Impress the Big Man with your mad dancing skillz, then ask for a promotion to supreme corporate overlord.

What's the point of all these types of stone? What's the point of all these kinds of animal?
The different stones and animals have unique properties, and provide a lot of variety. I'm sure there will be a use for these grass types, it's just hard to imagine what it will be.

...Except the evil grass which will probably be something like this.

I'm totally going to bring this up next time I try to get someone into DF.

"Sorry, I just can't get past those ASCII graphics."
"But it has 18 types of graaaaaaaasssss!!"

That having been said, what exactly does this mean? What makes "evil" grass evil? What's the point of all these types of grass? I'm curious.

The True Meaning of Dwarfmas
Heh, I remember that thread, but I never saw St. Othlo before somehow. :D
Still, I thought I'd share my version. By the way:

On the third day of Dorfmas a True Dorf gave to me:
Three kittens burning
Two Carp-a-slaying
and a wafer of adamantine!

There didn't seem to be much to that article. It just spends a few paragraphs assuring the viewer that while DF may be "ugly" (compared to other ASCII games, or what?) it's really fun... but it doesn't go into much detail about anything. Then it just ends by linking someone else's video.

The video itself, on the other hand...

As for booze, there was a barrel.

The dwarves lazing around seemed un-DF like.
I liked "gone" the best.
Though the creature was pretty darn cool too.
Well,

"Gone" just depressed me...

DF General Discussion / Merry Dorfmas!
« on: December 23, 2010, 11:36:20 pm »
Every year on the 25th of Moonstone, all the Dwarves gather 'round the great Dorfmas tree and celebrate every Dwarf's favorite holiday: Dorfmas! Dorfmas is a holiday in remembrance of the great Emperor Sankis, bastard son of Armok who was stripped of his beard and burned for the sins of Boatmurdered and all of Dwarven-kind. May his charred bones be dug up and made into a masterpiece totem rest in peace. Each year, around the time of this celebration, Dwarven fortresses around the world are visited by a mysterious caravan, guided by a solitary Dwarf who answers to the name St. Burialgears.

This lone caravan driver arrives at the trade depot each year bearing sacks full of the finest Dwarven ales and whiskey, kitten tallow biscuits, and ☼toys☼. He bestows these gifts upon his Dwarven brethren, and accepts nothing in return. Then, without a word, the caravan rolls off into the darkness, as the driver chuckles and wishes all a merry Dorfmas.

By far, the greatest and oldest tradition of Dorfmas takes place the night of Dorfmas eve. All the Dwarves, both the tall and the small short and shorter, gather at the magma pit and sing the traditional Dorfmas carols! The eve of Dorfmas is almost upon us, friends! So please, share with us your favorite Dorfmas traditions, sing your favorite Dorfmas carols, or join along with me to sing one of the most popular carols: The 12 Days of Dorfmas!

Oooooooooohhhhh...

DF General Discussion / Re: How many people you know play Dwarf Fortress?
« on: December 23, 2010, 05:21:52 am »
I tried to get my wife to play it, but she says farm-ville is better.
My best friend is a gamer, but he has zero patience...he would load the game and think "this looks like shit, I don't understand" and close it. He's addicted to WoW anyway.
I'm pretty sure none of my friends would have a clue as to what to do with an ASCII game. They are gamers, but they're pretty mainstream gamers, need graphics and such, otherwise "nah".
You make Pixel Jesus cry.

Erm... Morrowind. Yeah, I know you were originally looking for a roguelike and I gave you a fully 3-D game, but TESIII probably has more mods along the lines of what you're looking for than any other RPG. There are mods to buy all sorts of houses, strongholds, entire cities that can be built any way you want, guards and hero companions that can be hired, and all sorts of custom factions with advancement rewards. Most of them are very well-balanced and provide goals to strive for, like becoming a rich drug lord or becoming a vampire, kidnapping unsuspecting mortals, then attacking a major city from your dark citadel, followed by your army of enslaved battle thralls! That's barely skimming the surface.

Does it HAVE to be a roguelike? Lots of CRPGs have dozens of mods that allow you to buy houses, fortresses, etc.

There you go, changed the title.  I was too busy playing Minecraft to actually post in this thread.
Also, Minecraft is even awesomer with the right mods, haven't seen those mentioned here a lot.
Can't wait until the better ones get update to the latest version.
I haven't explored those much. Any suggestions?
I bought this game literally the day before it went beta. Hell yeah, free updates, all the way.

Then I made a large tower with circular stairs that led to a pleasant viewing platform with waterfalls installed around the edges. Hell yeah, getting into this whole 'thing'.

Then I tried to make a lava moat covered by glass around the outside. It was too close and the resulting fire burned down the entire island.

Just hell yeah.
Heh, yeah. I'm glad I got it during Alpha. So, if the updates don't come free for those who bought it with beta... how exactly does that work?

What was wrong with the grammar?
It's not wrong, but it's hard to understand from time to time.

We didn't mean to insult you Vadia, just remember quality over quantity. I certainly didn't mean anything by it. :)
