Dwarven economies are not about trade, comparative/absolute advantages and making things to be sold or used. It is about making shiny, precious things and putting them on a big shiny, precious pile for no real reason, then having it stolen by a dragon.

Related question, the seeds are no longer produced once there is 200 of them, can you lower this amount to something more reasonable? Like, 20?

You actually get yours to socialize with each other? Lucky bastard.

Even with my huge dining room and two statue gardens, I'm fairly certain the only people who have friends are members of the starting seven. And even that is only with other members of the starting seven. Everyone else just has a long list of passing acquaintances.

In Gorerape's ten years, I've had ONE party. Started by one of the starting seven who was friends with most of the other starting seven. Little bastards are too productive for their own good...

Well that's it. Number of friendships is a decreasing function of the size of a meeting area.

What would happen if you went on a lets say, 4x4 embark, made walls close to map edges, then filled the area with water, then abandoned, then used just_embark to embark on the middle 2x2?

This peculiar thing called drowning :O
[Unless you created a landing zone connected to the edge]
No, I mean, would the water flow away through the map edges?

So how is this going? I dont want to read 20 pages...

Would you mind waiting a year for a reply?
Yes. By the way, if there is a hidden reply in your post then I don't see it.

If possible, make him land on a cat or something.

dig.
digdigdig.
diggy diggy hole.

that is the long answer. the short one:
DIG MUTHAFUCKA!

no, seriosly, just dig out one large chunk at a time.

hopefully troll.

To answer OP's question, first look at your layer stones. Look them up on the wiki and see what they can contain. Then start designating explatory mining grids.
I dont sense a troll here.

Minerals are quite common (as of v0.31.01), reducing the need for extensive exploratory mining to find raw materials.
Seriously OP you won't get any better advice than digging straight down. Do it for each biome on your map, preferably at the center of 48x48 squares.

I'm still trying to tinker with the advanced worldgen, looking for The Perfect Embark:

Joyous Wilds meets Terrifying forest at a volcano with an aquifer. At least 15 z-levels of rock above the first wide-open cavern. And at least something good to forge with.

I have tried that like... a few years ago and I think I came to conclusion that volcano+aquifer is either impossible or ridiculously improbable.

By the way, I recently found out that changing mineral frequency and leaving everything else untouched produces a world that:
-has the same elevation, rivers, caverns, forests etc
-has the same LAYER stones
-has different minerals
-sometimes changes the good/neutral/evil aspect of a biome

So once you discover your volcano and aquifer you might want to try that

meh
I need a cliff right next to a lake, sand, either cassiterite+tetrahedrite or iron+flux+coal, trees, adamantine, non-freezing, non-scorching, with a large underground area that is just a white base stone without minerals to build living quarters in, and no more than 40 z-levels

Most of my DF-play consists of world generation :-(

Discovered a site where a brook spring starts in air and falls alongside a cliff into a lake.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
pretty nice i thought, but didnt want to start a thread just for that

Here's a tip: Since traps work on friendly monsters when unconscious, add a bridge to the entrance of your fort, connect it to the lever, and make a pit below it and fill in with traps. When you pull the lever while the traders are walking over the bridge, they will fall into the pit, and because they are unconscious due to the fall, they will get cage/hit by weapons/ whatever.

No, see he does not want to hurt them, he wants the opposite thing. I know, weird.

I have said it before: exploratory mining is an outdated thing. In the previous version, it was not uncommon for a 3x3 embark to only contain a few veins. But in 31.25, if your embark map has an ore, it will have tons of it.

To explain a bit more, for a newbie, your map might have more than one biome. Different biomes are likely to contain different materials, both on the surface and in depths. If you haven't found an ore in the chert by now, then there probably isn't any. To get an ore now you should try:
1.Digging deeper. Once you hit a different layer stone than chert, you might find some minerals in there. However, you probably won't find any iron, see above post about hematite.
2.Examining the surface. Maybe a part of your map has a different geological structure.
