yes. just lost a legendary bowyer to a yak. usually happens when they are hungry i think.
is you have nothing on embark, you will lose your dwarf to infection before you get a hospital set up. you don't need a hospital, but you will need cloth, buckets, soap, thread probably, plaster probably, traction bench likely, and if you get all that, i've never had a dwarf with spinal damage walk again. I did have a dwarf with feet claim all the food in the fortress which he couldn't eat because he was too injured, causing starvation and making all the dwarves swarm the caravan when it arrived, leading to massive casualties when a siege showed up. by the time the tantrum spiral and ensuing punishments were finished i had lost 50 dwarves. so you might want to leave him for dead if you don't have any food. or at least keep your eye on what food and drink he is claiming.

DF General Discussion / a warning...

I don't have any screens of this as it all happened so gradually that I didn't really notice what was going on until it was too late.
I had soldier who lost both feet early on. I kept seeing that he was cancelling eat orders due to injury but didn't think much of it, until all my dwarves were hunting vermin for food - turns out that he was claiming ALL the food but not eating it. By the time I managed to shut him in his room to starve (I don't have any execution chambers) the tantrum spiral had started. To make matters worse, and caravan showed up and all my dwarves ran outside to try to steal the food or something, and at that moment a siege showed up. Of course all the death made the tantrum spiral worse, and by the time all the goblins had been killed, tantruming dwarves punished, children who lost their parents died of insanity, and wounded dwarves who couldn't get cleaned died of infection I had lost over 50 dwarves.

The moral of story is to not let footless dwarves last that long!
