DF Modding / what in the name of god
« on: July 30, 2009, 08:06:12 am »
I was working on a mod recently, and everything was going fine. I had my own megabeasts, my own civs, and my own creatures of every imaginable sort, when suddenly it all went belly-up and I started getting weird things. Elves (Whose civ I had removed from the game) started coming back, and cave crocodiles took over the goblin civs. Cave crocodiles led by a spirit of fire.

Can anyone tell me what's going on here? This is the second time this has happened when I was building a mod from scratch. All I've done is taken out creatures and replaced them with others, and changed up the civs a bit. It's also treating regular monsters like megabeasts, giving me treant and satyr megabeasts instead of the ones I wanted.

It's worth noting that this was all working correctly until about the time that I removed hippos from the game. Look, I know hippos are supposed to be powerful, but this is really going too far  :P

When this happened before, it was right after I'd messed with some of the subterranean animals.

Scamps was scratching at the guitar strings while the guitar was in its stand. I was going to go stop him when he managed to pluck a very solid A, at which point he stopped messing around and let it ring out. I will look forward to future hits assuming the strings don't start breaking.

He was telling you to record new DF music!

Looks nice, I'm gonna try this out.  Too bad there's no way to specify floor tiles/colors.

joelpt:  what graphics set are you using?  And where can I get it?

http://mayday.w.staszic.waw.pl/df.php Comes pre-packaged, so there's no guesswork involved.

I read a story about how ancient miners who were digging for copper would look for traces of blue in the rock, which indicated some copper ore or another. However, when they dug it out and refined it, it would occasionally turn out to be a useless (at the time) metal that they didn't want. They believed Kobolds were responsible, either enchanting the vein to look like copper, or stealing the ore and replacing it with false copper when nobody was looking. Thus, they called it "Cobalt."

Don't know if it's true or not, but it reflects the teutonic view of wild spirits pretty well.

Got room for another applicant? Sorry if that's a stupid question, it's really really late here.

Nah, Threetoe was joking about the swine flu, and I'm not sure he got yours, or just yours.  I think I got yours, since those are my symptoms.  Threetoe also had a scratchy throat.  Maybe he got two of them.  This is what I get for exiting my cave once a year, but I'm up for next year.

It's a good thing you just implemented health care.

No offense intended, but who is the creepy vampire in the back of the group?

He was actually pretty cool guy, even though he LOOKED creepy, while talking to him I did not find him creepy in the least.

Did he have a name tag, or is that too conformist?

lol, yeah he did.

That was me. My hair was covering up my nametag at the time.

Frankly I feel like I look a lot better in the "Starting up the fort" photo. That's not beer in my cup, it's blood!

I'm in.

I live in capitol hill so the brewery is like a twenty minute walk. I might be bringing one guest.

The lesson here is that nothing that comes out of the ground is safe and that's why there are no dwarves any more.

Maybe constant exposure to toxins explains the moronic/suicidal behavior of the little guys? The Franklin Expidition went to pot because there was lead in their food (among other reasons eerily similar to your average game of DF).

Hmmm. I'm sure civs can not be generated except for the world creation. And adventurers can only add to the population of an existing one. And, unsurprisingly, if you have no towns, there is no place to retire them. Otherwise, the idea is brilliant.

P.S. Apparently civs can not be destroyed either (after worldgen has ceased of course). If you kill all civ members with an adventurer, it will still exist. And, in case of a dwarven civ, you can still play it in fortress mode and get immigrants and caravans popping out of nowhere.

I was a little disappointed to find this out. I made demons and spirits of fire playable in adventurer mode and killed everyone in the dwarven and elven civs, but things went on like normal (until of course the kill count got too high and the game crashed every time it tried loading that world).

Metal boils at extremely high temperatures, and when it does, it goes away almost instantly. Does this work properly in the game, or does gold vapor hang around like steam? That would be weird--shouldn't the dwarf have just exploded and left behind slag and some very burnt bones?

I built a tower designed to make a waterfall in my central chamber that would flow down to a lower reservoir, then get pumped out and go back into the brook.

Somehow the outgoing pump didn't work and everyone drowned very quickly.

They are mushrooms so that's what they'd taste like. You can make wine out of just about anything, including mushrooms.

It would suck ass, but you could do it.

So howcome magma is such a common thing in DF, if we're only just finding it now?

I know you don't often do screenshots or movies, Toady, but it'd be neat to see how the wound testing goes if it hangs together in a viewable way, especially since it'll be a while yet before we see it in action.
