DF Gameplay Questions / Forgot Item During Embark - Cheat
« on: September 03, 2014, 02:45:33 pm »
I've been playing Dwarf Fortress for six years and not once in that entire time have I even considered cheating. Until now that is. After an eight month hiatus from the game, my first embark went perfectly. The site is just ... gorgeous. It might be the most aesthetically pleasing embark site that I've ever had. Unfortunately, I forgot something during my embark, an axe. I know, it's ridiculous that I'd forget something like that, but I did. I considered abandoning the site and reclaiming it, but I absolutely hate doing that. Unless things have changed, it moves your items all over the place, screws up the caverns, and generally just makes a mess of things.

Now I could just restart and move to a different, not beautiful and amazing site. Or I could somehow slip a copper battle axe into the game somehow. Does anyone know how to do this?

Also, does anyone know if Reclaim has been changed significantly enough that it doesn't screw up the caverns and leave your items sprinkled over the map?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Outside Forts
« on: February 28, 2013, 02:22:02 pm »
So I just started up a new game of Dwarf Fortress after being away for a year or two. The first thing that I noticed was that my muscle memory was still top notch for all of the commands; odd how that is. But the thing that brought me back to playing, besides the fact that it's an awesome game, is that I wanted to do an outside fort.

What I mean by this is that all workshops, barracks, homes, and every other thing are all outside in little buildings. There are taverns, messhalls, throne rooms, and the like all set up as a human city would be. The only things that are below ground are storage areas and farms.

Has anyone else ever tried this?

Can wheelbarrows be used to haul water to muddy stone or fill a well?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Naming Squads
« on: June 02, 2011, 09:05:35 pm »
I've always wondered why there's no way to name the military squads when you can name your dwarves and fortress.  Am I simply blind to some obvious way to name the squads or is there really no option?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / New Release Date?
« on: May 15, 2011, 09:52:02 pm »
Has any information been released about when the next update will be uploaded?  My current fortress is getting a tad bit old, so I'm thinking about starting a new one. However, I'd prefer to wait for the next release if it's going to be any time soon.

Thanks.

DF Gameplay Questions / Armor Not Registering
« on: September 05, 2010, 01:14:04 am »
I have a small military of 9 dwarves.  Or, rather, I should say that I had a small military of 9 dwarves and now have a sad bunch of cripples who know how to use weapons.  My dwarven army was clad in exceptional steel armor with exceptional steel weapons and yet they have all suffered grievous injuries.  Five goblins with copper weapons were able to cut off a hand off of three different dwarves, cut off a leg, and gouge out an eye.  Now, I'm willing to understand the eye, but why is it that the copper weapons are able to penetrate the steel armor so readily?  Further, when I read the reports it always says, "The goblin... slashed... through the cloak or vest or cap."  Why doesn't it say "through the steel breastplate or steel gauntlet?  Are my dwarves bugged or am I simply having ridiculously bad luck?

Just for reference, all of my dwarves are equipped with steel breastplates, mail shirts, helms, gauntlets, high boots, greaves, shields, and weapons.  Any advice?

Thank you.

DF Gameplay Questions / Innocent Prisoners Starving to Death
« on: August 28, 2010, 02:07:25 pm »
I have a rather nice prison.  There are around 40 silver cages set into alcoves and a 4x4 drink and a 4x4 prepared food stockpile attached to it.  I have 15+ dwarves who haul and have feed prisoner/patient set as their only jobs.  Why is it then, that my legendary Smelter, who didn't fulfill a mandate for slade items, starved to death in my prison?  Is there any way to make sure that they feed him?  Is this a bug?

Any advice would be appreciated.

DF Gameplay Questions / Hospital Stockpile
« on: August 06, 2010, 04:25:10 pm »
I've recently created a hospital with a heft number of chests in it for the dwarves to store things in.  Unfortunately, they don't seem to be abiding by the limit that I set for each item.  So, it looks like my hospital is going to have 1,000,000 bandages, but no crutches or splints, even though cloth is set at 140,000 and crutches and splints are both set at 10.

Any suggestions?

DF Gameplay Questions / Mac and Backspace
« on: July 29, 2010, 05:14:30 pm »
Every time I hit my backspace key -- delete key on the mac -- a triangle comes up on the text string instead.  I've searched the forums and found comments related to it along with statements approaching "Paste:
[BIND:STRING_A000:REPEAT_SLOW]
[SYM:0:Backspace]
[SYM:0:Delete]
into your interface.txt and it will work!"  But it doesn't.  Little triangles are populating all of my dwarves' names and I find it quite irritating. Could someone please explain to me exactly what I should do?

Thank you.

DF Gameplay Questions / 4x4 Embark Smaller?
« on: July 28, 2010, 11:35:33 am »
I took a two-month hiatus from Dwarf Fortress and recently started up a game yesterday.  The first thing that I noticed is that the normal 4x4 area that I choose at the beginning seemed smaller than it used to once I embarked.  Is that just my memory being weird or has Toady made the areas smaller?

DF Gameplay Questions / Farming in Caverns
« on: May 26, 2010, 09:23:44 am »
So, I wanted to spice things up a bit by embarking in the tundra. So far, so good, I planned on simply tunneling down until I found a cavern with muddy soil on which I could start a farm.  I eventually found a nice cavern with an almost perfect area for farming, so far, so good.

Unfortunately, the game doesn't seem to want to let me farm in my fancy new cavern.  There are no creatures around to scare away my dwarves, but my dwarves simply refuse to do certain jobs in the cavern.  An example is, the mason refused to set up a mason's workshop, but was more than happy to build constructed walls, in the cavern.  A more pertinent one is, my farmer was more than happy to construct farms in the cavern, but refuses to plant anything.  And it's not so much "refuses to ..." but he doesn't even acknowledge the fact that I'm asking him to farm.

Does anyone have any idea why this could be?

DF Gameplay Questions / Fortress and Royal Guard Question
« on: May 20, 2010, 01:37:40 pm »
In the previous version you assigned dwarves in your military directly to the fortress and royal guard, but in the new version you seem to assign them under the Captain of the Guard, yes?  I have two main questions:
Do you still give them orders like you do any other military squad?
Will they go about dispensing justice by default or must they be activated?

I couldn't find the answers for these questions in the forum or in the wiki, but maybe I was looking in the wrong place.  Thanks for all of the help.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The Rationale for Bronze and Iron
« on: May 13, 2010, 02:45:48 pm »
It's my understanding that Bronze is now better than Iron for weapons and armor.  Now, I've come to love Dwarf Fortress for its quirks, but it usually makes sense when it comes to things like this.  I know that pure Iron crystals are rather soft, but pure iron is a rather uncommon find in nature.  Bronze being a better choice for weapons and armor when dwarves obviously have the know-how to make good iron weapons, since they know how to smelt steel and adamantine, simply doesn't make sense to me.

Can anyone explain the rationale for this please?

DF Gameplay Questions / Intelligent Training?
« on: May 06, 2010, 10:48:09 pm »
Up until now, I've had my dwarven soldiers training with training weapons.  To do this, I told them to equip Training <Weapon Type>.  I've recently had a dwarf go on a rampage punching dogs and civilians alike and to deal with him I sent my dwarven soldiers to kill him.  Unfortunately, I forgot to tell them to equip real weapons so they pummeled him for quite some time with their training weapons.  My question is, if I tell my dwarves to equip Battle Axes, will they also equip Training Battle Axes for when they're sparring?  Or do I need to have them equip both Battle Axes and Training Battle Axes and they'll intelligently switch between the two?  Or must I go about forbidding/claiming weapons based on what each dwarf should be using?

DF Gameplay Questions / Training War Animals
« on: May 06, 2010, 03:10:35 pm »
I have about a dozen stray dogs wandering around my fortress and I'd like to put them to good use.  Thinking that having a dozen war dogs would be a better way of using them than having a dozen dog meat meals I decided to build a Kennel.  Luckily, a migrant came in with the Animal Training skill so I thought that I was going to soon be having war dogs patrolling every nook and cranny of my fortress.  Unfortunately, the game doesn't seem to want me to have war dogs, or hunting dogs for that matter.  Whenever I go to the Kennel and say Train War Animal, the game says "<name> cancels Train War Animal: no creature."  I went to the Animals section and made some Available and some Unavailable, but that still didn't fix the problem.

Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?
