We didn't really have a choice. The shaman kept buffing his water elemental, and we were mostly positioned as well as we could be, especially for the hostage plan. If we'd backed up further they'd have needed to round the corner to get to us, but we'd have been spread out more and the shaman and ranger wouldn't really be any closer to us.

Of course, if you're talking about my scouting ahead and getting two-shot by darts, yeah, that wasn't really productive. I don't think it hurt anything aside from taking me out of the battle, though; maybe they were more alert than they would have been, but the plan was always to let them know there was danger ahead.

Well, the elemental might be on a timer? We can't just summon up permanent imps in battle, can we?

It gives the enemy another target to shoot at than just your poor homeworld.

Guess I'll have to join battle. This would have all worked so much better if we hadn't engaged prematurely.

Miran makes her way to underneath the bridge and pries a large wooden plank off, then crawls onto the muddy river bank, trying to keep out of sight. She is going to use her new, versatile tool like a shovel to scoop up a lot of mud and aim for the closest enemy's eyes, making up with quantity for lack of skill. Once finished, she is going to cautiously approach the battle, keeping out of the vines, and trying to flank one of the enemies. She will use the plank to block. Not like a shield - she knows that the wood won't stand up to a proper hit. She simply wants to make an enemy weapon bite deeply into it so that it remains stuck to the heavy log - giving her the opportunity to dart into brawling range and go for the jugular.

In my current game (furthest I have played so far), I have visited 46 systems, surveyed 12, and haven't encountered any aliens yet. I did find jump gates in some systems though that I didn't build, and a few wrecks in others. Is this normal, or is my game messed up? I did get three error boxes during game generation.
Sometimes this just happens.  It's very random, as there are 1000 systems in the default starting setup, and only one starting NPR. However, there's also a chance that each inhabitable world will spawn a civilisation, so even if the starting alien race has vanished, you can still find new playthings.  And that's not counting the precursors, swarm and invaders, which (if you've got them turned on) might be anywhere. It's unusual to not find anything in 50 systems, but it's not at all an indication that you've broken something.

Ah, thanks. I suppose I might also have missed some while passing through, my sensor tech isn't that great. Perhaps I should try again with a higher spawn rate and real systems off.

"Well, so much for the ambush plan," Miran thinks when battle breaks out without the intruders charging into more exposed positions. With sign language, she prompts the Dryder to toss her into the river, where she attempts to dive out of sight and head for the opposite shore, hidden underwater. She's aware that she isn't a good fighter, and will therefore lurk underneath the bridge close to the shore. If the opportunity to surface behind one of the enemies and get a sneaky bite attack in presents itself, she will take it. She also prepares to leave the river if the water elemental ventures close to the shore, since she's sure she can't defeat that in its own element. That shaman needs to die.

Miran glances nervously at the exit Shigon just came from, and gets ready to follow the script. She settles on "Gyahhh! Don't eat me!" for her first frightened scream when the time comes.

Welcome back, Hastur!

Oh dear, it looks as if Shigon might need someone to suck the poison out of his wound.

"You'll do," Miran decides after a brief look at the half spider, half-human creature. She starts clearing her throat in preparation for the performance. "Now should I go with girlish shrieking or more articulate pleas for help? Decisions, decisions..."

Surface adventurers? Are they going to come down the ladder?

Miran stops what she was doing, and tries to locate the direction from which the sound is coming from. "Intruders? Guys, where will they be entering from? In any case, I suggest an ambush. Those of us who don't need to breathe could wait for them underwater. Extra points for style if we can lure them on that wobbly wooden bridge first." She looks aroud. "Alternatively, from a distance, I look like quite the fetching young woman," the vampire says, striking a pose that makes her tattered dress cling to her curves. "I'm sure if the adventures came onto the scene of a helpless young maiden being dragged away by, say, a horrible minotaur, then the more hot-headed among them may do something rash, such as dash ahead and split up their group."

Miran's eyes widen in surprise as the spider creature approaches her, but she accepts the offered assistance easily enough. As he mentions custom creatures and blood, a vision of huge, bloated ticks filled with delicious liquid ripe for the taking starts dancing before her eyes. Before she knows, she is cackling madly. Remembering where she is, she chokes off the laughter and coughs at the back of her hand. "Ahem. Well, I certainly wouldn't be adverse to a permanent source of blood. Perhaps giant ticks? In any case, you should ask the minotaur about this, he is our beast trainer." She eyes Seogv's spider-like lower body speculatively.  "I could use some threads to make nets from, though."
