I just hit the popcap of 100 dwarves, so maybe it would be feasible to dump everything and atomsmash it, but like I said, the likelihood of getting ambushed seems to be extremely high on this map.
Something I've noticed about the goblins -- they generally attack in the third month of every season. What I do is put a patrol out at that time, and they scour the map, taking out ambushers before they have a chance to attack caravans.

Also build some tables and chairs, and designate a room from one of the tables, and mark it as Meeting Hall. Then they will come and hang out.

The advantage that 12 has over 10 is that it is evenly divisible in more ways. Specifically, 12 = 3*2*2, and 10 = 5*2. So 12 can be quartered, or thirded, or halved or sixthed evenly, whereas 10 can only be halved and fifthed. So that's the cool part of a base-12 type system. 60 (as in the clock, or degrees of angle) is chief, being 5*3*2*2, and has many ways to subdivide.

The advantage that 10 has over 12 is that fractions and multiples of base ten are very easy to relate to.

Also, still raining.

The cans come in 12, 16, and 20 ounces. But 2 liter bottles (67.6 oz) are a better deal. I'm sipping on one now. Do your cans have mL sizes?

We use the imperial system, and we buy 2-liter bottles of pop.
And of course drug deals are metric.

On-Topic: It's raining.

VI.: What's Gnomeblight?
Can be bought in barrels, and I think it was part of an experiment with applying poisons to weapons, but the code was never finished, so it's a useless remnant. Several types of venom and liquid fire can be extracted or bought, but have no purpose.

Same thing with Golden Salve, which was supposed to work as a medicine but never got completed and is also a useless remnant.

dead units stay as deceased
Then the dwarf in question died.

Quote
would a dwarf killing [say tantruming?] another dwarf change them from the fort dwarf to a hostile?
Yes, there have been reports of that happening, and is called a loyalty cascade; the killer becomes an enemy of the fort, and someone kills him, BUT he was still a member of the civilization so the person who killed him becomes an enemy, and so on. I haven't seen it happen myself though, but I usually nip tantrums in the bud, before they have a chance to cause a bunch of damage.

Perhaps your brother should post the message he read. If he read a message. Seems more likely that someone died. Check unit list for deceased dwarves. Another possibility is "I swear I had another miner dwarf! Really! Oh, wait, that was in the last fort..."

Ice used to be mined and stored in Ice houses, which date back as far as 1700 BC.

Like a plate that would be triggered by bulls and cows, but not by calves?
Build a plate and customize it's trigger range. If the animals in question fall into two different weight categories, then the trap can be set to trigger on the heavy one, but let the light one through.

Seattle here, and we had a cold front push down from Alaska and drop about 6 inches/20cm last month. It lasted about a week, and then it warmed up again, and the rain washed it all away. Currently in the 40s-50s(5-10C).

Dwarves get disturbed by traffic, so having them path through eachothers bedrooms is not nice.  :-\
Looks super purdy though! :D
I think the group of three smaller and one larger that share an internal door is part of a four-room noble's suite, that includes bedroom, office, dining, and tomb.
