Miran wakes in her coffin, yawns, then kicks the lid open so she can stretch. The vampire glances at the inhabited tree next to her sleeping area curiously, then wanders over and knocks with her knuckles against the bark. "Hey Sprite, are you in there? I could use some assistance with my herb garden. I'll use half of the first harvest from it to brew some potions of your choice in return."
Shift 1: tend to herb garden

After inspecting the burned-out room, Miran sighs as she spots the heat-warped shards of destroyed alchemy equipment. It looks as she will have to prepare her new work area from scratch. On the bright side, she no longer needs to worry about flammable substances near her workshop accidentally catching fire. Everything in the sooty-walled that could burn already did, which makes the place the ideal location for her purposes.

"Hmm, can't build the more advanced stuff without help." The vampire decides to start with something a little less ambitious than a proper laboratory. She selects a large, already flattish stone as a worktable, and proceeds to design a hearth and a stove, with enough room to stuff a fire imp inside the heating compartment. She begins construction of her kitchen in the north-eastern corner of the former workshop. Cooking may be a bit of a waste of her talent, but that doesn't mean she isn't good at it. Even though she is a vampire and can't appreciate the taste. She still remembers how good food smells like from life, and that should be enough, right? Right?
Shift 2: build a kitchen, and if there's time left, expand it to a brewery.

After a hard day of work, Miran retreats to her coffin and takes a nap.
Shift 3: ZZzzzzZZZzzz

Is turning into a bat a researchable vampire ability?

Miran averts her gaze from the raging inferno, unable to see into the fire's blinding glare. Her nose, however, picks up the scents of various familiar fumes. She backs away even as the giant lizard walks into the flaming room, and puts her coffin between herself and the door. At least, being dripping wet might prove useful at this point.

"Watch out! It smells like explosives and poisonous fumes in there!" she shouts after the reptile. Not that she is worried about the poison herself. There is, however, nothing she can do about the situation, since she would be blind in the burning room. "I'll need to see if someone can make me tinted glasses," she mutters to herself as she walks away from the disaster area and back to the portal cave. She prods at various plants, lichen, and growths as she goes. Her coffin fills with a few interesting-looking rocks from the rubble, which she suspects may contain minerals useful for her art. The slender undead pauses as she notices a particularly vile-smelling woodlouse and squishes it underfoot, then examines the remains. Useless, she decides, but perhaps there is vermin with more useful glands around?

As the blonde vampire arrives at the river's shore, she gives the surface a speculative glance. "Might as well while I'm already wet," she decides, drops her burden, and dives into the water to survey the riverbed for more ingredients.

Shift 1: look for alchemy ingredients in the cavern and at the bottom of the river.

Shift 2: if useful ingredients are found, claim a patch of riverbank (or river bottom) and start a herb garden to cultivate them. Find someone more competent to help with this.

Shift 3: put coffin on tiny island in river, arrange some rocks so they'll drop into the river and make a loud splash if something creeps onto the shore, take a nap.

Miran is startled by the loud, rolling noise of something exploding in the distance, and ducks her head. Lifting her coffin on her back, she sneaks toward the sounds of battle. While she hasn't had time to get familiar with the dungeon's layout yet, ignoring a potential invasion would be highly unwise. Sighing, she traverses the cleared areas, dripping water with each step. She hasn't even had time to properly dry off yet! Oh well, maybe she'll get a meal out of this, at least.

OOC: Locate fight, but do not get involved. Try to find someone who can explain what's going on.

Dibs on the alchemy stuff, since I actually trained in its use.

I assume I have a coffin since I'm a vampire. If not, feel free to replace the coffin in my introduction with some random piece of floating junk.

Miran's head breaks the surface with a loud splash, sending little droplets of water into the air as the vampire shakes her head like a dog. She blinks, squinting up at the glowmoss that renders this section of the cavern uncomfortably bright, and looks around, treading water. A dark, oblong shape surfaces behind her, and there is a hollow thud as the coffin bobbing on the rippling water bumps into the back of her head. Grumbling, the slender creature rubs the tender spot and clambers onto the wooden casket, using it as a flotation device as she paddles toward the shore.

Mining noises ahead catch her attention as she sits on the riverbank and wrings water out of her tattered blue dress and long blond mane. Crimson eyes focus on the salamander digging close to where she had appeared from the portal. "Hya!" she shouts, standing up and waving at the miner. Her friendly smile bares two pointy, elongated incisors in her upper jaw.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Preventing Doctor Breaks

Put a goblin into a windowed room in your dining hall, with doors in front of the windows so the dorfs can't see him. Connect doors to lever. If doc is on break, pull lever so he sees goblin, gets scared, and interrupts break (untested).

The logical outcome would be a traumatised hellhound and a beetle screching and running around with some very precious parts on fire  :D

I suppose we could use some dedicated masons and miners too if we want to turn this hole in the ground into a proper dungeon. I'd have taken that instead of 2 points in Ranger, but really, a vampire who can't hunt her own food would be kind of pathetic.

Can we use the fire imps to fuel our future metalworking and glassmaking operations?

Admittedly, 100 vs 100 is slightly less useful than (1 vs 1) x 100 battles.  But it's the difference between pressing c + enter 100 times and setting up 100 different battles all over the arena, since doing less than about 20 1 v 1 battles is meaningless.

If you want to easily set up 100 1v1 battles, you can edit the arena map (\data\init\arena.txt) to have 100 enclosed areas next to each other.
