That makes this game rather simple for a KOEI strategy game. In that case, seconding the plan to make a fast grab for Lyle's gem.

Wow Lankshire is getting strong

Let's try to form an anti-Lankshire coalition, it will come in handy after we absorb Lyle.

See if an alliance with the powers to the south of Lyle will work. If we can hold onto even one extra province, we'll be doing better than the "historical" result

Oh yeah, which faction does Fantasy Bloody Mary belong to? Because Fantasy Bloody Mary is way hotter than the real one.

Which factions are the equivalent of Scotland, Wales, Ireland, and/or Oliver Cromwell? Because playing as fantasy Oliver Cromwell and winning would be neat.

Thanks to the existence of UFO: Alien Invasion, OpenXcom, UFO: The Two Sides, Xenonauts, and the UFO: Extraterrestrials series, it should hopefully become bloody obvious to the world what the true spirit of X-COM is.

But that could also be hopeless optimism.

I wrote an old strategy guide a long time ago at http://ironseed.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=671

The game itself is inconsistent about what it is really about - is it a hard sci-fi struggle for survival, where you wait thousands of years just to farm the materials to get your ship in working order? Is it typical alliance-versus-evil-empire?

The way the dialogue & quest system worked didn't help much.

Name+Profile pic: The Perfectly Ordinary Person - http://sanfrancisco.grubstreet.com/questionmark%20face.gif
Gender: insignificant
Preferred Equipment: Whatever that has a combination of inaccuracy and lethality against friendly forces
Bio: You might think that there is something to this person. But he or she is, in fact, a perfectly ordinary person.

Name: John Stalvern
Age/Gender/Race/whatever: Male Human
Bio: His father told him that if he went into the deep sea, he would be "kill by demons." He didn't listen, even though this is highly likely to happen in TFTD. So here he is, signing up for X-COM.
Preferred Weapons: Anything whose purpose is to blow open walls and floors

For Adventurer reclaimers/explorers:

It is raining, but at least that washes the blood off of your body. You see the site in the distance... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtLWUkAqQBM

As you get closer, you find that some of the evil creatures still remain... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_Ejjyj3mQc

While doing something similar, I once got swapped into an olm. This bug probably is glacier-related.

"In the lands of the south, your dreams can be made true... In the frost lands of the south, the aurora borealis fills the sky with magical energy. I once journeyed there, to reflect on the beauty of nature. After many long nights of fishing, I just laid and let the dreams come as they may while enjoying the smoke of an aged glumprong branch. I dreamt that I was a giant, hundreds of times more voluminous than any mortal... but I am rambling again. The oceans of ice contain much magical wisdom, waiting for you to come and partake."

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: What is your fighting style?
« on: January 20, 2011, 02:51:05 am »
When fighting bogeymen or other hordes, I do things the easy way: move into them, let the auto-attack do its thing, then dance in and out of combat to do crowd control. Eventually all the enemies will either bleed to death or move slowly enough that I can brutally kill them all.

When fighting quest monsters, I do a self-imposed challenge and try to stick to moves that would be practical in real life. That means kicking an opponent's left leg with my adventurer's right leg, punching opponents in the face, doing kicks to the body if the opportunity presents itself, or if I am lucky enough to have a pointy weapon, repeatedly stabbing the opponent in the upper and lower body until he/she/it can barely move anymore. If I'm feeling really flashy, I'll do spinning kicks to the legs (e.g. kicking an opponent's left leg with my own left leg), or even kicks and punches to the body. In particular, body blows seem to help a lot with mundane creatures like humans, dwarves and elves. (did I mention that I'm thinking of modding the game so that elbows and knees can be used for striking?)

Wrestling is too funky right now so I never do it. If it ever gets a better interface then I'm sure I'll be doing fancy chokes, like anaconda chokes and guillotines, to my opponents soon enough.

My ultimate show of contempt to a foe is to simply punch him in the face. Adventurers generally get so strong that they can jam the skull through the brain anyhow.

If I've got an axe or some other weapon that works best when slashing, then I focus entirely on the lower body and whichever limb is easy to hit. If the enemy's guts pop out, I always try to sever them, just because Dwarf Fortress is awesome like that.

On the very rare occasion that my adventurers meet challenges they cannot defeat, they can usually still outrun them. I just pick up rocks and stuff and throw them for massive damage. It's almost like cheating, as many of you know, but hey, it works.

Weapon size is very important for determining the maximum wound that can be inflicted by cutting or piercing. I'll need to do some more experiments to determine how long of a weapon you need to be able to hack up a Bronze Colossus. Also, need to experiment to see if weapon weight is based entirely on its size and material, or if the MATERIAL_SIZE has any effect.

EDIT: For bludgeoning weapons, the mass of the weapon is what's most important. It also helps somewhat if the weapon's impact area is smaller rather than larger, so that the force is more focused. Naturally, it's best to just pick up a giant's corpse or something, if you are able to, and beat things around with it.

EDIT: The problem with a small cutting edge / piercing edge is that it will not cause very much blood loss, disembowelment or mutilation of limbs. So, you have to make a tradeoff between the length of the cutting edge and the chance that you will pierce skin/armor.

Took on a Cyclops. He got lucky and shoulder-charged me against the wall. It all went downhill from there.
