how to irrigate farms without flooding the fort. Even tried flooding a 2x2 area with pond water and draining it.
Unless you're not on soil, you don't have to irrigate to farm anymore. That irrigation age ended at around version .18 or so.

But I am not trying to stop you from doing exciting flooding experiments with your fortress at all! Go on and keep flooding them. ;)

I really prefer to apply the battle axes and magma to puppies, but then again, I adore cats for their aloofness... so there ya go.

Yes, I'd just place a coffin somewhere, set it to "allow burial" by pressing q-b over it, and watch if they won't assign the coffin to that dead dwarf.

Jugs filled with the jelly or honey which are stored in bins are not inaccessable for your cook. The problem is that your food stockpiles are usually closer to the kitchen than the finished goods stockpiles, and so the cook will rather use whatever you have in the nearby food stockpile. Once he has finished this stuff, he won't move on to the honey and the jelly, because he's lacking a solid component now.

To fix this, I would suggest that you place the stockpile for the jugs extremely close to the kitchen, closer than the raw food stockpile is. That will make your cook use the honey and the jelly at the highest priority.

Sounds like another rumour. How about ordering them to do some milking/cheesemaking or send the buckets to the Trade Depot? That should get them emptied for sure.

But yes, lye making is annoying. My issue with it is that I have a permanent bucket brigade up and running to cast some ice, and they didn't hesitate to seize the buckets that were just filled with fresh lye, too.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: A Better Magma Pump Stack
« on: May 29, 2011, 04:10:10 am »
Just a thought, temperatures can be turned off, less calculations euqals less fps... so you only have the drop from flow....  just my theory...
If you turn off the temperatures, nobody gets burned to death by the magma anymore, and your carefully designed setup for the freezing water + magma trap for the caravans won't work anymore. Also, your painstakingly designed, executed, smoothed and engraved outer wall, which consists of ice, will melt.

The information about the entirely artificial cisterns is a false rumor.

In my case, I've dug a tunnel leading down a couple of z-levels from my saltwater aquifer; at the bottom, I installed a depressurizer (it has to flow diagonally), then I pump it into a 2 z-level deep cistern.

None of the walls involved is constructed except the floor tiles (I don't want any trees to grow there). I smoothed these natural walls though, because I think they look better that way.

The water past the pump is completely clean and desalinated.

Anway, don't worry about the water being salty. Just install a well and the dwarves will use that as the water source anyway.

Yep, these happen quite often as well. About 1-2 per 1-3 worlds, I'd estimate. (Both with streams and with brooks, by the way).

I embarked on one with 3 sources once (3 sources are more common than just 2, in my experience), but then I wasn't really hit by any sort of inspiration for the map and left it again.

The "source" for streams and rivers are brooks.  It's not rare to find a brook source.
I realize that. However, all of the sources I found were *stream* sources, not brooks. They aren't rare at all, really; I found them also just as quickly on less warm worlds than the one I investigated so closely.

... and there's another one on the same pocket island. This time in a red sand desert. Doesn't look like they're really that excitingly rare - or do you think that my pocket island is abnormal?

... another one in a temperate Savannah.
... and another one.
... another one in a Grassland
... another one in another Savannah.
... one more in a Rocky Wasteland
.. make that two more in Rocky Wastelands.
... the human town seems to sit on another one.

Alright, this Pocket Island seems to be a bit warmer than your default parameters. Still, that's plenty of sources of streams. There are even more for brooks, before you're asking.

What makes you say that these are rare? If there's a stream, then there has to be a source for it at one end.

It just took me about 20 seconds to find one on a freshly created pocket island. *find stream* -> *follow stream* -> there it is.

Has anyone weaponized the outdoor temperature? You could probably embark somewhere where attackers die of hypo- or hyperthermia.
Yes, but I actually used it mostly against immigrants, diplomats and caravans. It was a combination of scorching air and rainfall, like in the good old 31.01 days. Became a bit boring though, and anyway, the game kept pulling a new diplomat and caravan out of its arse every year.

Lead is a wonderful material for large pots, especially those that are destined to hold liquids.

Yes, you need windmills or waterwheels for a pump stack.

However, if your pumpstack is only 2 z-levels high, then you can as well do it with manual labour. Enable the pump operator job on several of your lazy dwarves and let them do it.

Here's what my current graveyard/catacombs looks like.... nothing too fancy:
This is a very neat design. I approve of this. :)
