Press t to look at the trap and see if there's a corpse in it, if so it's jammed. They don't reset immediately either.

About how deep do they tend to be?Hmm you might just be really unlucky at finding them? My first one is around 30 levels down from the ground. Unless you've changed anything in the world generator files or are still playing version 40d?
I have dug to negative level 20, following various veins of rock to explore each level, and have not yet hit one.

Some caverns tend to be more like lots of tunnels than big open spaces so it is possible to mine down and miss some because you tunnel right through some rock formations and you dwarfs don't see the cavern itself. There should generally be three separate cavern systems, then the magma sea then other stuff. Quickest way is just to designate up/down stairs d->i, click your mouse where you want the stairs to go, hold the button down then just move down levels as normal, > for me, and you'll designate a massive stairwell to be dug.

For marksdwarves I think you need to do it slightly differently in order for them to train their ranged skills rather than more kicking and striking lessons. Rather than setting up a barracks from a bed/armour rack etc build archery targets and make that your barracks. I think you need to set each target as a barracks, I tried just using one and having the designation cover the whole room with the other targets but that didn't seem to work.My dwarves spend all their time stuck in wrestling demonstrations. Even though they all have swords and all have futures as swordsdwarves, they seem to cling to that novice or adequate kicker/striker/wrestling that they came in with. Is there any way to stop them learning useless skills? I don't mind the dodging, but a lot of these are just not going to help against the goblin horde.I don't think we have any control over what demonstrations the dwarves choose to do. Having said that, I don't mind too much because it seems to me they learn very well from demonstrations--it seems much faster than the "indiv combat drill" now.
Interestingly, I had a squad of marksdwarves (immigrants who came with some skill) before I had any crossbows ready. They occasionally did "crossbow demonstration" even without the crossbows.
