I'de like to try a fort that starts with only two dwarves, and not using any immigrants.

Question: How do I get the game to embark with two (preferably opposite sexed) dwarves?

I also feel this game has gone way past the level of "roguelikes" and would greatly benefit from a modern interface.
The biggest boost to graphics with the least amount of coding would be to fix it so that minimum screen resoultion can be 1x1. Once that's in place, the players can create large and beautiful tiles with maybe 48x48 icon sizes. Can pack a lot of art into a space that size.

My whine is the ppoor documentation on how the military squad - alert - schedule system works, along with a couple *DOH!* type moments that I am comfortable blaming the interface for. Some comments on the wiki lead me to believe that several squads -- and even individuals within a single squad -- can be given separate orders within a given alert. Like station Abe at North guardpost, George at South guardpost and have Herb the Archer defend the region. That's the kind of order I'de like to copy/paste.

Have you ever tried to make a squad and suddenly your squad leader is replaced by the incoming dwarf? It's a bug I tell ya. Interface Refinement.

Just putting the final touches on my main factory floor. Got slowed up because that last wave of goblins killed some of my good people -- they're on display in the zoo, for everyone to sneer at.

In order to search through my dwarves, I've come up with a naming convention that's been working pretty good for me.

Ordinary humble worker-bee type dwarves keep their randomly generated name
Soldier dwarves, which I need to be able to pick out of the list frequently, get names with one syllable. Dan, Frank, Kate, Steve, Claire
Nobles get names with two syllables. Daniel, Erik, Betty, Marcus
And 3+ syllables are for special people.

Then I can tell if someone important died from the last wave of aggressors, and who to replace :)

"Peaknights" This is a pigtail fiber left mitten. All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality. it is encircled with bands of pigtail fiber. It is made from pigtail fiber cloth.

Several of the posts in this thread have stated strong parental opinions on how a dwarf ought to be raised. The problem with expressing parenthood is that we wind up with public schools, where every parent has had their say, and the children are fed a thousand tiny insufficient morsals of Yous-Should-Learn-Dis-Too, interspersed with censored knowledge Cauze-Theyre-Not-Ready. The result: Well just look around :)

The ancient position of Centurion was a commander of a hundred men.

Supervising two hundred dwarves is a challenge, and to do it well is good exercise.
