How do I make moose goods?

DF General Discussion / What a downer.

Sut was a deity that occurs most in the myths of the Nation of Dancing. Sut was most often depicted as a male human and was associated with suicide.
