If I recall correctly, there are bugs with plaster and soap such that it would be better for the player not to use them in his fort.

Also, contaminants spread very easily and cannot easily be cleaned.
I just had a guy walking around in a cast so plaster bought from a caravan works fine.

I Vaguely remember hearing weird shit happens when you make it yourself, tho.

No idea about soap.
There's a bug with plaster where your bone doctor will get stuck drawing water from a well to make the plaster, but if you forbid all buckets apart from one that has water in it then it works.  So you're able to work round it assuming you have some buckets of water kicking about.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Face Palm moments you had

Most of my military were slaughtered in the Growling Assault of 1054, leaving armour and weapons scattered aboveground, including my artifact adamantine high boot.  No problem think I, the remaining military will equip it.  That doesn't happen for a season so I manually give it to my newly promoted militia commander.  He then proceeds to drop all his military gear and reequip everything else first as it's closer.

Then the rhesus macaques show up.

The previous boot's owners war dog seems to be leashed to where his owner died but doesn't manage to fend off the monkeys, and my remaining military seem to think it's a better idea to keep picking up new equipment than go where I tell them. :(

A dwarf being possessed doesn't mean you lose him, or did you miss something out from your post?  It means he will create an artifact of awesome if you have all the materials he requires (and the workshop he requires).

Check moods on the wiki to find out more - might be slightly spoilery.

Most of my peon dwarves are usually busy stockpiling materials near the different workshops and smelters for me, saves your armoursmith spending half his time running around looking for bars.

Although at the moment most of them are idle cowering inside as my military of 20 run around outside getting slaughtered by the 60 goblin, 10 troll and 30 assorted beasty siege that has turned up. My previous year's siege only had 10 goblins.  :'(

I'm starting to regret my traps are for pansies and elves stance...

Maybe I could cauterise the wound with magma.

DF Gameplay Questions / Infected wounds

One of my soldiers was wounded in a vicious fight with an, erm, rhesus macaque.  He got fixed up at the hospital and went on his way however he gained an infected wound, I was using a well for water but hadn't created any soap.

I've finally made some soap, he's still infected but he hasn't gone to clean himself despite being idle once or twice.  Will he eventualy do so before he keels over or do I need to arrange an accident with some wooden spikes to get him back to hospital?

Has anyone noticed your military getting the organise skill?  I 'think' my commander only started to get it after organising demonstrations but he may well have had it already...

Also when appointing your militia commanders and captains has anyone seen any usefully skilled dwarfs be at the top of the list, like anyone with the appraisal skill will be top choices for choosing your broker?  I would have assumed leader or teacher etc might be there, but I guess it still has to be added in (if there are any uniquely useful skills for a commander).  Nice thread though!

Sounds fine to me, my lowest z level is -27 at the moment.  You've probably just mined through one of the rock formations around the magma and never actually breached the magma sea, just tunnel around a bit until you find it.

My dwarves will not pick up any weapons I have manufactured since an early point in my fortress.  Also, I cannot choose these weapons from the "Specific weapon" list.  I have an arsenal dwarf.

Thanks in advance for any help.
Update the game, the newer versions have scrapped the arsenal dwarf as a position so your military will grab anything they can.  Sorry not sure what happens to your game if you already have an arsenal dwarf though, might need to start over.

Silly Dworf: select any dwarf with v, press p for professions, l for labour and highlight mining and press enter to enable that dwarf to mine, this works for any profession.  You'll just need to have a free pick in order for him to do anything.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Extinct Civilisations
« on: July 13, 2010, 08:23:08 am »
Is there anyway to find out if my new genned world has other civilisations left in it?  I think in fortress mode you only see the other civs once you come into contact with them, I did have a poke about in legends mode but it wasn't terribly clear if the civs were still around or all their members has been killed off.

I do appear to have a cat demon as leader of a goblin civilisation, who've also made a sculpture out of half a dozen elf corpses in the past.....are goblins really that bad?

Admittedly, the interface for making that switch is pretty painful. And it'd be nice if they'd more often go for the *steel breastplate*s, minty fresh from the forge, instead of the <copper mail>, shucked off a dead goblin.
Pretty sure that's been fixed now, I bought some bronze pieces from a merchant but I 'think' they are all stockpiled now my migrant grandmaster armourer has started cranking out steel armour and the arsenal dwarf has assigned it all correctly.  I did then notice there are no other civilisations other than dwarves so there's not that much of a need for it.....I've just left my central stairwell that descends through the earth open to all the caverns to keep my military busy.  Needed to expand my meat processing to take care of the crundle and elkbird hordes though :(

Does anyone know whether the "[creature] has stolen a [whatever]" comes up when the thief picks up the item, or when/if it leaves the map?
A successful theft of item or child will be announced once the thief leaves the map.

Sweet, didn't realise that.

If you put a hatch cover over the pit the dwarves won't get frightened by anything already in the pit since they can't see it.  I just use a 1x1 pit hole to make that work, depends how you manage your pitting I guess.
