DF General Discussion / Underwater Fortress (Need some advice)
« on: April 07, 2010, 10:19:39 pm »
So yesterday I got this crazy idea that I wanted a fortress completely submerged into water. I'm still building the layout and after my fortress is done I'm going to channel a huge hole about 15 / 20 levels deep around my fortress, and finally channel a river to the hole. I had to go through so many bugs and had to conquer a cave or two but everything is going according to plan.

Now, I'm wondering about water pressure since I want wells inside my fortress. Just how high would my wells have to be (relative to the river) so I don't have to worry about flooding my fortress?

I'm also wondering if I have long before I get sieged by goblins since I've never had a siege before.. but I did heard that if I don't completely close off my fortress, this would mean that I have lost.. and I can't afford that after all the effort I've put through. Right now though I have seen no sign of any kobolds or goblins yet, only giant rats, troglodytes and buzzards.

And lastly, I'm having a extremely hard time trading with the elves since they never have anything insteresting and even though I try to GIVE them stuff for free, they don't even want it. Will not trading with them eventually start a war?

That looks awesome. Now make more!! *whips*

..no just kidding.. It looks great though, can't wait to see the rest.

It sounds like a bug and I'm not sure what you mean by "it's own law-giver demon" (I don't play adventure mode enough) but if it's really a demon I'm pretty sure it can unleash some kind of curse before it dies no?

I find it playable, but a bit annoying for these reasons:

* Vermin not rotting
* Some minor path-finding issues

That aside I enjoyed working on my fortress, I've played much more buggy games.

DF Suggestions / My wishlist
« on: April 05, 2010, 11:20:16 pm »
These are just a couple of suggestions of what I would like to see in the future.

Dwarf Fortress Mode:
--------------------
* Choosing what materials to use while using Workshops.
ex: If I would want let's say, a door of the color of stone I want.

* Immigration Office.
ex: I've been thinking about this one for a while now, and after seeing some other people suggest it I though it would be a good idea. Just like a Trade Depot you could build it and immigrants would make a pit stop and stay there for a season. Sending a immigration noble (or something I dunno  :P) you could choose witch immigrants you want in your fortress and witch ones you want to send packing. This could have a certain impact on your fortress.

* Pastures.
ex: This could be a zone that works like meeting places only for animals you'd want there.

Adventurer Mode:
-----------------
*Dungeons/Crypts.
ex: Or other locations of the like really, something more fun than just go through caves all the time.

*Joining a City.
ex: I always kinda wanted to join a city as a worker. You could spend let's say a season helping the town with some work (automated or not) and this could make you some money to start out and maybe raise your fame..

EDIT:
Ah! Almost forgot this one

Dwarf Fortress Mode:
--------------------
* Other Races Migrants.
ex: I'd want these to be rare to very rare, but would be fun to see a elf or human sitting at your door wanting to work for you. Other races could gain more experience in some area and not be able to work in other (such as elves could not mine but could gain alot of experience in wood / clothing related jobs).

* Milking cows!
* The ability to send squads attack something.
* Colorful stones/woods a-plenty.

DF General Discussion / Re: Bins? (DF2010)
« on: April 05, 2010, 10:00:56 am »
No luck.. however this bug might only be with some wood types seeing as my bins are made from some white-ish looking wood.. I would test further but with the lack of wood in my area I'll have to wait for another shipment of wood.

They don't seem to be working for me, I have a bunch of empty bins cluttering my furniture stockrooms.  :-\
Is anyone else having this problem?

Of course! How could I have forgotten to bring a couple of dismembered parts of my ancestors.  :P
But your probably right.. I hardly prepared for this journey, not to mention the lack of trees here.. but I'm holding strong.

I'd hardly call it luck. I can't get all those materials at the begining of the map and I feel like it's a waste of perfectly good artifacts and dwarves.

I'm having the same problem, at first I was carefully picking my migrants labor and naming them. But eventually I got so many of them in one go that I just didn't care anymore. I had well over 30 dwarves and I was still just digging my first floor and I don't need that many at the start of the game.

Maybe I'm just unlucky lately but I've been getting about 2 fey moods per years starting as soon as the first.
So here's the scenario: I'm building some rooms for my dwarves ect ect and then BAM a dwarf is possessed and takes over a workshop asking me screaming for rocks, wood, body parts and whatnot.. of course I can't provide all the materials, then he goes mad and I have to put him down.. thus my dwarves all get a big boost of unhappiness and some spiral in a frenzy of tantrum. This was fine the first few times but now it's just getting my dwarves really depressed.

As anyone noticed this or am I just crazy?
