DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: so... considering the move from 40d

Whats wrong with legendary migrants anyway?

1. Most games initially place you in the situation where your assets are small and worthless, then let you slowly advance and bulid up. Getting a legendary glassmaker in the first year from a migrant wave feels like playing a level 4 fighter and finding a +5 greatsword or getting Mobile Warfare from a goodie hut in 3200BC.

2."High Master" is a title that sounds naturally respectable. A community where half the population is a high master of some trade is an utopia, not a normal thing.

3.I see a red dwarf in a room and I assume it is an engineer. But no, he is actually one of my engravers. His title may be engraver, but he is still red and lister among engineers.

Not sure about this, but maybe you embarked right next to an evil biome and some of it reaches to your map.

I am not sure if it is possible to get evil features on your map this way, but it is certainly possible to have a small part of a biome in your chosen site without it showing before embark.

That would be wonderful. I'm still very confused. The world I generated has unusually shallow oceans (they are light blue!)
I never cared about oceans so there is a little chance I may be wrong, but I dont think they work that way. Light blue probably means they are good oceans, as opposed to evil.

Their physical skills are now capped. No more hitting enemies so hard that they fly over the map and explode upon impact.

But, come to think of it, I am not sure if they werent already capped in 40d17 or such.

Speaking as someone who played 40d a lot and took much time to move on, here are some things I found very important:
-Underground is different. Aside from new features, expect to have many more z-levels to dig in. Sometimes way, way too many, which is bad for fps. You may reduce the cavern number to 1 while still keeping all but one feature(curious underground structure).
-You will spend less time searching for good sites. I still remember the frustration of the impossible task of searching for a 2x2 embark with magma, running water, adamantine and chasm, heh. On the other hand you cant tell what kind of layer stone there will be.
-You may not like the way metals are handled. Nowadays, any part of a biome will look the same, mineral-wise. If a biome has hematite, it will have TONS of hematite, everywhere. Exploratory mining will be totally unnecessary, carving a single-colored rooms extremely unlikely.
-People may complain about military, but seriously, if you have been playing for so long you will do fine. It is not half as bad as they make it seem. Plus, you now have much more control.
-Burrows. The most important difference it made (for me) is increased ability of the player to murder specific dwarves. Pastures make it easy to murder specific pets of dwarves. Basically, you can kill anything you desire.
-Many of the nobles are now chosen by you. You lose the excuse for killing them, which may be sad for you.
-Migrants have now all sorts of skills, sometimes up to legendary. I find this annoying and depressing, you may too.
-No more superdwarves.
-Healthcare. Which is fine. Most of it is about dealing with diseases, which are a new thing too.
-Slower world generation. Medium region and 1050 years? Only if you are a masochist.

Last I played was basically right before DF2010.
Welcome... to the Third Dimension!

Study the wiki articles on construction/designation, making sure you understand things like how ramps, floors and walls interact. Learn how to farm in the new version (not hard) and you're already most of the way there. At that point, you can run a trial fort where you burrow the starting 7 into a hole, then wall it off (or raise the drawbridge) and ignore anything outside the hole entirely while farming crops and getting comfortable with mining and workshops again. (Walling off removes trade, migrants, and invasions from your list of things to worry about until you're ready.)

I strongly, strongly recommend reading the wiki. Even if you're consulting articles on 31.25, most of the information should be accurate, and there's a lot to learn (massive interface changes for one).
Right before 2010 we already had 3 dimensions. You kids these days...thinking how obsolete and stupid we are...but we know these things well...blah blah....my lawn....back from a nickel...

1000 years small world. I think that if you let the worldgen run overnight there is bound to be a vampire king. Once he gets to power there is little that can stop him. I dont see why that bodycount couldnt be in milions, provided you make a world old enough. (i dont remember if the age of the world is limited)

I am sorry if I am doing something wrong, but I just had to say how thrilled I am by the new stuff I see in legends.  Take Olon. Her whole life, she seemed to attract darkness and evil things, wandered the underworld, fought legendary characters and beasts, profaned a temple, became a vampire, killed hundreds, fled from place to place, then got turned into a night creature. Maybe if I had let the worldgen go on she would have become a werebeast too.
Or another frequently seen thing, a king of dwarves gets cursed to search for blood at nights. His true nature is revealed later, but being a king he gets away with it, changes the laws, becomes a dictator and rules a significant portion of the world with iron fist for centuries or milenia, safe and invincibe, like this superjerk:
