General Discussion / Re: [:3] Things that made you HAPPY today thread.
« on: October 05, 2010, 12:17:22 pm »
A cat fresh and still dizzy from the operation table ran away in stumbling panic from the vet's parking lot of the town I live in. People searched for days but came up with nothing, however, nine days later the cat has now shown up at it's home, having crossed an area of more than two miles (bird's way). This made me happy, and deserves a :D.

Those are metric/Swedo-Norwegian miles, by the way. That means 2 miles=20 km.

Alright, scriver, I'm seriously questioning your logic at this point. I'm not certain where you get the basis for any of this, really. If prostitution is illegal, no one will do anything to stop sex slavery. Everyone involved will have commited some crime, and as such will save their own hides. If there is no penalty for being a prostitute, hiring a prostitute, or owing an establishment for the making of money through prostitution, then not only can regulatory officals be hired to ensure there is no disease, abuse, or trafficing going on, but every customer who suspects somthing is up can call the police without getting arrested.
This is true. But you also have to realise that legalising prostitution does indirectly legalise trafficking. Take for example the EU, where EU citizens are free to travel across all borders (especially for work purposes). Surely, you realise that it would lead to a kind of "sex emigration", where whoreganisations (yes, I am so proud of that pun I used it another time) would hire poor people of poorer countries to sells sex in richer countries. You said above that people will do anything for money, and this is also true, but it doing something because you feel it is your last way out does not mean you are doing it out of your own free will, or that people should stand by and let it happen. Even in a case where above events happen completely within the law, I can not say I feel it is a good thing (and I guess, neither do you).
I guess the whole rationalisation of the deal makes me uncomfortable on a very basic level. Even if I realise it is making things a little bit better, I can not help but feel as if people are sticking their head in the sand when they say that "hey, it'll help some people". I called you (people) out for being naive before, but I realise now that this is me being unreasonably idealistic - I want to help all people out of the prostitution business, even those that "chose" that path.

I am sorry scriver but it seems that it comes down to one basic fact.

You think regulating a industry will make it harder to control.
If you think this, then either you have misunderstood everything I said, or I have made a poor attempt to express myself.

It is now over 3 a.m. here in Sweden, and I am so tired I can hardly make any self of my own mind any more. Also, I admit I got caught by the "somebody is arguing with me on the Internet! I must reply, even if it will completely take us away from my original standpoint!" -fever earlier, and I did come out of it until now. So yeah, /talk it is.

No. We killed them. Neanderthal weren't primitive modern humans, the were a separate species who lived in the same time frame as early modern humans, before being killed off/outcompeted.
We did inbreed with them, though. Neanderthal genes has been found within the majority of the human population, with the exception of Africans.

It's not the sex that should be illegal, it's the buying, and the trafficking. In Sweden, for example, victims of either free to report both abuse and disease without fear of arrest.

This is not going to make it overnight legal to buy slaves. It will make it less economic to do so in fact.

They might not tell you. There could be any number of reasons for them not to - threats to their and their families lives amongst others.
Or maybe, you don't even speak the same language.

Once again, economics will make this make less money.
How?
Or am I misunderstanding what you're saying here?

Quote
That makes no sense, it things are accepted and regulated it will become easier to find humain rights violations, not harder.
It will be harder, since they would be buried under a ton of bureaucratic paper work.

Quote
But all the issues you have brought up are already here and this will only help to fix them.
That's the point - it won't. It will only hide them, and make it easier for organized crime to hide behind it (the legislature).

This is a good thing for everyone. There will always be prostitutes, and there will alwayss be people who will hire them. Arresting them for that is just stupid, and now both sides will be safer. Now, disease and abuse can be properly reported without fear of arrests and everyone will be better off.

And this is different from what I said...how?[/quote]
Arresting people for buying sex in not stupid. It is necessary to have sex-buying illegal to stop trafficking and sex slavery.

I think you're just paranoid about this. Someone who's honestly in this nightmare situation would try to do somthing. It's just human nature to try and escape a bad situation through any avenue, and someone would notice if their prostitute seemed abused in mind or body.
No, it's not. In fact, unless you count suicide as an escape-way, it's human nature to cope with bad situations rather than trying to escape them. This is the same reason why abused wives (and husbands) so seldom leave their significant other.

No one is arguing the legalization of human trafficing.
You are, in an indirect way. Legalisation of prostitution would make it easier for traffickers/sex slavers to conduct their "business". You have to view the whole scope of things, not just how it will effect your navel area.

In my eyes, you people are just far to naive and trusting to be able to see the seriousness of the issue. Nobody in today's society sells their own body out of free will.
Quote
Sure they do. People will do anything for money.

And of course people sell themselves out of free will.
Of course, some do. 99% don't, however, and that last 1% doesn't matter - it's the one's whose being forced against their will who do. And once more, legalising prostitution wouldn't help them, it would only work against them.
Also, compulsion do to things can have many shapes. It's not always a gun to your head, yet it's still not free will.

Anyway, this won't result in sex slavery, if anything it'll reduce it. If you go to a legal establishment and one of the prositutes tells you they're being held hostage, well... you'd tell the police about that, wouldn't you? I'm trying to see where your logic is coming from, and the only way it works is if everyone in the world is an apathetic sadistic monster.
They might not tell you. There could be any number of reasons for them not to - threats to their and their families lives amongst others.

You make sure they are getting paid, and then if they are they can fucking leave
As said above, that might not be an option. If prostitution where legalised throughout the EU, you'd have these whoreganisations moving people all over the place - but especially from the eastern parts to the west. These people might not know how to leave, nor have the knowledge/language skills needed to communicate their state. Their pay might be sent back to "relatives" in the homeland. In fact, many victims of trafficking today are sold out to the traffickers by their own relatives.
In my eyes, you people are just far to naive and trusting to be able to see the seriousness of the issue. Nobody in today's society sells their own body out of free will.

Scriver, do you say this is a bad change?

Or are you just saying prostitution is bad in general?
I'm not saying it's a change for the worse, if that's what you mean. But on the other hand, legalising prostitution also feels like a way of sweeping the whole issue under the carpet and pretending nothing's wrong.

If you regulated the Whore houses, you would really cut down on people being forced into prostitution.
No. There would be no other way of knowing whether or not people where being forced into it than having them fill out a form saying "I do this of my own free will". There would be no way of knowing whether they were lying or not.

You do make a valid point, but if it's legal and regulated then we can work to combat that.
We can, and do, with it illegal as well.

Bravo logic.
From your answer, I draw the conclusion that you think legalising prostitution will stop people from forcing women have sex? Your wrong.

Personally, I think prostitution should be allowed. In a perfect world, where one could be certain the prostitute is selling her body of her own free will. Legalising prostitution in today's world, even if confined to whore-houses, will not ensure that basic requirement.

Legalising the number one cause of slavery in the modern world. Yeah, that's fucking great. (Pun totally intended)

It's sucking up bucks and viewers that could have been allocated to shows that don't have sub-zero quality levels?
Except reality shows costs next to nothing. That is in fact why producers like them so much.

I actually love the concept of reality TV. Something that isn't acted, something where the emotions and results are all genuine. It's what I look for in (procedurally generated) games. Where did it go wrong?
The failure to realise all people are actors, especially when their actions are broadcasted to an audience of thousands?

In real life, making a bunch of people think of the number 6 and then a vegitable tends to cause "carrots" to be the response about 50% of the time, for reasons unknown.
Ah. I thought it had something to do with six being close to sex, and was thus going to answer "phallus" as my vegetable.

14/15, and as a non-US citizen I simply guessed on the Supreme Court questions (picked the answers that with the most common sense.)
The answer made wrong was on "the Great Awakening", since I don't even know what that is. Even if it is what I think it is (the American counterpart to the period Swedes calls "the wakening"), we Swedes don't usually "idolize" leaders of such movements enough to care to remember individual people - even less the American ones.
So over all, it was a nice result, I think. Oh, and I'm an atheist/agnostic, raised by not-actively Christians, raised by semi-actively/religious Christians.
