DF Suggestions / Re: Secondary weapons.
« on: May 14, 2010, 04:22:10 pm »
Oooh!  Another idear...

Again, this should likely wait until the stuff I mentioned in my previous post, but something commonly used in warfare through the ages was projectile entry weapons quickly switched out/discarded for other weapons when distances closed.

Examples include slings (used for many centuries by the Spanish and Moors during the Reconquista!), throwing stakes (examples I remember are from the Philippines), throwing axes (the Franks and various cultures), rocks (everywhere), pilums (Romans), spears, etc.  Many of these were as useful in duels as they were in large pitched battles.  I can point people to sources if you want!  Interesting stooof.

I debated with myself to add this to one of my replys. I don't think that dwarves can actually throw things in fortress mode. They can fire projectiles but I've never seen anything thrown.

Also the thought that demons would come from the "heavens" is rather...foolish if anything gods would shoot meteors at you filled with weapons telling you to kill all the demons you just released from hell by greedily mining out the metal of the gods, its would be a boon and a bane, the boon would be a large cache of masterwork weapons made of metal compareable to adamantium the bane would be that your probably going to have dwarves die from the impact of the thing...

First of all, who says that meteorites are sent by the gods.
Second, even if they are, who says they're your gods.

Please goto the "legends" section of any world you've generated and read "deitys"

First, I don't see a deities section in Legends mode.  But looking through historical figures shows plenty of non-dwarven gods.
Second, you missed my points entirely.  You're saying people are foolish for suggesting that the gods would send demons down in meteors, but you're the one who's saying that gods are actually sending meteors down.  And my second point was that even if gods are sending the meteors down, it's not necessarily your gods who are sending them down.

Well considering Armok is the "god" of the dwarves and he created them greedily, why would he not assist them, I am aware there are more then dwarven gods, we can assume the gods are in the polar opposite location of the center of the planet where they locked away all the demons. I guess all gods locked them away so why wouldn't the gods help lock them up again, it doesn't nesscuarly have to be from Armok. There isn't a diety section I meant to just look for dietys. I wouldn't imagine there would be demons where there is supposedly "gods" so how could they send a meteor down full of them when they have none up there in the first place.

The chance of an iron meteorite, or even any meteorite hitting the world in a period of 1000-10,000 years seems pretty small though, if you're going for realism.

Well I think there would be a difference from a "chance" meteor and a event meteor one could happen absolutly randomly like a volcanoe erruption and another would probably be from a god telling you to slay something or other...

I always thought that if you assigned a chest to a dwarf they would store their coins in that chest.

The metal in asteroid from the asteroid would be to finite to make a significant difference, and considering that such an occurance would be probably more rare then witnessing a volcanoe errupt in a plain while playing fortress mode I doubt that having that metal would be a problem also considering how hard it is to work such metals I also don't think it would be possible to work iridium with wooden tools at all...you'd probably need platnuim, steel or adamantine to even mine into the space rock.

They retrieve the spear if possible (or are at least supposed to). Not so much for a dwarf that pulls out his backup.

Well why wouldn't the dwarf retrieve the spear if it is designated as his
primary weapon. I could understand if your trying to say
in the midst of a battle a speardwarf that pulls out his
secondary won't get his spear back but if he was just killing a lone thief he wouldn't
walk off if the spear happened to of gotten stuck in the said thief.

It can swim though. You could replace the entire outside of the magma pit with glass, and keep it as a pet.
That would be interesting to do, but I don't think that colossi have magma vision so they can't path out of a pit can they?

Bronze colossi have extravision.

I didn't know that  ???
Well I'll keep that in mind, well maybe not a lava filled pit how about just a
old fashioned pit since I'm positive they can't climb, fly or levitate.

I wouldn't worry about it as long as they kill said enemy then you can recover the spear anyways.

Which just makes them glorified swordsmen.

Well Pilsu, this is realy only the case for weapons that get stuck in enemys commonly. If a marksdwarf kept a Short sword with him so he could use it in close quarters that would make him a glorified marksdwarf but I'd rather have a glorified marksdwarf then a dead marksdwarf. Also I don't understand why you wouldn't want hoplite dwarves anyways, Greeks hoplites had a secondary shorts sword whenever their spear got stuck in an enemy or broke, besides I like the idea of a dwarven hoplite, it seems interesting.

How do you keep spearmen from drawing their backup every time the spear gets stuck?

DF Suggestions / Re: New room: Museum
« on: May 13, 2010, 02:46:56 pm »
Well what if the museums were used as a meeting room, and if you have many high value items in the room liasons will pay extra for your trade items, and you could ask for discounts on specific things you are in need of as well. The room could also double as an area for creating good thoughts, but the fact a party could be thrown in a room like that I wouldn't call that room a museum I'd call it something more dwarfvenly like...Grand Hall...

Then of course in the museum then you would have a purpose for a manequin that could wear and display said artifacts.

DF Suggestions / Re: Boats.
« on: May 13, 2010, 02:41:09 pm »
As I sit and watch my plan to use the underground caverns as giant dumps for my waterfalls, my mind painted a picture in my head of building a boat, and sending dwarves down there to scull about in a boat, gliding past a silent world of muddy walls and floating corpses, batmen house debris, and the general detritus of destruction, I realized that I wanted boats. Because boats would be awesome. and awesome is what Dwarf Fortress is all about.

Please read the topic guidelines, it says to preform a search on topics before posting about them, if you search "boats" (without quotations) you will get 7 threads directly addressing and asking for the addition of boats and 4 pages of threads with boats included in their topic as part of their original post.

Do you know that evil oceans are brown with red spots?

Edit:

Yes I do, well I've never seen such a tile in the current set I use. I've seen MANY deserts but I use the phoebeos tile set so I might not actually be seeing it. But will adding exposed lava actually increase the evilness of those ocean tiles, I had no idea that you could do that, I understand artifical island making though, except there wont be anything to mine and no way to trade unless I construct a large bridge from the bones of elves and from Elven highwood.
