Other Games / Re: Steam and Windows Live is a load of shit.
« on: July 11, 2010, 04:51:40 pm »
I've had good luck with Steam as long as it is not a new release. If it's a new release, their bandwidth curls up and dies. After a few days things are OK though.

If I avoid Steam and buy the boxed copy instead I run into a different problem. It seems every time I buy a boxed game, the DRM keeps me from playing, or the game's required update server is down or slow and I can't play for a few days anyway.

So for me the choice is Steam except new releases, or boxed games that I won't be able to play for a few days because their DRM throws a hissy fit or the update server is bogged down and updates are required to play.

Every time I think about playing something besides Dwarf Fortress, I end up remembering the trouble I have with retail games.

Windows Live is a steaming cow pattie though. :D

Vorpal bunnies!

Badass, and the enemy still has the embarrassment of dying to a bunny.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Spiral3 Fortress Layout

Do you have the quickfort for this?

Unfortunately not, I've been designating it by hand. I haven't actually used any of the macros or anything before...

It looks complicated but it's 5 shift-squares, 3 of them overlapping, with some bits cut off. :D

I'll see about making a macro thingy for it.

Edit: Okay, how do I make macros? :D  Edit2: Oops thought you meant the internal recording thing. I see Quickfort uses CSV's, those are easy enough.

I tried square rooms before, in fact I ended up noticing I was using pretty much all square designs, so I thought I would try something different. When I first started on this layout, I had the large rooms as diamond-shaped, but realized if a workshop had blocking tiles on the side that went against the edge, that a dwarf might get stuck in the corner after building the workshop. So that's why those rooms look a bit odd. :D

I was hoping the split design and rounded rooms would reduce pathfinding costs. Feel free to experiment though and let me know if you have good results with different room shapes.

Katyrnyn, I'd love to see a screenshot of your layout. :)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Spiral3 Fortress Layout

My third spiral design. #2 was too big, lead to degradation in FPS after a while.  Rotate 90 degrees clockwise each level down.  The large areas are rounded workshop rooms, hopefully the smaller size will help keep pathfinding costs lower.

Other than FPS, the primary advantages of this layout are that, depending on the rotation and state of designation or digging, you can imagine it as a heart, a smiley face, a pair of breasts, a pair of testes, or the International Space Station. Your own personal preferences may come into play too, for example, I see the ISS with a pair of breasts, but maybe that's TMI. :D

The "solar panels" are bedrooms or small workshop rooms, and the "breasts" are large workshop and stockpile areas. You could make each level a burrow with a small food and drink stockpile if you wanted, too. As you can see, I've made this level a cloth-related level. The stockpile is actually one big stockpile, then with notches cut out for the empty area, and small notches cut out around the dyer's shop for a dye stockpile. The bedrooms on this level haven't been decorated yet.

As you can see, I have a strange mood going on here. Let's hope it turns out well, and produces an actual good artifact, this fort has had precious few of those so far.  Edit: Got a pig tail left glove... :( Worth 25k. :)

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Reclaim Scragglers

Shun! SHUN! SHUUUUUUUUU-UUUUUUUUUN-A.

(I've never used magma in anything but magma forges/furnaces and for obsidian manufacturing.)

Real answer: The first round of serious invaders should wipe them all out. Or start a new fort.

I'd like to see the oldest bugs fixed first. Persistent bugs bug me the most. :D

I would love the arsenal dwarf if it weren't for the bugs. Same with the building destroyer liasons, I wouldn't have minded them if they actually completed the meetings. If they completed the meetings but destroyed a bunch of stuff in the process, it would have been hilarious to have them arrive.

"HOLY ARMOK the Uber Demon Cow is back!" "Oh nos! Okay, Urist, you start building tables, and Urist, you start building chairs. Urist, I'd like you to work on replacement doors. And Urist, can you please clean up the damage this thing is going to do? K, Thx." :)

I still remember the well-dressed demonic cow... thing.. that showed up at my first v31 fort. I imagined her as a well-meaning but clumsily huge creature, oversized for the dwarven constructions and unaware of her own strength. "Um, excuse me." *knocks on the stone door, shattering it off it's hinges* "Ooops... Um, I just wanted to discuss trade negotiations..." *sits on the stone chair breaking even it's well constructed form.  "Oh no!" *turns to look, her huge tail shattering the table as the broker stares, wide-eyed. "Why does this keep happening to me? Why does everything around me break?"

I thought of a waterlock entry way design after seeing a decorative waterfall shove a grown dwarf through a fortification.  Basically a tunnel with fortifications at the end and floor grates just after that to let the water drain away. Set a meeting area at the end of the tunnel, when migrants you want to let in show up, turn on the water to push them into the fort.

Divide by zero should be a special case that floods the map with magma. :D

I love the graphic for that one. :)  I can't think of any good achievements yet, when I get some, I'll post them.

Edit: Got one!

And by "donation" you mean "bribe," right? Interestiiiiinnggggg... Perhaps we can corrupt the Toad...

Hey Toady, I'll give you a hundred bucks if you implement my sand idea. (not really)

Now I understand why lobbying is so popular.

I'll chip in $100 for the sand thing. For reals. (I've paid more for less.)

Toady deserves tons and tons of credit for not being overly attached to it.

QFT. Way too many devs fall too in love with some ideas to give them the axe when they don't work out.

We already know every other game developer on the entire planet envies DF for it's gameplay, maybe they can follow the other ways in which DF leads, too. :)

The Administrator is very concerned that we get a conclusive analysis from today's sample. I gather I went to some lengths to obtain it.
