Unfortunately all Duchies are gone, you can start as a Count in the service of another Duke

Possible yes, sane? no. The thing is if we turn over the entire kingdom you'd find between 1 and 3 Magic Users, out of which maybe one has any idea what hes doing. If we look throughout the Thousand Kingdoms it would be in the high hundreds with maybe ten or twenty at what would commonly be proper mage level (as in they can regularly cast spell without blowing themselves and everyone around them up) and a single person who would reach something like archmage level.

The vast majority of what you would be hunting is poor old women who sell herbal remedies. And of the Mages most are secretive people of wealth and power, since the necessary things to properly learn magic require books which are hard and expensive to come by. So you would be dealing with angry, Mage-Nobles.

Lacie

Marcellus looked back, a manic, triumphant grin plastered on his gaunt, starvation haunted face

"Why you ask? Because the Blood of Royalty is worth more than that of goats. And why settle for one if you can have two for the price of one?"

With a speed belying his gaunt figure, he headbutted one of the guards and kicked the other, his bindings coming undone, he revealed a stiletto hidden up his sleeve.

before Lacie can react he rams the stiletto into his own heart. His knees giving way to his weight, he looks up at the spymaster and despite the blood in his mouth his voice rings clear as a bell.

"The True King Rises!" and with that ends the life of Marcellus No-Name.

@Micelus: Well having you control all of the bakeries and (i suppose with it millers and farmers) would be a bit too much but i'm willing to give you a monopoly in a single duchy, if you are fien with that go right ahead and start posting.

@Atian: Several Things. First and most importantly I'd like to keep the Mountain Tribes NPC for now, later in the game they may become available but i'd like them to stay vague until the interior of the kingdom has been done and a cultural baseline established. Secondly: To the north are no tribes, while indeed the land is too poor for agriculture it is home indeed to some remaining kingdoms, who are living in a feudal system. Third: what exactly do you want to do with your raider character within the kingdom? I mean a random bandit is one thing, an entire tribe moving down from the mountains to burn down villages and towns an entirely different one, at least in terms of scale and level of threat.
If you want to play an antagonistic character that is perfectly fine by me by the way, but, i would prefer for all antagonists to wait for a while till the kingdom is established proper and things have gotten sorted.

Okay then. A Description of Yshuis is out, i hope i didnt make it sound to miserable :P

Ardas you are accepted i will write up a bit about the Arnmarch next.

and since Kansa posted his/her app i think we need some more clarifications about magic:

Magic is not a gift one is born with. Everyone could potentially cast magic, it is something that has to be deliberately sought ought and claimed. It requires much study and with it pacts with certain beings, or the possession of certain artifacts to allow a mortal human to cast magic.

In short, you need to possess the means or the sheer will to get your hands on things which allow you to even get into magic.

Otherwise your character would have been fine. So throw in some changes and you are good to go. Your character could have started studying it under that spymaster for example if you really want a mage spymaster.

Also so we don't get flooded by mages (considering we have 3 Nobles and 3 Potential Mages at the moment) i will cap the number of existing mages at any given time to 1.

Yshuis: The North

If one were to travel west along the fertile farmlands of the Argr eventually one would come across one of its many tributaries, the Ys. Barely able to afford some riverine trade it leads into one of the poorest regions of the kingdom, Yshuis. Argas not being a wealthy, large or important kingdom to begin with, should tell one everything that needs to be known about this decrepit region. Still, Yshuis endures and endures well all things considered. Bordered to its West and North by mountains it forms the Northern Frontier of the Kingdom. Passes leading further north lead into lands too poor for regular agriculture.

The Capital of the Duchy forms Kouhald, less a city and more an overgrown castle, it forms one of the first lines of defense of the kingdom against raiding tribes from the mountains. But even a castle as strong as Kouhald will not protect from the darkness of the long nights and the grim weather they carry with them.

I've decided to post a description of the various duchies and regions of the kingdom as they come up so we know what we are talking about and where things are situated. Also to give a feel of the regions.

Idea is good but runs into some problems. Magic, again, is rare, so Mage Guilds are not really a thing since the number of people mad enough to practice it are a) far and few inbetween and b) because its so bloody dangerous mages are by and large distrusted and disliked by everyone.

Think 16th Century Witch Hunts, only with a good reason for them. So while a court mage is certainly possible, prepare for general fear, disgust and hate and a general public relations disaster for whoever decides to employ you. On the other hand if you manage to somehow convince people differently, then you are made.

@Rockeater: You could play a thrill-seeking mage if you really want to. The problem is, thrill here means suicidal rituals which summon things from the depths of whatever godforsaken underworld exists making pacts with them and/or trying to dominate them. If you fail pretty much the mildest thing that can happen is crippling injury. the worst is a full blown End of the World Scenario.

Generally mages make for interesting sidestories or new plots, but fact of the matter is, that if you survive beyond your first spell you are already ridiculously lucky. Alternatively you could spend in-game decades on studying and gathering magical knowledge and tomes to ensure that you actually know what you are doing. The latter route of course bears immense powers beyond mortal ken. With the caveat of decades of studying and constant threat of demonic possession.

In general magic is something that exists but is rather rare and most of its practitioners are barely scratching the surface of what can be done.

tl;dr: Dark Souls only unfair.

If you want to start with that as the plot go right ahead.

@NUKE: if there is blanks to be filled out you can go ahead, but King has first dibs on developing the background of the Kingdom (note the Kingdom not the world at large).

Mostly i'd prefer if you discussed some additions to the world at large with me at first just in case i have already something prepared storywise that would conflict with it.

Last Argument of Kings

Behold the Capital of the High Kingdom of Argas. Or what remains of it. For the Fortified Town of Arg Caís is a mirror of the state of its kingdom. Decrepit and rundown, it looms over the Plianth Sea like an overgrown gargoyle, something that should have been abandoned to ruin long ago. And yet here it stands defiant and bustling.

For the Argr brings agriculture and trade. Stretching almost across a mile at its mouth, the Argr is the lifeline across much of what once what was Argas. But here at its culmination the riverine trade and the farmlands hugging close to its fertile floodlands ensure the survival of those who would still cling to the dream of a Thousand King.

It is here in the High Hall of Arg Caís that Tristan first of his name, of the line of Saleon has ascended his throne.
