Ah yes, but as has already been stated, we could keep them alive out of water in those glass cages, have them adopted, then re-submerge. Turns out all sharks have an alright pet value, so it MUST be possible.

Now if there was a lava creature that couldn't lave the lava, then doing this with them would be OVERWHELMINGLY AWESOME!! but as it is I don't think there are any, as fire imps, fire snakes, firemen and lavamen can all walk on dry land. Unless I missed something.

So fish can survive a short time before drowning. I believe that by use of micro management we could have a hauler with a few legendary skills, therefor giving him awesome agility, and so he can run further before the fish dies. Tie this with building the right rooms close together and fish moving might become less of a problem.

Well, Ze, I found that option that forbids dwarves from going outside, so I make use of this function during a siege, and let the dead be collected after the goblins have gone away or are dead. For a while that was only half effective, until I channeled the roof of my entrance to make my traps count as being outside.

It works for me!

So how do I dig up towards to water without flooding the room and killing the miner inside? Or is that the kind of job assigned to peasants...

You know, this reminds me of playing Dungeon keeper 2. Digging underground, the not total control of creatures-just tell them what to do, and the fact that I can't get disco inferno out of my head.

BURN! BABY BURN!

We can do that? AWESOME! Set out the fish traps, have the miners start digging, and somebody get me a barrel of dwarven rum!

As I'm having trouble catching fish off shore, I'm thinking of another largish project to set traps in the middle of the ocean and reclaim them, but I'm left to wonder, do traps and floodgates survive being dropped from large heights? Or do they die on impact...

Well I shall be more careful then this Boatmurdered guy, I will put coal out at random strategic locations to ensure maximum burnage! Combine this with the annual woodcutting, hunting and plant gathering festival and I think we have a winner!

Well when I tried drafting a hunter into a marksdwarf and shoot the fish to death, they didn't seem to be able to do much, and as he was at competent level, it should be hard for anything to kill them.

That raises an interesting point. If fish can drag in near by targets then a bridge that is three tiles wide should allow most intruders to get dragged to a fishy death.

For any of you that stalk me, you should know by now that my attempts to catch ocean sharks isn't doing very well. The terrain was hostile before, but now a fire imp burnt down the entire landscape, and I think that was the cause of death of a horse of mine (Was killed by heat, not struck down).

But we must carry on, FOR FISH!

I wonder if there is a real life application by taking hippies and drafting them into the military.

So what your saying is that the main advantage to there being a fire is that I won't get another fire in a while...Sort of redundant, but gives me an idea for THE MOST AWESOME TRAP OF ALL TIME!!! People like to brag about there cute little lava traps, I think setting the entire landscape on fire would be more effective.

Nope, the trees are all well and good, but you can guess I was surprised to see what had become of all my green grass! Must have been a fire imp then as there is a visible lava vent here. I will have to remember that can happen and watch out for it next time I embark at a similar location.

Is there any downside to a burnt waste land? Or does it just make my hunters easier to notice on the gray ground.

DF Gameplay Questions / Whats with the ash?
« on: March 25, 2010, 06:41:58 am »
Hi all!
So today I started at a new location, great one in the middle of the forest with everything a dwarf could wish for. I start digging into the earth and get production up. After a while things are going great, but after making so many bins and barrels I start running low on wood.

So I head to the surface, and suddenly my entire forest has turned to ash! Must have been some sort of fire (Shame I wasn't above ground to see it!) and I'm left wondering how? All my dwarves were below ground so couldn't have done anything, and I don't think there is any environment with ash as a seasonal change.
