Personally, I think the possibilities that arise from combining moving fortress sections with dwarfputing are so great it's almost scary. Even with the constraints that the system is sure to have, megaprojects will never be the same. Personally I like the constantly shifting maze of insanity idea. And the ballistae on wheels. And the Hammer of Armok could finally be a reality.

According to Toady, after the army arc, site resources, caravan arc, and other adventurer mode improvements are done, he will begin work on fortress mode improvements. None of the fort mode improvements I've seen so far excite me quite as much as the bolded item above, though.

Moving fortress parts. Doesn't the very idea of it excite your inner-dwarf?

Anyway, I want to know: what do you plan on doing when this is finally implemented? Elevators? Rooms with lowering spiked ceilings? Dwarven MECHA?! No one has any idea how it will work when it's finally released, but feel free to speculate and post your devious plans here.

Like others have said, Dwarf Fortress's learning cliff is a fantastic defense against Trolls. Those not dorfy enough to handle DF are repelled very quickly, and trolls are quickly dispatched by our weapon traps and a legion of Axelords wielding ☼Adamantine Battleaxes☼. And all that's left is a bunch of elitists! :D

...wait that didn't come out right. :-\

I've seen the Minecraft forums, and I don't think I've ever seen a gaming forum more full of trolls and childish whiners elves. On the other hand, I've never seen a fan-base as fantastic as the DF community (sociopaths notwithstanding). Comparing the two is unimaginable.

I just read that entire thread. Did you ever make a version with the lyrics?

Oh man it would be so epic if we could make a lyrics version. Everyone who wanted could sing a verse and then get as many people as we can to record them singing the chorus and merge them all together. EDIT: And of course get everyone to yell BOATMURDERED!!

Don't be afraid to start with a small hollow and start making your superfortress only after you have gotten farming established.  On the other hand, if you are going to do that, don't wait too long or you will have to start worrying about defense.

Also, having a stockpile that accepts everything can be very useful, especially at first.
This. Progress is painfully slow if you try to do everything at once. Start small and get the essentials, and your efficiency will skyrocket. Also, build all the different kinds of workshops as soon as possible, lest every moody dwarf go on a murderous rampage because you didn't have a leatherworks...

well i can see his whole dwarf name just not his english name.and actually 2 seconds after i posted this i figured out an easier way. look at the dwarfs profile and roll your mouse wheel out to zoom out and it shows up at top.

And i'm begining to think my dwarves are all porn stars... "Carth Thayden II" Keycrews the Praised Naughtiness of Corridors, and Fikod Abirfikod- Glaze Romanceglaze...
*facepalm* I didn't even think of that... but yeah, there seems to be a lot of vaguely erotic Dwarf names floating around lately...

In legends mode, the names have the whole screen to use. The problem is that you have to abandon your fortress to open legends, then find your Dwarf in there... somehow. Amongst thousands of historical figures. I'm not sure if there's a fast way to look him up, but if you really want to, just backup your save folder, abandon, and open legends.

In the root of your DF folder:

raw/objects/language_DWARF.txt

It's a text file containing the english translations of all the Dwarf words. If his name goes off the screen, though... you can only translate what you see.

Without going overboard, I think Toady having a few shirts for sale from the Bay12 site would be a good idea. These images are iconic enough of Dwarf Fortress to go on t-shirts:





And I would buy that ☼T-shirt☼ any time. I mean, some people might rather get a t-shirt in exchange for their donation than a crayon drawing from the Adams' (though I'd like one of those too...)
