I propose designing a sound emitter device that can produce loud and disruptive noises to scare off these flying creatures if they start getting too curious. We know they use sounds to communicate based on all that clacking and clicking. For now, proof of concept would be a pylon-like device (maybe even attached to one of the powered light poles) that can be activated remotely. I just want to see if this will work, to be able to scare them off especially if none of us are physically present. This is the kind of thing we can tweak to affect different kinds of creatures, too, so we'll have plenty of use for it.
TL;DR:  Sound emitters to scare animals and send verbal warnings/notices to intelligent beings (like us).

We may be able to adapt that system with different sound ranges later to attempt communication with the creatures, too, but I'll leave that stuff up to the Social experts. Right now I just want them away. Watching is fine, but from a distance.

I figure "perimeter detection" can be as simple as just sitting up light posts over ground we scout in our immediate area, and to mark any points of interest (like a good spot to get water by the river) or any animal trails, so on. If possible, I'd want to color code these so any danger spots found (sinkholes, etc.) are marked red. The spotlights and such can wait. Prioritize lights and markers for now, those shouldn't take much of the solar paneling, like a little inches-wide piece per post. We can worry about an extensive camera and monitoring network after we know what we're dealing with.

Oh, and as for material for said posts, try and see if there's any decent wood around for that too. We'll likely start with metal or PVC or whatever it is we're working with with our limited resources, but we've definitely gotta find a more efficient way.

Okay, amending my suggestion to Y-16 because there's even more open ground for (relatively) clear sight lines, yet is still reasonably close to the woods and the river.

With "setting up a perimeter", do you mean to add a fence or something?
No. I just mean to map the immediate vicinity, the ground, check for activity, and establish where the approach points to our camp are. Fences would be a terrific undertaking at this point given our lack of materials. I'd first like to see if we can assemble some basic cameras or motion sensors to monitor our campsite.

To that end, though, I do have some more specific things to do. If we have time, I want to assemble a spotlight, and hook it to our main hab's power. Something like the lights I'm pretty sure our Quad would have, only bigger. If possible, also hook it to remote control. The spotlight will give us security at night by giving us a way to see approaching threats at range, and also just generally supporting whoever's on patrol. As we progress, I'd want solar-powered lamps based on that detachable panel we have that can store power during the day and release it at night, which would keep light on any assets outside and monitor paths.

This is exactly what I'd hoped to find—a river delta with mountains on side and water on the other three. I could hardly imagine a better spot. Y-15 is my preference, there's plenty of clearing while also being reasonably close to woodland. Having more clearings around means we'll more easily spot any potential threats coming our way, and at Y-15, there's open water and clearings in all directions but one directly adjacent. That's perfect.

My first priority with the drone would simply be to preliminarily map out accessibility of the surrounding area. Where is the reasonably flat ground, potential trails that'd make good access into the woodland, anything that looks like a wildlife trail leading to and from the water source, all that. It'd help to know where we can drive the Quad without it getting stuck. Lost time sucks.

Immediately after landing, my priorities are a.) check the water for any lifeforms like fish; and b.) immediately set up a perimeter around our soon-to-be main hab module. Observe any local wildlife, flora or fauna or otherwise. Look around but only within eyesight. The drone takes care of the big picture, I want to look closer. Start taking notes of even small insects and tree foragers, if they exist.

There are some items I want to sell, but have markings on them I cannot read due to being in a foreign language. There's one in particular I'll include an image for below. If I come up with any others, I may update this with more images. Thanks!

Hint:  This one was written on the bottom of a Chinese porcelain vase with gold inlay. It's a stamp, not a sticker.

Okay, there, I think I fixed my settings for notifications now. I just could've sworn I already had.

I can work with that compromise, yes. A clearing big enough to land our ship reasonably close to water is ideal. Water doesn't just mean life and crop growth, it means hydrogen and, potentially, deuterium. Not to mention what minerals and salts might get carried out from the highlands and left as sediment layers. Rivers are best. We know running water reduces the chance of pathogens. We don't know what alien algae or bugs might be growing in a lake.

Ok, what the frick, seriously, I don't know how I missed all of these updates. I literally have this thread on Notify and it didn't give me a single poke. Not one. If I don't respond, someone please PM me and hopefully that'll give me an E-mail notification. Thanks.

I propose bolding and/or underlining text whenever we update the votebox so we know what the update(s) are at a glance. Like so:

We apparently have a flying drone that can scout for us, so the need for a satellite is not really that pressing. I understand the desire not to start so far behind, but we're not starting with 21st century tech, this is like the 28th century, damn if we can't still figure that out, and double damn if I plan on wasting my time waiting for space again when there's so much in-depth exploration of the planet to do. I mean, really, we can do plenty with a doppler radar once we get the stuff for that, and until then, we should learn for ourselves how to survive so we can set an example for others to follow after us. We've gotta stop thinking like machines and start thinking like humans. Let's get groundside, by water, with (hopefully) trees and a stable biosphere, and figure the rest out then.

38
I strongly advise against this. How are we going to power the thing? The main power supply of our ship was nuclear, right? You don't just split a nuclear reactor into halves like slicing a fruit. Do we have solar panels for that satellite? We'd have to. In any case, we could really use those panels groundside to get us started, because we're going to need some way to remotely power any installation away from the main hab.

I'd be fine with it. We can chalk the discrepancies up to corrupted databanks from hard cosmic radiation leading to conflicting instructions on who to wake up and when, or something.

I'm thinking of this as an extremely fragile operation, lightyears from home, where we have one and only one chance to get it right. In any survival situation, you want shelter first, then water, then food. Shelter in this case means safe ground. Water's a convenient way to get that along with its own sake.

Try to find a delta, a large-ish island where sizable rivers/streams run around, or a decent area to land the ship that's got water on (preferably) three sides, at least. That's for our protection as well as for resources and support.

I noticed something a bit weird about this map. Is Delta Pavonis C turning in the opposite direction from Earth? If this were Earth, moisture would get trapped on the west end of mountains and leave the regions eastward dry. Yet here, it's all flipped. You have mountains with deserts and arid land on the west end.

That said, I'd like to express support for I-15 as a start, but I don't think we should just go down willy-nilly. We'd be touching down in a colder clime, looks like, with ice upriver from what looks like an inland sea. What I really want to know is if there's any rivers around. Rivers make for perfect natural barriers and sources of clean running water, and potential hydroelectric power.

(Hey, people still don't really get that Dionysus was a messed-up god with even more messed-up followers, either, even though on the surface he's basically a hippie.)

Fin's meddling does not go unnoticed. Or unappreciated. Iteration and symbiosis are welcome... but outright nullification is quite another thing. Ix endeavors to mold the symbiotic nature of the Ico tree even further. Let some who contact its glory carry not just its blessing, but its seed, as it becomes one with them. Those who properly band together in a collective gestalt, a tribe not necessarily dedicated to the Ico but using it (and it using them) to fulfill their purpose of living life, creating, and repeating the cycle again and again, for that is Life.

On the other hand, for things to remain in balance... Ix also creates a dangerous dark side to the Ico's symbiosis. For those who go wrong, who completely lose their identity to it, they may become a Myriad -- many minds (and even bodies) merged into one being, with no one mind able to rise above and enforce its identity upon the whole corpus. They stalk the land for succor, devouring dreams, memories and other minds in a starving-mad attempt to regain their lost identity. It should be the duty of the Symbiotes who kept their individuality to track them down, and force them to embrace that which a Myriad inevitably becomes:  a new Ico tree.
