I recovered my old walkthrough from the WaybackMachine.

Some of y'all probably have more accurate information on the quests now.

=== [0x00] INTRODUCTION ===

The official Iron Seed website was at http://www.ironseed.com/ - although now you will probably have to use some other method to find the game and its latest patches.

As of the last time I checked, the latest patch was v1.20.0014-2007-03-01 - although it is uncertain where any of the patches are now.

The easiest way to run the game is through DOSBox, which can be found at http://www.dosbox.com/

=== [1x00] HINTS & TIPS ===

[1x01] BEGINNING

The ship with only 4 weapon slots is actually the best one overall. Even though weapon slots are hard to improve, you don't need maxed weapons until much later in the game. Thrust and fuel capacity are much more important in the early stages.

Choose crew members with good sanity or good all-around stats. A lot of the early game consists of repetitive grunt work, which will put a lot of stress on your crew.

Use multiple save slots. Save every time you travel or get a new star log. You never know when you might get into a battle you can't handle, or when you cause a plot-related bug.

[1x02] ECONOMICS

Scan planets fully - i.e., until all your probes are docked again and you get the full planet info. This is the only acceptable level of scanning for most things in the game.

You can use Astrogation to repeatedly travel to the same star that you are currently in. This is best used for refilling the caches produced by your bots in order to get easy resources.

Once your crew gets strong enough to do research without building up stress, set them all to do research. Then, go to the options menu and set the Time Slice to 1. Leave your computer on overnight and your crew will be at around level 20. Alternatively, if you have a powerful computer and are running the game through DOSBox, you can set the cycles to an extremely high number like 30,000 or 40,000, and your crew will reach level 20 within a few hours.

[1x03] COMBAT

In order to do well in combat, you first need Ochre Embryons, then as much thrust as your ship can handle. For shields, you don't need anything more than a Reflective Hull with Quarter Shields. The best defense is a good long-range sniping offense with the Ochre Embryons. Later in the game, you may also want to try out the Kyn-Pox Ichors in order to take out larger ships.

Successfully running far away from your enemies (roughly 1,200,000 kilometers) in the middle of combat will cause the enemy ships to self-destruct. You will win the battle and be able to scavenge for parts. This is a good way to get lots of free parts from the Scavengers and the Sengzhac.

If you get tired of practicing combat with drones, the Sengzhac are pretty good targets too. Simply go to their home planet, talk to them, and mention some keyword like "bye" or "fluids" to provoke them.

[1x04] STORY

Don't kill Aard or Phaedor Moch ships. You will need them for the storyline later. If one of them keeps on following you, go to the Security panel and choose to Retreat.

Don't go to Yned (1.9, 127.1, 88.1) more than once! You'll run into an infinite amount of Scavenger stacks! Eventually, they'll wear you down and kill you.

Once you get the quest to find the Icon, don't even bother trying to figure out where they are unless you really enjoy scanning planets. Otherwise, just spoil yourself here.

If you ever get stuck, try starting a new game and redoing the quests in the "correct" sequence. You'll get a good idea of what the "correct" sequence is after getting enough star logs.

=== [2x00] WALKTHROUGH ===

This walkthrough is intended to be used in conjunction with the "important places" section. For example, I might say something like "find the Thermal Plating." This means searching the "important places" section to find out which system has the Thermal Plating in it, or you can try to find it the fun way.

[2x01] IN SEARCH OF THE ICON

Scan the planet.

Go to the next system that you are able to.

Talk to all of the major races (Aard, D'pahk, Ermigen, Guild, Phaedor Moch, Quai Pa'Loi, Scavengers, Sengzhac, Titarian, Void Dwellers) at least once. The Aard, Phaedor and Scavengers have no homeworld to talk to, so you may have to explore around to find one of their ships.

Look for the Malzatoir and the Icon Data Buoy. I think they were in Sigonib.

Now, talk to the Icon at their home of Hadekou. You want the ship log "Reformation of the Kendar Alliance" to be safe.

[2x02] REFORMATION OF THE KENDAR ALLIANCE

Now it's nonlinear quest time (I think there might be a certain order to do the quests in)

Get the Ermigen to join:
- I think you have to repair their ship first?

Get the D'Pahk to join:
- Find the Thermal Plating
- Decompose the Thermal Plating
- Talk to the D'Pahk until they give you the Thaumaturge

Get the Titarian to join:
- Find the shunt drive
- Decompose the Shunt Drive
- Talk to the Titarian until they join

Get the Sengzhac to join:
- Go to Dubofang and find the Temple of Iron
- Find the Detonator. It might be given by the Sengzhac themselves, or you might have to find it through other quests, or at Deol?
- Go to Dubofang again to receive the Iron Seed
- Talk to the Sengzhac until they give you the Doom Gate

Get the Guild to join:
- Find the Ylinth Genes
- Talk to the Guild until you get the star log "Guild tell you how and where to defeat Derraak"
- Find the Homing Device, which I think is bundled with some other quests? Possibly the Iron Temple quest?
- Go to Fabexi and clean out the system. Derraak might steal the shunt drive in the meanwhile, but you'll get it back when you catch him at Fabexi.

Get the Quai Pa'Loi to join:
- Talk to the Quai until you get the ship log "Quai go to war"
- Talk to the Guild until they tell you that the Moch have the Goolas
- Talk to the Phaedor to get the Goolas
- Talk to the Quai, they should join the Kendar now

Get the Aard to join:
- I don't know if you have to repair their ship first?
- I don't know if they can join before or after the Ermigen are destroyed

[2x03] DEFEATING THE SCOURGE

Eventually, the Icon will tell you "They have killed again..." Go to Mytuk and get the Data Tapes. (I don't know if it's safe to decompose the tapes or not.)

Experience a supernova at Tyr.

Look for the Hallifax Maneuver.

Go to Papesia.

Talk to the Guild to find out how to beat the Scavengers? It seems like a star log was originally meant to go here, but was not put in the game.

Go to God's Eye and win the first battle. If there is a second battle, you have not yet finished all the possible quests and should quit the game and reload.

Congratulations, you have beaten the game!

With the button now green press shift-F1. This will bring up a screen showing all possible crew choices and their starting stats. The list is unsorted and ungrouped. The stats are MEN/PHY/EMO (mental, physical, emotional).

Easter Egg 2
Press alt-1 on the main screen. You will see the portraits of the game authors.

Easter Egg 3
Press control-F10 on the main screen. This will bring up a simple juke box which allows you to change the default music

Easter Egg 4

Make sure you press escape before each click.

This willl bring up a cheat screen. It allows you to add a dirk, a reflective hull, an unknown component or an unknown material to your cargo. It will only add an item to your cargo only if you don't already have one yet.

hint: Installed weapons and shields don't count as cargo.
hint: What an unknown component or material is can be determined by clicking on it in disassembly mode in the creation screen.

Creative Projects / Unmapped 2 - a Darklands-like party RPG
« on: July 16, 2013, 11:41:13 pm »
This will be a rewrite of a previous project: http://code.google.com/p/unmapped/

You control a party of up to six characters, adventuring through the land and eventually saving the world. There is no graphical map of any kind, hence the name "Unmapped", although there is still a lot of room for randomness in many other areas. The game will never show you the numbers in the underlying system, so you have to figure out which encounters are difficult and which ones are easy all by yourself. And, whether an encounter is helpful or dangerous can also be random, e.g. if you meet a blind musician then she may either give you something or murder the party horribly.

The interface will be a standard windowed one, although mostly text and buttons and menus. There is a possibility for character portraits, music, and other such things, although this depends on a webhost that can handle lots of ~500MB files.

One comment I got on Unmapped 1 was that the main plot wasn't revealed immediately, so, here's a story:

Story

There is a recurring pattern: a rough bearded prophet in the wilderness calls for equality and pacifism, but is brutally repressed. The survivors become more extreme and turn to violence, and are therefore eradicated in an even more cruel manner. Such uprisings grew exponentially with the printing press. One of the biggest examples was the Cult of Soult, which was contained by a siege for ten years, all the meanwhile turning to strange practices like polygamy and child marriage.

The great foreign powers saw an opportunity to divide and conquer the land, but of course they eventually started fighting each other directly. Some of them claimed to protect the Mono-Temple, others gave refuge to the New Prophets, but they were all basically the same in the end. Even the great foreign powers themselves were felled, giving rise to new atheist princes who systematically burned holy books and religious leaders at the stake. The princes believed that if there were no more religion, then nobody would have anything to fight about anymore. Once they had successfully cleansed all major cities, they turned on each other.

By the time the wars were over, over half the population was dead and at least a quarter of the land was scorched. Roving marauders and mercenaries scraped a living as best as they could, with a few settling down on burned land to try to make right what had gone wrong. Many villagers tried to continue on as best as they could, trying to get back to the normal farm life, but they found the scars of war everywhere they went. Refugees flooded the great foreign cities, especially Saint-Frank.

The worst is yet to come. The corruptions of the true faith, the loss of religion, and especially the destruction of holy books translated to the vernacular has greatly weakened the boundaries between Hell and the World. There is an evil power in Hell, named Lightbringer, that seeks to make all living things serve it, and to drain all happiness and love from the world. Only Lightbringer will be happy, while everything else will be in darkness. It believes that it is the most beautiful and worthy thing that has ever existed, and everything else is inferior to it. It feels no empathy - if it were to see millions of people eviscerated before its very eyes, it would not care. However, if it were to suffer even the slightest scratch, it would become hysterically-emotional and exact revenge thirteenfold.

Lightbringer has sent four powerful servants to scout out the world and prepare it for imminent conquest:
- Akuma-sama the mighty - a vicious cannibal who lusts for blood
- Baphomet the corrupter - the twisted goat-snake-man who desires to devour souls
- Lillith the seductive - who takes the desires of men and turns them towards destructive ends
- Samael the oblivion - lonely and afraid, but also projecting death and disease all around the world

3
This game has given me a sudden urge to make home-made beef jerky.

Also - is it just me, or should fires be started with as little material as possible, and your stacks of 1000 pieces of firewood should be pushed in afterwards?

Hardcore Terraria
- Crafting requires the parts to be laid out in a specific pattern, just like Minecraft
- You have to build fires, cook food, and stay in buildings just to keep from freezing to death, like Unreal World
- The corruption can permanently turn you into a zombie

Casual Metal Gear
- When you sneak up behind guards, you just need to press the melee button, and you will automatically go into a mini-cutscene in which you dispatch the guard
- Automatically lock-on to enemies
- The storyline is greatly simplified to be more patriotic and easy-to-understand

Hardcore Dwarf Fortress
- Dwarves can get alcohol poisoning, and therefore need clean drinking water to survive
- Dwarves also need sewage systems, or else they will get very dirty and infected
- Dwarves try to kill each other all the time if they're not well-guarded

Casual Hotline Miami
- Enemies and their bullets travel very slowly
- The protagonist can take about 100 hits before dying, and regenerates health
- You can carry 20 weapons at a time, and plenty of ammo for each

Hey, you asked to say anything if the batch file spits out some errors, so... ummm... here:

That means you gotta update to the latest version of Java.

Unfortunately, I currently don't have the resources to test multiple versions of Java. And I'm holding out to buy those resources until Intel Haswell comes out.

Creative Projects / Unmapped - a plain text Darklands-like RPG

http://code.google.com/p/unmapped/

----

You gather around the comfortable fire at the tavern, in a remote town where adventure is to be found.

"Then we are agreed?" asks Roswitha, a priestess who has decided to go out of the sheltered cloister and into the big wide world. "We will swear this pact of loyalty, to achieve justice and glory for all?" Everyone nods.

You all swear a pact as blood-brethren, to seek good and avoid evil, and to bring everlasting honor and glory to your names.

You look around at each other. One of you, Zeni, is a battle-scarred veteran who has seen the full horrors of what humans are willing to do to each other. "Now taht we have a goal," Zeni remarks wryly, "how shall we achieve it?"

"Let's visit the market and the guilds in search of better equipment and more training," suggests Sugihara. She has studied and scribed for her whole life, and loathes risk. Above all, she fears that someone will accuse her of making a mistake. "I've also heard that the churches and monasteries may take on students. Once we find some teachers, we can just stay here and work at various things until the money runs low!"

Everyone nods, even Rory the Rascal. "A wise plan," remarks Rory, "but why not take action now? Lowlives infest the back streets here at night. We can gain repute, experience, and a bit of plunder by eliminating these scum. Let us also listen to rumors and visit the villages to learn about opportunities to advance ourselves."

There is an unhappy look on Sugihara's face. "Don't we need fine armor and good weapons? Maybe the sale of one or two valuable items would give us the funds to help everyone here. I am loathe to venture into the dangerous countryside without good equipment."

After discussing these issues, you decide to...

...look at the downloads
...ask the tavernkeeper about his younger days of adventuring
...consult the scholars who are also experts in dwarven craftsmanship
...converse with other adventurers who have tried many kinds of quests
...enjoy the ambient music at this tavern
...search for more choices
...discuss unrelated topics to pass the time

----

Unmapped is a Darklands-like "role-playing" game with a minimal pure-text interface, powered by the Lanterna GUI library ( http://code.google.com/p/lanterna/ ). The combat is based on The Bard's Tale series. The game has no visual map whatsoever, hence its name.

It requires Java to run. If you can run PCGen, MegaMek, MekHQ, etc., then you should hopefully be able to run this.

Current things to see:
  * Party of up to 6 characters
  * Go to the Guild Street or the Garment District for shopping
  * Go to the temple at the Central Plaza
  * Go to the slums and pick a fight
  * Go outside town and explore the countryside, visit a village, or march towards a raubritter's (robber-knight's) tower
  * Holy Book system, roughly analagous to the Roman Catholic saints systems of Darklands
  * Source code available under the GPLv2 on Google Code - if there is enough demand then I may also put the source on GitHub

New in 0.0.8:
  * Random encounters in the countryside - currently, only two are implemented
  * Main menu is accessible from outside town
  * There is now a benefit to going to villages that are not evil
  * Running away from a fight will remove shock damage ("stumbled", "staggered", "totally rocked", etc). Also, shock damage is also always removed while camping/resting, even if the character does not choose to rest.
  * Bugfixed savegames so that they will keep track of character damage

Planned:
  * Training non-combat skills - the really good training will require Norton Coins
  * More encounters of many kinds
  * More possible encounters when picking a fight in the slums
  * Ranged weapons with reload time - crossbows and firearms
  * Other encounters & battles that show off the engine's flexibility, e.g. skeletons who are highly resistant to cutting & piercing damage
  * More shops and stuff to go in the shops
  * Improvements to chargen
  * Alchemy (and Cooking / Food system?)
  * Ask for music submissions
  * Implement save files as JSON rather than XML, for maximum resume padding
  * Finish up the quests that are started in villages

Shelved for later:
  * Character descriptions - This is not gonna work without a lot of custom coding, because Lanterna UI doesn't have text input boxes that handle multiple lines.

===How to help?===

Suggestions and feedback!

What takes most of the time is thinking of encounters and all the different things that should be able to happen in them.

===Java is infamous for security issues===

This only applies to the plugins that run Java in a web browser. This affects nVidia's hardware detector, Facebook's advanced photo uploader, and many corporate applets. However, desktop and server Java are still fine. In fact, if desktop and server-side Java had a security issue, the whole corporate world and the entire country of India would melt, but that is another story for another day.

And, if you heard that Java was bad, wait'll you see Flash and Silverlight. Generally, web browser plugins that provide "rich functionality" are inherent security issues.

If you're really concerned, then use Linux + this: http://openjdk.java.net/ or this: http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/java/jdk/index.html - and turn off the Java web browser plugin

===Exception in thread "main" java.lang.UnsupportedClassVersionError===

Try updating to the latest version of Java.

===This game is difficult!===

Look in the source code for a file named "spoilers.txt" to see some of the secrets of the game. Or you can just hack your save file.
