Dear Urists,

the bars on the floor serve a very noble purpose - they allow us to have many beautiful waterfalls in various corridors in our fortress. Incidentally, that means that there is nothing but lots of water underneath them. Does destroying the bars under your feet still seem like a good idea? Yes? Then by all means, please go ahead and do it. It is always fun to watch natural selection in progress. In fact, we will be implementing the design in other parts of the fortress.
So, thank you Urists, all 11 of you. You are visionaries, really. Who needs the fortress guard, or chains or a hammerer when we can have an automated justice system?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Age of Goblins

~Embark. The only miner encases himself in ice while digging 5x5 pond. Surface has no trees.
~Disassembled the wagon, built depot. Got the business moving. Fort grows to 136 very fast.
~Vucar Shemamkol, the pet cow calf starves to death
~128 dwarves killed in a tantrum spiral. Number is precise, because I had to personally crush all of them under cave-in. 8 survived, though.
~Stone is found. Hurray!
~up to 10 miners encased in ice while digging the stone, and subsequently breaching the aquifier.
~90+ dead in goblin siege led by clown (bull fiend, bloated, beware the sting!)
~up to 30 dwarves dead in an ambush trying to collect last year goblinite.
~Queen arrives
~5 dwarves executed for not producing aluminium statues.
~Current fort population: 112

With death toll of 250+ (counting various misc. deaths), and migrants STILL coming in clusters of 2 to 5, it's no wonder goblins dominate. I guess I am to blame...
Is it chronological? Did you have 100+ dwarves before you found stone? If yes, then holy crap.

I don't think anything happens in the world outside your fortress, not yet. So it must have been something in your fort that brought about the new age. What probably happened is that goblins already were dominant, but as long as there were some powerful creatures (titans/megabeasts), the game mechanics didn't allow the goblin age to come. What was the name of the previous age?

This baby is the lastest innovation in fine dwarven engineering. Let me tell you something, son, ALL craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. You can move almost 1.5x MORE STONE WITH THIS than with that shoddy old wheelbarrow.

A wheelbarrow? Is that some sort of a mobile burial chamber?

Don't need your stone hauled, you say? What kind of dwarf are you? Don't answer that, just look. Look. Closer. You know what that is? THAT'S PLATINUM, BOY. When Urist McFancypants spends two months carrying this fine vehicle to where you actually want it, all the ladies will be paying attention.

But platinum deposits are small and evenly scattered everywhere around the fortress, not just in one place. How would I design a useful minecart rail for that?

And if you have a megabeast problem (don't be embarassed lad, it happens to us all) you can fill this sucker up with bins full of blocks and RAM IT RIGHT UP THAT DRAGON'S SCALY CLOACA.
I am intrigued, but dragons are hardly a menace. How would such a minecart fare in a narrow corridor filled with &&&& ?

Now look over there. No, over there. Yeah, that's it. You've got tattered socks all over the place, you slob. You call that a stockpile? SHAMEFUL! With a GENUINE Catten & Sons minecart you can kiss those sprawling piles goodbye!
Due to my divine intervention, the world has been devoid of socks for some time. Dwarves no longer have the concept of a "sock". They were more trouble than they were worth. An interesting point though.

DF Gameplay Questions / minecarts
« on: June 14, 2014, 08:40:06 pm »
I am ashamed to admit it but ever since they appeared I have never used them. I am not looking for an explanation about how they work, the wiki covers that. What it doesn't seem to cover is my motivation for using them. It seems to me that I can do things more efficiently without minecarts. Hauling is not a problem when my fort is on 2x2 due to fps concerns and there is always at least 50 dwarves idling. So...if you feel like doing it, imagine you are a minecart salesman and I am an old grumpy man who believes he doesn't need any.

I just got crippled by a forgotten beasts that has a poisonous bite AND shoots webs.
I'm fairly certain that can't happen. FBs will have one or the other, never both.
No, they do sometimes. Spiders always have webs, and leeches always suck blood.
I didn't expect it either, I thought the FB would be a pushover:/ Apparently it was based on a GCS, I didn't pay attention to that.

My fort was built around a large cyllindric hole that I dug out.On one z-level I designated jail in such a way that a large part of fortress could look at it (and prisoners could look at other, free dwarves).
One constantly unhappy troublemaking girl tantrumed and went to jail. There she gradually stripped naked, throwing her clothes at the free dwarves across the pit. Eventually she was completely naked and miserable and exposed to everyone. She died of madness in the end, but she did manage to hurt some dwarves with her throwing.
