In the Arena, I created one grand-master bronze colossus decked out with Adamantite gear (including an adamantite longsword), and an unskilled bronze colossus. The grand-master one was able to hack off the hands and feet of the unskilled one, but... never made any other kind of progress whatsoever.
Maybe you need at least a two-handed weapon that's better than bronze to do it?
