well amber can be "mined" in sand. Russia does that with big machines. Maybe the corrals get carried with the waves to the Beach?

Coral should appear like a minable stone in the ocean, and dwarves with high swimming should be able to go and cut it.

And those that like the current way should not fear - if I understood it right, it will also be possible to hit several organs at once with, say, a sword, meaning attack realism. All we need to do then is have bows fire log-size arrows!
You mean like the ones Seargent Detritus of the Ankh-Morpork city watch used before his clusterbolts?

Well that was just a ballista, really. Unfortunately, however, dramatic law states that the biggest and coolest weapons must never be appropriately used by good guys. If they are used at all, it is only to show the enemy recovering from/evading/blocking it in order to demonstrate how badass they are. I can't think of one time where the weapon did anything more than scare the crap out of everyone.

SIGH

Wolf attacks ocour not only when they have rabbies.

They need to do way instain wolf> who kill thier dwarfs, becuse these dwarf can't frigth back? It was on the news this morning a wolf in The Fabled Teeth, who had kill her three dwarfs. They are taking the three dwarf back to Uremrigoth too a lady to rest. My pary are with the adventurer who lost his drunks ; i am truley sorry for your lots.

More to the point, ambushes happen because it'd be boring if they didn't. In the real middle ages, there were more wolves and fewer people, so they probably looked pretty tasty, but no species has lived anywhere for very long while continuing to prey on humans (See: european lions), so the most likely thing is that wolves pretty quickly learned to stay out of our way, except in isolated incidents.

The Mengthiz Letters

Dear Ma and Pop,

It's beene quite a while since I wrote to you, and for this I am sorry. When I last wrote I spouke about a new outpost being instaled with in the Dour forrests, with me as one of the primarie Miners--me, youre little Lolor!

this is a place fabled forre it's terible dangers, but do not be disheartened. Things are not so bad once we are out of the sun, as Ingish would say. We dig through ore-rich mudstone, which is in, my opinion a solid and goode rock.

Dear Ma and Pop,

Our woodecutter has met with an unfortunate circumstans wich I dare not relate for fear of putting Pop in one of his Ways. Insted, please note that I have taken up engraving and have been dutifully recording the histories and romans of are glorious civilization and of the tales of our lord Canyonjade, giver of wealth and keeper of gems, may he never inadvertently strike magma. Amenne

Dear Ma and Pop

I have taken a name for myself, as is custom, and frome now on may be adrest as Koji, tho I will not fault anyone for calling me by Lolor, which is a goode name in all respects and I am thankful for it. even though it often was mayde fun of in my girlhood

I have ardentely beene digging, ensuring that all dwarfs do live within humble corridores and such, as is custom, and that no commoner myself included lives above their station. it Is tough, unrewarding work and thus the only kind that matters

Dear Ma and Pop

To-day I strode out in to the forrest to confront an horrible foe--a werewolf! The fiend had laid low a wrestler sent to us from the mountainhomes and it was my duty to retrieve his bodie. Let it be said that I posess Ma's strength of arm as well as Pop's fleet-footed doging, and with but few strokes of my pickaxe subdued the man-beast.

to-night I will begin plaiting my beard as is custom for one who has beene victorious in battle, though I shall keep the plaites simple and modest as befits my statione.

Aww. Shows how good my reading comprehension is.

I'll just take a random dwarf then. Anyone who's not in use. Just assign one to me and let me know what their personality block and job are.

Sign me up. There's a narrow chance I won't be able to complete my turn, but I'll know beforehand and let you guys know to skip me if that's the case.

If Ilral hasn't been claimed, I'd love to take him (Give him the nickname Glowcap, I have no idea why). He's got a good imagination so he has a longing to engrave things, and he'll give you the best images anyway.

If he's dead or already taken (I have read the thread but may have missed it) I'll take any other dwarf. Name him Koji and let me know which he is.

Describing a creature more fully does mean that it will provide a different challenge. Currently there are only two types of creatures--crossbow-susceptible and non. It'll be interesting to have squads of different type of dwarves on call for different types of monsters (maces for skeletons, axes for antmen, swords and spears for goblins, etc). It will also add to the challenge of the game by necessitating the use of more than just one kind of tactic.

Personally, I'd love for there to be more HFS--digging up Uldaman-style ruins on accident, or breaking into a cavern full of crystalline spider monsters would be pretty cool, especially if these things carried rewards (IE artifacts and good gear lying around in the ruins, plus art and history).

Hell, I can see a point in the far future where you discover a ruin, then take control of an individual dwarf adventurer, go explore it, claim the stuff you find, and either sell it to other civs or go back to fort mode and make a museum to house it all.

So Toady went to an Obama victory celebration party last night, I take it?

I don't know if Toady lives in Seattle, but I know he lives in WA. There were places here in the city where cars couldn't get through because the streets were full of ecstatic democrats. Everyone got drunk last night. Everyone.

Or maybe he lives in Renton and it's a bunch of tantruming republicans taking to the streets. Who knows.

Some fort designs work really well with individual bedrooms--one of my favorite forts had a bedroom assigned to a dwarf, and stairs in his room that led up to either a communal work area, or if he was a master, a private workshop that only he could use. Below the room was a communal storage area, and everyone who lived on the same block did the same thing.

So my metalsmiths would all live under a set of forges and smelters and above a bar/ore/weapon/armor stockpile area. It worked really nicely. The only time they had to go anywhere was for meals, and even that could have been avoided.

Personally, I'm ok with an unskilled speardwarf killing a dragon. But, it should be a one in a million chance. You know, the stuff grand stories are made of. And said dwarf should become an instant hero of the people for such a grand deed. As it is, you just sort of groan and wonder why the dragon wasn't cooler.

I was playing as an elven spearman and fought a dragon. I brought a bunch of humans with me and watched them all get burned alive--I only escaped the firebreath three or four times because of my elven speed.

We fought out in the woods and I had to really work to avoid getting trapped by the spreading fire. I threw my extra spears at the dragon but they didn't do much damage, so after rolling out of the way of another blast of firebreath, I charged him and hit him in the neck, which caused a lot of pain and bleeding. He broke my leg but I kept at it and eventually peirced his brain, which put him to bed for good.

I found it to be pretty cool. I don't know what you did wrong.

As for the change itself, a big part of it has to do with sustainable militaries (a reasonable amount of people have to get better and keep fighting) and megabeasts (which lose an eye or something and spend 200 years lying in a cave crying about it).

I reccomend the dinosaur mod, or an updated version thereof (I last used it in an old 2d version). Even the herbivorous dinosaurs were pretty belligerent, and a pack of deinonychus was enough to induce xkcd levels of terror.

« on: November 02, 2008, 03:14:53 pm »
The most fun I ever had was back in the 2d days, one of my first maps had old-fashioned elephants and because I didn't know how to properly hunt back then, I'd occasionally have...problems.

The fort died when my terrified marksdwarf ran into the fort to hide, and a herd of elephants followed him.

New version? I started in a tropical place with a cave, and before I can get ANYTHING done, webs start spraying out over my dwarves and a GCS leaps from ambush and kills them all.
