DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: finding dwarves with multiple bedrooms
« on: August 23, 2010, 06:56:35 pm »
Try confining the noble to a burrow with the correct bedroom?  Maybe give the bedroom multiple beds, so he'll still sleep there despite the worthless children mooching their Zs there.  Failing that: free up all the other beds.

I'm a big proponent of only legendaries or better getting a room, too.

So here's what I have: I got a magma pipe, bottomless pit, and chasm in close vicinity to each other, along with a not discovered yet underground river and I think an underground pool. I also have sand and a river. So, what crazy/stupid/etc. thing should I try to do with these resources?

And if you haven't guessed yet, I am playing 40d.

Make the chasm the entrance to your fort.  Turn it into a deathtrap-maze with clear glass everything.   Carve a spiral descending staircase into its sides, and build an unholy temple at the bottom of obsidian, a la The People of the Pit.  http://www.horrormasters.com/Text/a1833.pdf  Chain sapients along the downward path.  Bonus points if you can somehow trap clowns in the temple.

What do I win?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

:Edit: actually, come to think of it, my dwarves are ecstatic.  Grim for the humans though

That.  is.  awesome.

The fortress is badass, as well, but where did you find your icon pic?  :o

In my fort, I have, in order...

A steel left gauntlet via fey.
A silver left gauntlet via possession.  (Couldn't you at least have made a freakin' right one?!)
A stranger bone scepter that created a legendary bone carver.
A star sapphire cabinet/legendary gem setter!  :]
An aventurine ring...  at least I got a gem cutter to go with the other guy...
A magnetite amulet, via possession  >:[ and a platinum splint, via possession >>:[ and a
Magnetite coffer, which will make the dwarf I've designated to become baron very happy (he has very cheap/common tastes), if he lives long enough to be promoted.

Not a single dwarf has adopted one as a pet

They're marked as available in the animals screen right?

AFAIK only dwarves who like an animal will adopt it as a pet...  do you have anybody who likes "foxes for their [whatever]"?

I think the problem is that they're NOT objects--under k, they show up just as floor/ground.

Constructing and removing a floor gets rid of just about anything...  since these furrows aren't objects, hiding or garbage collection won't work.

Trampling might, but you'd have to test it.

I'll take The Rapists for 100, Trebeck?

In actual facepalming--locked random mooks and the military into various small spaces, due to walling-self-in/door-forbidding dumbness.

Thank god I noticed before everyone with any sort of fighting skills died.

That's the plan, but I only just got down past the aquifers to the first cavern level.

I'm thinking...  I don't remember, really, but I might've appointed him as leader of a squad that got disbanded--I know other dwarves have regained their senses after being un-drafted.

*double-checks personality*  Pretty normal as far as dwarfs go, and also it's actually a woman.

That's good to know about the armor, though--could be stockpile issues, or the regular troops grabbing all those masterwork shell gauntlets instead of lower-quality metal gear.  (I keep seeing a LOT of masterwork shell stuff on my militia...  thriving fishing industry + moody bonecarvers = giant piles of turtle/mussel/oyster shell junk.)

melomel likes tigermen for their ability to become the mayor, elephants for their bloodthirsty nature, and raccoons/macaques for their ability to deter/detect thieves.

Hate to rain on your parade here, but from the brief glimpse of the combat log you gave us in appears that the troll tore the mitten off his previous victim and was trying to use it to kill Tisrod, but Tisrod's clothes deflected it.  Your dwarf isn't invincible, the troll was just dumb.

MITTENS.

MITTENS.

MITTENS!!

melomel cancels forum post:  melomel has entered a flashback!
melomel has gone berserk!

Yeah, intelligent humanoid entities keep forsaking their deadly natural weapons in favor of trying to kill your dorfs with (pigtail glove)s via their untrained misc. object user skill.

This has happened to me a lot.  I mean, A LOT.  With werewolves.  God damned werewolves.  If they kill someone, they rip a glove or a sock or pants off, and insist on using it as an improvised weapon.

OMG!  KILLED DWARF!  WE MUST RECOVER ALL HIS BELONGINGS RIGHT NOW!

Well...  valid in Boatmurdered's era, but now all you have to do is "o-F-i" as soon as you embark.  (The o menu is the first thing you should access, IMHO.  Insert dirty joke here.)

You can't blame them for it any more now; it's your fault for not overriding their obsessive/compulsive nature and pathological greed/need to stockpile.

And it's not like d-b-? is that hard, either.  (I mean, once you find the wiki and drag yourself up the learning Cliffs of Insanity by the stumps of your raw and bleeding fingers.)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Questions about various things

1. How many dwarf migrants should be accepted before I seal off the passage to the outside world?

The question is not how many, but which.  If you are on a map with a volcano and sand everywhere, you do NOT want to exterminate that High Master Glassworker just because she's an immigrant.  Same with HM weaponsmiths/armorsmiths.

Legendary cheesemakers are a different story.

And while YMMV, sealing off the outside world is not necessarily the best thing to do.  You miss out on so much...  Fun.

2. How many z-levels can a "Basically unbreakable" dorf fall before taking damage?

There is no such thing as an unbreakable dorf.  If there was a dorf that could survive a 100 z-level plunge, he would probably die by tripping over a kitten corpse.

Quote
2.5. How many layers of cavern can collapse on the above dorf before he takes damage?

Generally speaking?  None, IIRC.  Some may heal fast with no lasting effects, but generally speaking, dwarves are not immune to the Rocks Fall, Everyone Dies effect.

3. If there is no way to get to your dorfs, will besieging enemies mine into your fortress?

In this version?  No, not unless I've missed a lot.  In fact, enemies without the ability to destroy buildings tend to be thwarted by a door that you tag "forbidden".

4. I really don't understand how the perpetual motion water pump/water wheel works. Help.

You got me there.  I don't know how to make one, either.

Quote
5. Would a fortress constructed entirely out of wood float on water without being attached to it?

No, alas.

Quote
6. Will a dorf with sufficient toughness and swimming be able to survive a dive into magma?

oh god no and how.

Before 2010?  Make the o_0 face; ignore it.  (Had one fort that breached the blue shiny 2 zs below the surface; that one died after the king showed up and went berserk due to the place being little more than a burrow in dirt.  You'd be surprised how much damage an enraged king can do.)

Now?  Nothing.  My forts tend to go horribly wrong before I even reach it.

Nice to know that unskilled miners don't destroy it, though.

He is, of course, NOT in the military and hasn't been since he became potentially very useful.  As one of the starting seven, he was probably drafted at one point to deal with a kobold/raccoon/whatever, but he's not in any of my existing squads.  This is the third time he's charged into battle...  going to try assigning him to the miner's squad (never activated, created solely to try and get my miners into high-quality leather armor).

Anyone else had this problem?  Also, has anyone else successfully gotten their civilians into basic protective gear via barracks-less squads told to wear light armor when off-duty?  >_<
