The first few waves are generated based on the amount of wealth you produce, the rest seem to be generated relative to the amount of wealth you exported recently. So, yeah, you need to sell some of your goods. Put a stockpile for your trade goods right next to the trade depot so it will be a shorter trip for your haulers, and temporarily disable other labors on your broker when the caravan shows up.

Supports holding up a section of otherwise unsupported flooring works well too. They knock down the support and get crushed. :D

Milking seems like it would work better if the dwarfs brought the bucket to the creature, rather than trying to bring a chained or caged creature to the workshop for milking.

I'm playing a fort on .12, no baron yet, though I may have missed the offer. Those screens always seem to come up right as I'm doing something else, so I end up hitting a key to select an object and instead close the conversation screen.

In 40d they seemed to have at least 2 different flavors of text, the one when the game thought you had behaved according to the elves' wishes, they had nicer text and did not impose a tree quota.

what happens is that obsidian is just not being listed in the "economic stone" menu. If it is a layer in your starting location, it will be allowed for construction (green), if it is not a layer, it won't be allowed (red). Since it is not listed, you cannot switch between these two states. To allow obsidian to be listed, you have to remove its "max edge" tag from the raws. You can add it back after switching, and the game will remember its "cannot use" status.

Dwarf Fortress is actually part of a government mind-control program. As you play more and more you slip into a trance, then they come for you! They hook you up to a Matrix-like machine, only instead of harvesting power or some BS, they are running Dwarf Fortress ON YOUR BRAIN! The goal? So the government can run their game of Dwarf Fortress faster, obviously. 8)

Thanks folks, glad you like it. :)  I wasn't sure where I was going with it at first but it's coming along nicely.

How do you think I should "top it off" ?

Post an example pic if you come across one, I found lots of neat ideas on google images searching for "office building"  But I am interested to hear your suggestions.

Ok I had to cut 5 wood for a mood, underground wood but it still counted against my quota. I turned the unused wood into bolts, so no wood in any stockpiles anywhere and 5 out of 106 cut. Elf liaison still complained about our massive woodcutting industry and required me to limit my wholesale slaughter to 120 trees next year. I did buy a bunch of wood from the caravans and turned it into things like ash and bolts. I'll try not buying any caravan wood next. But for someone who is bending over backwards to reign in the wood use, these elves are still awfully pissy... :D

It's the first level of the caverns. :) Also, Invaders are turned off. Hehe.

I'm not trading them wood, and I'm not even cutting underground trees from my tree farm or the caverns. I was only a little curious at first but now I am testing it hardcore. :D This year I have 0 wood in my stockpiles and no wood cut all year, and spring is about to arrive, if that doesn't work next year I won't buy or cut any wood at all, then see what they say. I can trade with them fine, they just demand tree limits.

I'm at 106/106 this year, last year I hadn't cut a tree, same for the year before that. They still call me butcher and demand limits to my massive deforestation. I did have some wood in my stockpile, I'm doing my best to empty it out now before the elves arrive to see if that makes a difference.
