We have the sprite's entangle for indiscriminate slowing of enemies already.

how about you get 3 weak recipes
antidote
black tar - weapon poison, causes pain, hard to wear off
superglue

I'd really prefer the darkstick, if that's possible. I'm a vampire, I like the dark. Also, why am I healing from resting? I thought I needed blood to heal?

Using the available potions as poison coating will be useful, though.

+1 Clothier for my skillpoint, since it seems fitting in light of recent actions and we don't have anyone with that skill yet.

Edit: is there something I can do to cultivate my ingredients in a more time-efficient way than gathering them from the environment?

Oh, I have a bunch of ideas, some practical, some not so practical.

  • antivenom: self-explanatory
  • poison: for coating weapons with
  • reverse glowstick (darkstick?): sucks the light out of an area.
  • regeneration elixier: regrows chopped-off bits over time. Though that would be more economical as an enchanted item that can be passed around as necessary.
  • trance potion: focuses mind on one task, boosting training/learning, but makes one otherwise useless while it lasts.
  • glue: probably doesn't need a recipe
  • mimic potion: turns into whatever cheaper liquid is put into it. Probably not useful aside from being a potential blood source
  • softening gel: turns inorganic matter malleable so it can be worked and shaped like wet clay. Wears off eventually. Possibly useful for crafting unusual stuff.
  • freezing potion: cold counterpart to molotov potion
  • philosopher's stone (various types): turns a source material into another specific material
  • happy juice: cures depression
  • generic explosives: Boom!

I suppose I should figure out what kind of recipe I was inspired for. Is Bernard still suffering from the poison, and if yes, will he recover on his own?

"Thanks," the vampire says cheerfully. "I'll see what I can do. One's going to the dwarf already, because head wounds are nasty, but if I can scrape together the ingredients, I'll reserve the second one for you."

Yay, we won without anyone dying! That should solve the brain issue for a while. I'll be using two of the javelins for a while, but I don't insist on claiming them permanently.

Miran is happy to have survived the battle, even if she was impaled on a javelin during it. She is even happier when Rargh brings her one of the corpses, and has a nice, revitalising meal, even if biting into the slimy skin is kind of gross. She is in the process of wiping the blood off her face when Bernard approaches. "Sorry, I don't know any recipes for curing poisons," she tells him.

Shift 1:
After recovering her boomerang, the vampire addresses the rest of the combatants. "Since I'm dressed for the occasion," the vampire motions at her swimwear, "I'm going to check where these frogs came from while I search for ingredients. Keep an eye on me, will you?" She grabs two of the javelins and dives into the water. She suspects that there may be an entrance behind the waterfall, and swims in its direction. When the current gets too much for her to handle, she starts jabbing the javelins into the ground and using them to drag herself forward. Anchored such, she inches forward as if she was a rock climber using picks to scale a cliff.
Search for ingredients and entrances underwater

Shift 2:
The vampire retreats to her workshop, her facemask protecting her from the hot fumes as she starts preparing the most coveted of her concoctions: fresh healing dust. She gives the first dose she finishes to Dragnar, who took the worst injuries during the fight.
Make healing dust ($80 of ingredients still in reserve before this day's shift 1), use one to heal Dragnar.

Shift 3:
Miran is rather horrified about enemies suddenly popping up from the river, since she has so far been sleeping on the island in the middle of it. She puts her coffin into the water and lies on it as if it was a surf board, then paddles toward the shore. With some effort, she carries the wooden casket on her back into the recently excavated communal sleeping area, and takes a nap.
Move coffin to the dug-out area and sleep.

Have them guard a 1 tile wide burrow next to your fortifications.

As a side note, something I discovered about training armour user that should be obvious, but wasn't to me:

To train it, your dwarf should actually be wearing armour. Regular clothes work at a much, much reduced rate. Just put a fully armoured dwarf without weapon and shield into the danger room, and you'll see that it doesn't take much longer to reach legendary than for other skills. One that's only wearing clothes instead will still take ages.

For a quick and easy test, go to arena mode and give a dwarf candy breastplate, mail shirt, helm, greaves, 2 gauntlets, 2 high boots, grandmaster armour skill.

Then throw 10 goblins with steel short swords and armour of your choice at him. After five minutes of them wailing on him at 200 FPS, he was still alive, missing all his teeth, and has a few bruises. I added a goblin with a warhammer, who one-shot him with a blow to the head (He was unconscious from exertion at the time). Candy armour is just awesome.

148
Armor skill?  None.  It only makes them faster while wearing armor, and since candy is so light it technically floats in water (if DF supported buoyancy) this doesn't help.

According to my tests in the arena, this is horribly wrong. In 13 one-on-one duels between steel-clad dwarfs with steel swords that only differed in skills (one was grandmaster armour user, the other was unskilled armour user), the grandmaster won 12 out of 13 times. Since I had given them no shields to test this, the grandmaster took hits too, but more blows were deflected. In some duels, the grandmaster also lost limbs during the fight, but they were in general smaller, less vital parts.

What's an alim? Neither wikipedia nor google gives any relevant answers.

I'm going to use my old case, which is an Antec Sonata II, that I've been using for several years. As for buying double 560 Ti's instead; I don't think it's worth it, 2 of them will cost the same as a 580, and I think having a good single card is better for upgrade possibilities later.

Thanks for the opinions!

Alim is the power supply, I think.

I'd also advise against a dual configuration, it's plain overkill.

However, you are dead wrong about the upgrade possibilities. Consider this: the 560TI and the HD6950 have 80% of the performance of the GTX580 right now. They also cost less than half as much. They will also be able to run any game coming out in the next year no problem. Now, in a year, new card models will be out. It's extremely likely that some of those future cards priced like the 560 and 6950  are right now will be much better than the current 580. So, if you upgraded to one of those future cards with the money you saved by not buying a 580 now, you would be better off, and still not have spent more than for the 580.

As a side note, the Sprite also has one healing dust that I paid him with. Do crippling injuries require some special procedure to heal?
