If people want to do inferior armour at the start and then upgrade to steel at a later date, they need to get used to the existing workaround for the multi-equipment holding bug. You don't tell dwarves to dump their equipment. You completely erase the entire squad they're in, make a new squad where the uniform is "don't wear anything at all, ever", wait for them to strip, then erase that squad too and make a fresh new squad with the good stuff (and only the good stuff) as their uniform.

Personally I don't see why it takes so long to get steel gear within the first season but we all have different play styles so I understand there is a need for this. Once Toady is satisfied the whole system is working as intended we can get it into players' heads that the arsenal dwarf (whether he's a physical dwarf or a virtual one in small pop forts) doesn't like having his toes trodden on by players ordering equipment to be dumped in an attempt to de-equip. That's a 40d habit and game doesn't like it anymore.

I did not know this, excellent! Its like a giant one-use piston pump. This will be particularly useful for making an early start with the magma forges.
Personally I get my magma forges set up within 1st season of embark (including anti-magma-life measures), foregoing building/digging out anything else beyond the bare essentials. But the beauty of this method is that you don't have to worry about pesky magma-life annoying you later. Whatever magma men or imps were down there, they're dead and you just get the magma filtered free of hostiles.

Try embarking near a volcano next time and wonder at the sheer lack of iron.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Useless Migrants!
« on: June 22, 2010, 09:16:31 am »
I'm industry-oriented. There is no such thing as a useless migrant or "too many dwarves" in my book - aside from the nagging problem of FPS death. Even before I started using Dwarf Therapist, I made a "Drone" job with 30 labours switched on. There is always something more I could be producing or decorating (I've tried memorising the gem value table), always something else to haul off or clean up, always more livestock to pen and milk, always more pearlash to prepare. Once military gets fixed further, there will be even greater demand for population as I'll be wanting lots of squads too - the logistics of supplying them all with gear isn't a daunting task for me when I'm used to so much production.

Mind, all my forts inevitably die to FPS death because of this playstyle and I have to create another fort within 6 years. I really should learn to just focus my efforts on a few industries instead of everything possible.

This is the main reason that makes me wonder why people like embarking on volcanos in DF2010 (where magma is guaranteed anyway), as unless you overengineer the worldgen params, you won't get sedimentary rock near volcanos. Limonite appears in a few select igneous rocks but it's really sedimentary rocks you want for a blooming steel industry, even if you have to dig down into the crust to get your magma.

Outstanding piece of dwarven research, commendations!

It's down to what people want from DF. For me, I just switch INVADERS:OFF and I don't have to worry about any military bugs. I just have my bunch of steel-only axedwarves and as I never change equipment or squad members, they never have problems gearing up and doing individual weapon drills. If I wanted to focus on fighting sieges, I'd go to the raws and removed all ranged weapons from the civilisations so everybody must melee (makes it fair since we can't use marksdwarves).

I do notice a lot of players want dwarves to be swapping equipment after an initial set for whatever reason, especially 40d players thinking they need wooden training weapons equipped during peacetime. Until formal group training is fixed, there is no need to ever have them swap equipment. I get steel out within the first season from embark and I start cranking out steel everything with no compromise on the raw materials. Dwarves then deal with upgrading to better quality steel weapons on their own - that's the job of the arsenal dwarf.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: I miss chasms so much...
« on: June 22, 2010, 08:37:11 am »
Once in DF2010 I did run across the message for "hey there's a chasm here". But they don't actively show up anymore and it's just considered unnecessary if all you want is a large spawning point for monsters. You can make those spawning locations yourself as you've already pointed out.

Hospitals need boxes built to store the stuff, if you haven't already, try building a wooden chest or stone coffer on the hospital zone. Also, try turning auto loom off in "o"rders, your loom might be stealing it all before the hospital can.

I already have 4 chests and 2 bags in the hospital, shouldn't that be enough. And I don't have any loom.
How big is that hospital? I once went for 30 chests/bags and only then was I satisfied the hospital was properly stocked. Said hospital had maybe 10 beds and 1 traction bench, plus a built-in well.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: sword spear or axe?
« on: June 22, 2010, 08:30:02 am »
In the current DF2010 builds, it's axes all the way. Everything else is filler. There's a lot of complaints at how there's no room for variety if you want efficiency in your army. Expect things to change in the future but for now, AXES.

Yes, sometimes they're specifically looking for silk instead of cloth. Also, are you sure the clothier wanted cloth not thread?

4. I accidentally built some up/down stairs off by one square. So removed the old stairs and put a floor down not thinking that I really wanted a wall there instead and then constructed some stairs in the spot that I wanted. Now I can't build a door because the opening is 3 spaces wide, and I can't build a wall on the middle constructed floor space because something already exists there. Is there a way to fix that?

5. What's the best thing to do with gems? Currently I just take all of them and cut them and and encrust furniture.

6. How do I assign sand to a special stockpile? Do I just need to create a custom stockpile and select all the types of sand under the stone- blocks section and nothing else, and then deselect them in all my other stockpiles? I've done that and the bags don't seem to be put there. Is it because the sand is in bags?

As always, thanks for the help! My wife hates this game now.
4) Deconstruct that floor, then build the wall.

5) Well what do you want from your fort? Gem windows or fabulous wealth or excellent exports?

6) Furniture stockpile. Notice there's a "sand bag" filter at the bottom right of the screen.

Is that vial carried by a soldier? Soldiers might be using vials as flasks to put drinks in.

Is there any way I can force my cooks to butcher an animal corpse as soon as possible? I killed a ton of Elk Birds, and I want those corpses butchered before they rot.
Are those corpses in a refuse stockpile? They'll only be butchered once they're in a pile first. Then just disable all other labours on your butchers and build more butcher shops if need be with more butcher dwarves.

That square-root sign is the game trying to draw a tick with ASCII. I presume it means that equipment slot has been 'ticked off' - as in, approved. Doesn't mean they've actually got it now, just that the arsenal dwarf has done the bureaucrasy to approve of them getting a piece of equipment for that slot. I think they only get approval if there's something to wear at all.
