General Discussion / "SCLA Honor Society"... Is this a scam?
« on: January 02, 2017, 01:22:17 pm »
Hey, guys. I received an E-mail a few days ago to my college E-mail address from something called The Society for Collegiate Leadership & Achievement (SCLA). The letter read that they had nominated me for membership in their organization, presumably because of outstanding academic achievement or something.

The only problem with that is that my GPA is only 2.5. Over a full point below qualifying for the honor roll at my own college.

Skeptical, I did a little searching on Google. It seems a few other people have gotten this kind of pitch too, and were calling it a scam. SCLA charges a $95 membership fee, for one thing, which was apparently another red flag.

I wasn't entirely sure whether this was a total scam or actually legit, though, so I thought I may as well ask around. Has anyone else gotten these sorts of pitches before? I almost got taken in by this one until I remembered that my GPA was well below average and the only time I got honors was with my GED several years back.

General Discussion / Code Geass season 3 confirmed!
« on: November 29, 2016, 10:46:23 pm »
Does anyone remember the blockbuster hit anime series, "Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion", that debuted back in 2006? Well, after years of being on hiatus following the end of Season 2, apparently it's officially getting a third season. Not a spinoff movie or series, but an actual continuation of the mothership canon title, starring Lelouch himself.

This was announced 2 days ago on November 27th. I only just now saw this.

Holy. Shit.

WARNING - SPOILERS FOR CODE GEASS' PREVIOUS SEASONS IN THE LINK BELOW

I just had my Great-level Hunter (who is also a suspected Vampire due to having way too many skills) fight a very tense battle with a sneaky Werelizard that had just wandered onto the map, using her Great-level Dodging skills to avoid its deadly attacks while she pounded it with steel bolts. She finally got one through its heart and severed a major artery, killing the beast, but not before it managed to finally land one hit:  A bite on her upper leg, tearing the fat.

Assuming that the were-curse was transmitted... how screwed am I? I have given this dwarf a profession name of !!INFECTED!! so I never forget her, and am seriously considering building a containment pit to lock her in. Will she turn hostile and start killing my dwarves if she turns into a werebeast? Will it count as a crime in the Justice system if any witnesses see her turn/turned?

One of my Herbalists, Urist Zanegusir ("Relicglacier") went out to pick plants, because I realized in this current version, plant gathering is far more fun and productive than farming. She came back from a trip just now walking as if she was carrying raw stone. I opened the unit viewer and cursored over her to find this:

Yes. That herbalist is carrying 169 plant items. ALL AT ONCE.

And she's not even that strong. Just "agile and slow to tire".

Wow.

Has this happened to anyone else? xD

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Septerra - Rise of the Junkers (On hiatus)
« on: October 19, 2016, 04:12:39 pm »
Septerra, the clockwork sky-world of seven layers of floating continental "Shells", is sinking into turmoil. Rival nations engage in skirmishes and vicious arms races for resources and prestige, sky pirates take advantage of the chaos to harass inter-shell trade, and inhuman creatures are awakened in deadly packs in the wake of mobilizing armies and frightened civilians.

But for Shell 2, the infamous "Junkland" of scrap and salvage, it's a good time to be alive.

There's money to be had, here. You know it, and everyone else knows it, too. Shell 2, with all its underpopulated deserts, scrubland, and foreboding mountain ranges, has always been a popular place for other Shells to dump their unwanted garbage, conduct high-yield weapons tests, and more. Fortunately for the Junkers, the determined and creative inhabitants of Shell 2, the increased amounts of junk and surplus dumped on their continents greatly fuels their unique way of life.

In this game, you play as a Junker, part of a group of scavengers, inventors, and scrap recyclers who make their living by creating usable goods from things other, richer nations either have no use for, or simply don't want anymore. You're used to digging through scrap heaps to fashion usable items, and so is every other Junker on the Shell. Entire communities are built using welded storage containers for housing and chopped-up rubber tires for bedding. You are one of the groups of Junkers with the necessary skills to take on more exciting jobs -- like creating your own weapons, armor, and equipment from salvaged scrap and surplus found in the field. Whatever you do with that, and with your skills, is up to you; it's a fine time to rise as an independent Junker!

I'm editing a map called Destiny Battle, a once-popular RPG mod/game for Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne. Players pick one Hero (character) and cooperate with other players to defend the city of Vern from the armies of the evil wizard Adomach.

I came into editing this at a point where it was still woefully unfinished, however, so there aren't nearly as many Level 2 Artifact-class items, or even Level 2 Epic items as there should be. The Level 1 items list is all done already. What I need are cool ideas for artifacts or other powerful items to flesh things out, and perhaps get a head start on Level 3 items while I'm at it (which was never done to begin with).

Examples of some existing items here:

I can provide more examples as needed, or answer any questions you may have.

I'm planning a fanfiction story involving a network of ancient catacombs spread out well over 20 stories deep underneath a ruined castle. The site is located in the middle of a large forest, with a large canyon (complete with water at the bottom) also about 20 stories deep running around it on two sides and partially on a third. I'm assuming the rock type to be mostly sedimentary, though metamorphic might be nice.

Here's the thing, though. I want to avoid just saying 'rock' over and over and actually do something with the type of said rock that the catacombs are hewn out of. Is anyone here knowledgeable about such things? What would be the ideal type(s) of rock you could carve rooms and corridors out of while maintaining solid structural integrity? What rock types could potentially cause you trouble or wear down significantly with age, pressure, and/or erosion? This castle and the catacombs are over 1000 years old, by the way.

Roll To Dodge / The Veil of Memories [Remake] (dead)
« on: March 22, 2016, 04:23:51 pm »
After doing a lot of thinking, I've decided to give one of my old attempts at forum games another shot. I believe I now have a much better grasp of how to handle all these different strings of things happening at once in a progressive storyline, so I shouldn't be as easily overwhelmed as I was before.

And so, without further ado, I give you the reboot! Enjoy!
~ Xvareon

You are a citizen/visitor in Harker's Ford, a quaint but rapidly-growing village of roughly 700 people that lies astride the river Tearsfall and the new land trade route connecting... actually, you can't remember the name of the nation. You can't remember much of anything, really. And from what it looks like, you aren't the only one. A strange pall of amnesia seems to be affecting the town, causing many who live there to forget about the outside world, and those who visit to lose memory of why they stopped there in the first place, or where they were going afterwards.

Life at the Ford is relatively good so far, but you can... sense... that something is wrong. The disappearances are getting more frequent. Stranger and stranger folk have been entering town, and once you swear that you saw... something... unnatural beneath one of their hoods. A thick, almost palpable blue fog is beginning to cover the town and the land surrounding it, strangely seeming to avoid some buildings or locations where people frequent. Everyone else in the town seems blissfully unaware of what is going on, but you are one of the few who has managed to hold on to enough of their sanity to act, and get to the bottom of this mystery before it is too late.

The time has come to pull back the veil.

Quote from: RTD Standard 1.0 ruleset
Simply post an action and I will roll for it, based on a scale of 1-6 in terms of success.
[1]: Critical failure. Your efforts only worsened your situation. Attempting to shoot at a target only to have the shot ricochet and strike an ally falls under this category.
[2]: Failure. You failed to achieve whatever action you attempted, though you may not have made things worse in the process.
[3]: Meager success. You may have progressed a little or saw something new, but usually nothing close to what you were hoping.
[4]: Success. You achieved your goal more or less in line with average expectations.
[5]: Epic success. You went above and beyond achieving your goal, and usually got very lucky, as well.
[6]: Overshot. You achieved your goal, but your efforts were so much that collateral damage or the creation of additional problems is likely; i.e, "You leap to attack the creature on the cliff ... sending you both flying off the edge!"

If at any time something threatens a player (i.e. being attacked), that player may make a roll to avoid the threat. Damage incurred or inflicted is also calculated by dice, though the rolls are reversed (lower rolls = higher damage). Certain abilities, items, and effects can influence the roll positively or negatively.

When you attack an enemy, you make an Attack roll to determine accuracy; the higher this roll, the better. If your attack lands, then the enemy makes a roll to determine how much damage it takes; the lower this roll, the more damage is taken. So having + bonuses to your damage rolls means that the enemy takes a penalty when they roll for damage; i.e, a +1 to damage from a weapon results in a -1 penalty on damage rolls for your target. Having + bonuses or - penalties to damage resistance affects a creature or object's rolls accordingly.
Quote from: RTD Advanced Rulings
For each action, any number of rolls may be made, as determined by the GM.
Primary causes for multiple rolls include, but are not limited to:
  • Actions explicitly composed of multiple actions
  • Actions that imply other actions that are not declared free
For every dodge roll, any number of additional rolls may be made, as determined by the circumstances, and any skills or special effects applied to the player.

If you post two turns worth of actions, they will be done in order:  The first happens on that given turn, and the second action will be carried out the following turn (assuming it still can be, or nothing changes to make it impossible). Players can use this to post directives for their character to follow automatically if they cannot be present to post an action for their next turn.
Quote from: RTD Extended 1.3 Rules
Each successive dodge roll during a turn, unless it is a dodge against the same object or character, will get a cumulative -1 penalty.

If you are Stunned, Dazed, or otherwise receive a temporary penalty to overall or individual rolls, this penalty lasts until your next action is resolved, and not through the whole turn.
If you receive a long-term effect that has the potential to alter itself, you get an Effect Resistance roll immediately after your action is resolved to determine the spread and consequences of the effect.
If you are Unconscious, whatever penalty you receive will be under Failguard -- it cannot reduce your roll score below 2, unless stated otherwise.
If you receive a mortal wound but are not killed outright, you need to pass a roll to dodge Death at the end of every turn. Only bad rolls here will provide penalties to survival rolls.

You can spend your turn to help another player achieve his goal. If your roll is higher, it is taken as the success roll for the action.
You can also spend your turn to botch another player's action. If your roll is higher, its opposite is taken as the success roll for the action.
In both cases, individual player rolls determine what happens to the players in the course of the action.

Playerlist (6/6): (EDIT:  These slots are not first-come-first-serve. I will choose 6 characters that I like from those who post here to start the game with, any others will be waitlisted. This does mean you aren't necessarily out of luck if you weren't one of the first 6 people to post, though!)

Vi (Kevak), female Kitsune visitor
Rachael Mori (DarkArtemisFowl), female Human visitor

Just post your preferred character here, like so:
Name:
Race:
Gender:
Appearance: (because it's kinda boring for me if I don't have particular character traits to include in my posts, leading me to assume a lot.)
Status: (Resident of/Visitor to Harker's Ford)
Occupation: (Are you a traveling trader, or scholar? Fisherman? Local militiaman? Tavern waitress? Or simply unemployed? Take your pick.)
Starting position: (Let me know if you've got a specific part of town or surrounding area you'd like to start the game in, and I'll do my best to work you in. If you'd rather not choose, I'll just roll a d6 and let that decide your positioning.)
Primary power/ability: (Pick 1 (I will roll for this))

Well, I guess that about covers it! Have fun, everyone! If you have any questions, please, don't hesitate to ask, either here or via PM.

P.S: The rules and style of this game are inspired greatly by Sean Mirrsen's 'Multiworld Madness' series of games, Book 1 in particular. You should definitely read that too if you get the chance; it's one of the best -- if not THE best -- forum games on all of Bay 12 Forums.

The title says it all. I'm thinking of creating an original character for an XCOM 2 campaign that is from Nigeria, but I haven't the slightest clue where to begin with the background for someone like that, what with me being American through-and-through and never having visited another country. I know that Nigeria is referred to as the "Giant of Africa" owing to its large population and economy, that it does indeed have a good-sized standing army, was the first to find an effective way to combat the Ebola virus outbreak in 2002, etc, etc... but that's just common knowledge. I'm looking for things like local traditions, popular phrases used in everyday conversation, and some example words in an African dialect that a female Nigerian soldier might use regularly (I'm being general about this because there are supposed to be over 500 languages spoken in Nigeria, and I couldn't possibly list them all; I just want some variety aside from English, which is their official language). Other good information involving the most commonly used standard issue weapons for Nigerian infantrymen, their policy about allowing females to serve in the army, and what kind of camouflage pattern they typically use for their gear would also help me out a lot.

I'm very open to questions on this, 'cause really, I barely know where to start. I'm hoping any input here can help me get some more ideas about where to go to find better information. I'd have done more research before making this topic, but it's late and I'm a bit tired.

Some details, though:  XCOM 2 is a game that takes place in the year 2035, 20 years after alien forces from outer space invaded with a fleet of ships and soldiers and conquered Earth, taking apart all of the planet's major governments and installing a unilateral military and government power called the "ADVENT Administration" to rule it for them. As a result, Nigeria pretty much doesn't exist anymore, as the countries have simply been replaced by regional provinces stretching over wide swathes of land. I realize that kinda makes current information about Nigeria more or less moot, but a lot of people on Earth still remember how things were before the invasion, and you can still see plenty of leftover weapons, old trucks, and 100-gallon propane tanks left over to gather dust.

I'd really appreciate it if anyone here could help me with figuring this out. Thanks! I've left some character details below.

Name:  Tamala Baloyi (the game random-picked that name for me, and I liked it, but I'm still open to suggestions.)
Age:  27 (b. 2008)
Class:  Specialist (I really like the flying Gremlin drones they use, and it gives me plenty of fun ideas involving it following them around so much her fellow operatives treat it like it's her pet.)
Rank:  Sergeant
Here are pictures of her for reference.

EDIT:  Fixed the broken picture link, and reported this post to the moderators for moving to Creative Projects on advice from Trapezohedron. Thanks!

Hi! I wasn't really sure where to put this thread exactly, so I hope I'm doing this right.

Me and some friends are looking for a dungeon master to run a game of Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition for us. There are at least 3 of us, 4 if we are lucky. I myself am an amateur who has never played tabletop D&D before, but I know most of the rules by heart from having played Neverwinter Nights and other D&D-related titles, and I'm reading the 5e manual to learn about things like the Advantage/Disadvantage system. My other friends have played the game, though, and have some good experience.

Our likely classes to play as include:  Druid, Warlock, and Fighter. Alignments range from Lawful Neutral (Human Druid) to Chaotic Neutral (Dark Elf Warlock) to Neutral Good (Fighter).

We do have our own campaign already, but if we meet a DM who has a better idea for an adventure, we'd love to hear it!

I'm not too hopeful to find an actual DM to do a game for a few fairly-new players here on the Bay 12 forums, though, so I was actually making this post more to ask if anyone knew of and could link any good D&D 5e websites to look at, and post on to attract a potential dungeon master. If you require more information about my group or our campaign, please ask. I appreciate any help you can give!

All of the new changes to Fortress life are pretty impressive in and of themselves -- I'm having a ball playing around with the taverns and temples, and I can't wait to get a library set up to make sure my Dwarves stay literate. The modern written word is what separates us from scratch-on-the-walls goblins and cave-men, after all!

But what really impressed me is what happened just now. A human, crossbow in hand, showed up at my humble fort-under-construction, and actually petitioned me to let him join my fort as a member of the community.

I was dumbstruck. I know Toady said this would happen in his release notes, but DAMN. I now have a full-blooded 'umie archer mercenary to fill out my fledgling military! I can only assume that he will also do other tasks around the fort, if I but ask him to. This is amazing! Now we can actually have cosmopolitan fortresses with joint-race militaries! Thank you, O Toady One the Great!

(Of course, I have no idea if I'll actually have to pay this chap coins or something at some point to keep him around. He didn't ask for any when he petitioned me to let him join, though.)

General Discussion / Help us find a good multiplayer turn-based game!
« on: November 07, 2015, 11:27:43 am »
A friend of mine and I are looking for some kind of multiplayer game we can both play together on Windows, but we're coming up dry because of some complicating factors:

1) I have HughesNet satellite internet, which is laggy and has long delay times when playing a game, so I can't really do anything too fast, like shooters or RTS games (strategy games on the Spring engine like Zero-K seem to be an exception, for some reason; I can run them just fine. Or I could, until a weird error started freezing my game and kicking me out after 6 minutes each time).
2) My friend only has a 2.30ghz dual-core processor and about 3 gigs of RAM. Kinda weak when it comes to running any big games these days. By comparison, I have a 2.00ghz quad-core processor and 5 gigs of RAM.

So if anyone can think of any good turn-based game, or one that doesn't require really high reflexes and a fast broadband internet on my part (shooter games are right out), we would greatly appreciate any suggestions! Oh, and it should be immediately accessible, too; as in, readily downloadable from the internet, or playable as a flash game. Though if it's good enough, we might consider ordering it online and waiting for delivery if we like what we see.

(We've already tried Battle for Wesnoth, by the way. It didn't really work for me; not exciting enough.)

Forum Games and Roleplaying / Rumor Mill (0/4; OPEN!)
« on: September 14, 2015, 10:12:50 pm »
Ever wonder how much a piece of juicy information can get distorted from one person to another, changing with each interpretation, mutating and feeding from the fear, anger and spite of speculation until it's nothing but a vicious monster beyond any living being's control?

That, children, is a rumor.

But when employed in a closed environment, sometimes these vicious creatures can be contained -- and are actually quite fun to keep around, somewhat like that fluffy wambler you found out in the forest on a hunting trip that insisted on coming back with you, which lasted right up until it tried to kick a forgotten beast's legs/villi/nameless means of locomotion like a spazzed-out chihuahua.

But maybe that fluffy wambler actually killed the beast. Maybe it was enshrined in glory for its valiant deeds and became the next ruler of Dwarven civilization, sitting atop a throne of toilet paper made of goblin skins and studded with diamonds. But who's to know? Somewhere along the line, the truth got out of our hands, and went careening off in pieces down a bottomless pit. All we have left is our fragile, fertile imaginations as we huddle in our own dark corner of remaining sanity, left to feed the recognizable mass of an idea until it grows, grows, grows beyond mortal ken...

... Hm. Do you remember what we were talking about?
Quote from: Rules
  • First, I'm going to need a minimum of 4 players. Any more are welcome, though!
  • All players will be arranged in a line, based on who is selected to go first.
  • I will use a 6-sided die to randomly select who will go first. That person will then start a rumor by creating any combination of words that can form a full sentence, and then 'whispering' that both to the next person in line, and also to the GM (me) via the private message system (PM) here on Bay 12.
  • The person who was PM'ed will then 'distort the truth' by adding, taking away, or blowing certain things in that sentence out of proportion. They then take their new sentence and pass it on to the next person, who gives it to the next, and so on.
  • This will continue until the line reaches the person directly before whoever the line started with. Once that person PM's me (and me alone) their sentence, I will post all of them together here in this thread, update-style, so we can all see the monster we've created...
NOTE:  Any combination of words is OK, but please try to avoid anything too blatantly trollish. It's just common sense.

Quote from: Example
  • X really likes going to Pizza Hut.
  • X likes pizza with pepperoni and green peppers.
  • X likes pizza with RED-hot korean peppers.
  • X's favorite pizza is the Demilitarized Zone!
Playerlist: 5
Tomasque
DigitalDemon
Kashyyk
Eritzap
tney
(Any additional players will be accepted; 4 is just the minimum I need. I'll start this once I feel I've got as many as I'm going to get in a reasonable period of time.)

A friend of mine that I know mostly from online is driving over in about 2-3 days to stay at my place for 1 week or so. The problem is, last time I had this specific friend over as company, I wasn't really able to come up with much to do besides hang around and build houses in Minecraft, and discuss possible ideas for fanfiction and the like. He said he hopes that "we'll be able to do more than video games together this time", and I agree. (I know I make it sound like that's all we did, but no; just a large chunk of it. It's a mainstay for both of us.)

I've already lined up a few things like going out to play mini-golf (which we both love), and co-op writing a comic sketch where each of us makes one scene and then passes it to the other. But time is FLYING by, and I'm starting to get anxious, 'cause I'm just not used to having company over for extended periods of time and having to come up with things to do that aren't part of my normal routine. (Seriously, I've had, like... only 3 major guests over in the last 2-3 years. They've all gone pretty well, but... yeah. I can be a recluse.)

So, I'm making this thread to ask:  Anyone have any ideas for fun and engaging activities to try that you wouldn't mind sharing with someone who doesn't get out much? xD  I'm open to most suggestions at this point. Sometimes something unrelated can make me think of a good one. Anyway, in case it's important for you to know, we have 2 cars, 2 computers, a high-definition TV, we're only 7 minutes drive from town, we have access to mini-golf, go-carts, bowling, pool, arcades, etc. in the area (within about an hour's drive, generally), and a very good movie theater. I've got 1 or 2 good people I could easily bring with on outings, as well.

If there's anything else you need to know, just ask. Thanks!
